Sugar is bad. But, there is a food that is way worse than sugar.
Certain factors can shorten your lifespan—these factors include:
• Severe obesity
• Heavy smoking
• Vegetable oils
• Physical inactivity
• Heavy drinking
• Moderate smoking
• Excess sugar
• Processed meat
• Air pollution
• Red meat
• Sodium
Vegetable oils are one of the most dangerous foods you could include in your diet—even worse than sugar.
Vegetable oil isn’t really oil from vegetables. It’s mostly made from seeds, legumes, and grains.
Key points on vegetable oils:
1. Over 30% of our calories come from vegetable oil
2. They contain highly inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids
3. Restaurants typically use a lot of vegetable oil
4. One study on unsaturated fats (vegetable oil) found that there was an increased death rate of all causes by 62% when compared to saturated fats
5. Only severe obesity and heavy smoking are more dangerous than vegetable oils
6. One study showed an 86% increase in heart attacks, and after seven years, the number of strokes and heart attacks increased by seven times
7. One study showed an increased risk of cancer by 82%
8. Deep-fried foods are some of the worst because the oil is often reheated
Consider replacing your vegetable oils with olive oil, butter, ghee, coconut oil, tallow, or lard.

Wow. This actually connects A LOT of dots for me personally. As someone who has made recent efforts to eat healthier, this explains why I still feel awful while eating certain foods cooked a certain way. Raw foods really are the key to great health.
@north undertaker Any, as long as it’s organic/pasture raised, grass fed etc.. it matters that the meat comes from a healthy animal raised natural to it’s lifestyle and diet. I’ve ate raw beef, lamb, fish, pork, poultry: ie chicken & turkey, as well as raw heart and liver.
I can feel the difference in the nutritional content is much, much higher eating raw meat relative to cooked meat. After I got used to it, I think it tastes much better and I don’t season it at all. Raw meat is also 55% water, so it’s hydrating as well. Raw eggs are a good starting point if you’re interested in incorporating some raw animal foods.
@Graced o, I agree with all, I spent long time in rural Alaska, just nobody can escape parasites this way, and THIS is not about immune system ….and after all, I even cook salad 🙂
@north undertaker The guy who invented the raw primal diet, Aajonus Vonderplanitz had said that parasites and bacteria aren’t to be feared and that they can be beneficial in that they serve specific purposes in the human body. I don’t hold an absolute opinion on the matter, but I figure if every other carnivorous animal eats their meat raw there’s no reason we can’t either.
@Eric Swope Better made into Ghee (clarified butter)
@Lễ Nguyễn Ngọc No one is the only source one should use for their advice. True, most Chiropractors (such as Dr. Berg) have far more studies in nutrition than MD’s. People should still do their own research. Most vegetable oils are , most sources agree , rancid on the shelf because of the heat and other toxic methods of processing. That study you cite sounds really horrible. One should always consider the source of a study. Third party, to start with, imo Well being
I’m learning all the time. I had been up until recently, been buying premium olives and I wrongly assumed they were in olive oil. I noticed they were in sunflower oil. Now I know why I was getting pain in my joints again which I hadn’t had since starting keto about 4 years ago. Thank you Dr Berg for all your videos.
It’s even worse than you think. Studies of commercial olive oil showed that most are blended with soy oil. Do some digging and you’ll find only a couple of brands that aren’t adulterated. I have settled on Enzo’s Table as one of them, I usually have to order it online.
First of all, why the hell should olives be in oil? Olives need to be in brine cause they need to be fermented. Whats the problem in the states? Why do you need to do everything different and obviously wrong? 😂
@Easy Go Because the industrial era was founded in the U.S.A. and we just can’t stop our addiction to more more more, faster faster faster, sweeter sweeter sweeter! The U.S. is doomed and I’ve been thinking about emigrating to Portugal 🙂 Meanwhile I wish more European producers would get on American Amazon.
@Easy Go There are lots of problems here 😅
Olive oil, is that good? I changed from butter to olive oil to be more healthy. It feels to me at this point that the best food to eat is nothing, people are even talking about salicylates in vegetables, so they say don’t eat vegetables, but also pasta and red meat is bad for you, and they say fasting is great. Then OK, I guess eating NOTHING is the best way?
Thanks. We’re mostly using Ghee in our house these days. But mustard oil is so tasty in the right recipe, so that’s used – we make it ourselves from my wife’s farm. Hard part will be avoiding seed oil in restaurants like you said.
Hey Karl…..nice surprise…in here. Love ur contents.
Ghee
@Ann Rhodes OK thank you! I will stick to Mustard Greens for now, which I love!
@Graced I’ve yet to have a restaurant steak taste as good as the ones I grill in my own backyard. 😋
I had some potato crisps as a “treat” and the way I felt after eating them was no treat! Yup, that oil is a killer! But you don’t realize just how sick it’s making you until you haven’t had it in a while. Then, when you eat it again… It easier to choose healthy when feeling ill is the consequence of poor food choices!
I concur with you Joy, I used to treat myself with keto-forbidden things like cake or sugar, then I realised it was crazy to “treat” one’s self with poison.
Joy, you are so right but I am a slow learner. I have one whole shelf of different chips. I love crunchy snacks. I guess I need to find truly healthy, crunchy alternatives.
@Believer Deep fried pork skin. I use a microwave to do this.

@Nxbxxha_17
It’s all how it’s processed. Also, when that kind of oil is heated up, it changes the molecules in the oil. There’s lots of videos about this. Or just Google it.
Also, people can’t understand why orange juice is bad because it’s all from oranges, right ? But it’s pasteurized which means they boil everything good out of it. And there’s no fiber left. Just more sugar than a candy bar. 😳
Boiling our food just kills it. Try boiling up some garden seeds and then plant them and see if you grow anything. Nope. It’s dead.
@Cj Howard Ohh alright, thank you so much for the information! Stay Bless
Thanks Dr Berg’s freind
THANK YOU!!!! 🥰
I stopped vegetable oil a long time ago. I am heavy handed with oil therefore I cook only with olive oil ❤️
I asked one of the employees at a local fast food place (one of the best) about what oil they use in their deep fryer, and they said canola oil, and I asked how often they changed out the oil, and they said once a week.
Even Gus Freng swapped out the oil more frequently than that
Either the oil utility users are oblivious to oil rancidity causes and impact on health, or just indifferently using a more profitable cooking oil. Until the gmen officially ban its use, those oils will remain in the marketplace.
wow
I’m so glad I’m not a fast food eater because this information would make me stop immediately.
@Mark Victor Well, he was very much into quality product.
My old boss used to have a colour chart for his vegetable oil he would keep reusing it until it turned very dark brown, many restaurants take shortcuts even using a microwave to half cook food people are just unaware of what they’re paying for, as for vegetable oil I was always told as a kid to avoid it as it would give you bad acne, thanks for the informative heads up 👍
Excellent advice Doc. For a number of years we do not have any vegetable oils in our house. We live on the Mediterranean coast so best quality locally produced olive oil is the only one we use for cooking, dips and salads. Unfortunately it’s difficult to avoid in some restaurants particularly in cities, where we are the local restaurants use only local products including the fish, meat, eggs, etc. But we are lucky and I understand it can be difficult for many people to avoid the bad ingredients. Best solution, don’t eat out too often.
@Stephen Rogers ….I think Avocado oil can handle high heat, like coconut oil. It won’t turn into free artery clogging radicals like all those other seed oils. That’s my guess on that.
How to recognize good olive oil in the market?🌿
@Love Helping ….Thanks for the advice. Some of this I can relate to and some I’m unfamiliar with. The quality of my food has gone way up. Organic, green vegetables, no starchy stuff, white pasta, white bread, rice are all OUT! In is as healthy as possible organic whole grain, no seed oil bread in moderation. My green shakes consist of almond milk, a little probiotic milk, walnuts, turmeric, an avocado, garlic, chia seeds, cinnamon, a small amount of blueberries, 1/5 of a banana, ice….all mixed in electric mixer. I try to get grass fed organic as much as I can. Milk is sparingly, apple cider vinegar kind sickens me…somehow. I want to keep my sugar spikes down. My fasting is nearly everyday. If I eat at 6:00 pm it’s not again until noon the next day. I’ve never been greatly over weight but this has brought down to 168 lbs. I cardio about an hour and weights core 30 minutes. I’ll see my internist next week. I want to see my A1C and all my numbers down. As a pre diabetic….a lot of things I thought were healthy were terrible. Thanks again.
Do you mean seed oils instead of vegetable oils?
While EVOO is healthy, it has a low smoking point which means high-heat cooking makes it unhealthy. Avocado oil is best as it’s both healthy and very high smoke point making it safe for stir fry and deep fry.
Thanks also for the information on Olive Oil I lost a lot of fat in my stomach and walk a mile and a half every day about a month I was losing fat I couldn’t believe how much fat I lost big gracious thanks Dr.Berg
just walking?
I haven’t used vegetable oil in years yet I’m obese …I probably did unknowingly eat veg oils though because I was eating ready meals and lots of cakes .
thank you Dr Berg I’m trying so hard to get healthy and your advice is life saving 💗🙏
@CuriousCat lol 😂💗👍
@Angie
It takes 21 days to get rid of bad habits and likewise 21 days to set in good healthy habits. The best way to get rid of all cravings is to go cold turkey. No sugar, for 21 days. I did that and on day 22 I ate a piece of candy and it was sickening sweet. I couldn’t eat it. Our taste buds do change. Best wishes to you ! You have to want to change more than anything. Don’t buy those bad foods and when you have a craving at night and it’s not in your house to eat… well, that’s good then. Good riddance to “food” that only leads to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, diabetes and spending the last 10-20 years of our lives in a wheelchair with someone else having to wash and help you on and off the toilet and probably in a nursing home as well. See, the idea of all that is what keeps me moving and eating healthy 👍🏻😁💪🏻🦵🏻
@Cj Howard you’re absolutely right! Omg when you put it like that I must keep going Cj 😂👌 21 days that’s a challenge I accept 👌💗😊
@Angie
It’s not even a month long. You got this ! 👍🏻💪🏻😁
@Cj Howard awe thanks so much 🙌🙌💗💗😊👍
I`ve been doing keto diet with intermittent fasting since I came across with Dr. Eric Berg’s videos on 2021 June. My overall health increased dramatically, I still cant believe that his content is free !! Thanks a lot Dr. Eric
Same here, started in December 2019 and have felt much better since.
Wonderful! You’re very welcome!
Believe it
I started hearing about keto because fitness but Dr Berg was all about health. The topics I liked the most: potassium-sodium balance, saturated fats are good for you, avoid chemical seed oils, fasting. I fast like nothing, people think I’m crazy because of fasting but I feel like I can fast without any issue. They can’t fast because they need to eat properly first… I do IF every day and ocasionally just skip a whole day, like once every two weeks.
This is an eye opener and a good chart to follow and understand . Thanks Dr. Berg !
Most welcome! Glad you found it informative!
Let me share what happened when I ate a slice of birthday cake after 5 straight months without any sugar. I’ll make it simple. I felt like someone ran me over with a bus after the short lived glucose spike. I knew going in it might be a big mistake, and it was. Never ever ever again.
Birthday cake is sugar overload!!!! I would have gone with a mini-size of candy!
It feels like you are trying to process a brick..lol. I call it my “food hangover” the next day.
Dr.Berg you explain food and diet in such a way that makes it so easy to understand and follow. I thought I knew a lot about my diet and intake of food but since I’ve been watching you now for the last year or two my mind and body have had a change for the better. I can’t believe the amount of false or misleading information we get even when we try to follow a healthy diet that there is so much more to learn about ‘too much of a good thing can be bad for you’. I hope you can keep making these videos as you make such a difference !
WOW!!! This explains a lot. My grandmother lived to 87, lived on candy. Not saying you should be eating sugar, but she pretty much stayed away from things like french fries or deep fried foods because it would upset her stomach. I remember when they told us butter would kill us and we should eat that horrible margarine crap. Of course, made from vegetable oil. Thank you for this information!
Around the time I was born, my mother switched the family from butter to margarine. I’m the youngest and grew up with severe myopia — none of my siblings had it. My mother also died of cancer when I was a teenager. It’s wasn’t just margarine, she also loved saccharine Sweet N Low. She believed these were the healthier choices. Meanwhile her mother ate sweets galore and lived to almost 90.
Considering that all of our cells are just water balloons🎈surrounded by fats/lipids, this makes total sense! Unhealthy fats –> building unhealthy cells!
I’ve recently noticed that vegetables oils are one of the main ingredients of the most popular plant-based “milks”. Can you imagine the long-term damages on those who consume those products on a daily basis?! Thank you once again for the valuable information Dr.
Elmhurst plant milks use NO oil. Expensive but awesome.
@Mr. D. Thank you for sharing!
I’m happy to learn this, but at home, I have only exclusively cooked with Olive oil & coconut oil for the past 15 + years.
After 20 yrs working in the restaurant industry tho, I’m horrified to learn this … but thank you so much for your important videos ♥️☺️
