Today we’re going to talk about cholesterol, and I want to cover the seven foods that lower bad cholesterol.

HDL is considered good cholesterol, and LDL is considered bad cholesterol. But, there are two types of LDL. The real villain when it comes to cholesterol and heart problems is a very specific type of LDL.

To measure this type of LDL, you have to ask for a test called an advanced lipid profile test. With this test, they’re looking at the number and size of the particles that carry cholesterol.

The two types, or particle sizes, of LDL, are:
1. The large buoyant (pattern A)
2. The small dense (pattern B)

The small dense LDL particles are the ones you have to be concerned about because they can penetrate the arteries, even though the large buoyant type carries more cholesterol. Small dense LDL is a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease.

This topic can be confusing because some people have low LDL cholesterol but a high number of small dense particles. Others have high LDL with a high number of large buoyant particles. This is why it’s so important to get an advanced lipid profile test, so you have the whole picture of what’s going on.

Top foods that lower bad cholesterol (small dense LDL):
1. Extra virgin olive oil
2. Avocados
3. Fish oils or cod liver oil
4. Pistachios
5. Dark chocolate (sugar-free)
6. Almonds
7. Walnuts

Other things you can do to lower cholesterol naturally:
• Take vitamin B3 (niacin)
• Exercise
• Take TUDCA

    • @Francisco Costa buy some high quality Ox bile. Chanca Piedra helps break down stones. Also tudca is good liver cleanse. Don’t let them take out your gallbladder. Stop eating high oxalate foods. I know Dr Berg wants you to eat a lot of them but I disagree when you start getting stones

  3. type of test: advanced lipid profile test

    • Niacin, you want the flush. Don’t let someone tell you otherwise. Rugby brand on Amazon lowered my triglycerides and ldl a ton and raised my hdl. Start small and increase.

    • @tom stickel Could you please help me by telling how small dose I should start because my total cholesterol and LDL is very high. I just came to know from blood T. I wanna order from Amazon Rugby Niacin should I order 500mg or 1000mg ?? Please let me know will really appreciate your help!

    • @fidel catsrb. Can you please help on Tudca. Should I buy TUDCA in powder form or tablet ?? How much dose should be ?? My cholesterol and triglycerides both are very high. Should I take both Tadca and niacin ? Tudca I was checking notice should buy gluten free or regular one ? Please response!

    • I have taken tudca tablets. But have no idea if they work. Niacin , the flushing type for sure what. Rugby 500 mg tablets on Amazon are great IMO

    • @tom stickel Thank you for your help ! I also need help on TUDCA. My total cholesterol and triglycerides both are very high and NON HDL Cholesterol also high 214. Should I take both Tadca and niacin ? Tudca I was checking notice should buy gluten free or regular one ? Please response!

  4. Hi Dr Berg. I’ve been following your channel for some time and you’ve really helped me improve my diet and lifestyle. One idea for a video I had was to get your opinion on cheaper foods especially with the current cost of living crisis many are facing. For example those that can’t afford to buy organic meat, what’s the best type of meat to go for? I’ve heard in UK that non organic lamb is better than chicken due to it mostly being grass fed. It would be interesting to hear your take. Thanks again.

    • In the US lamb ain’t cheap. I did read a long time ago lamb’s one of the best bio available animal proteins for humans, but don’t take my word for it.

    • Recently found a local farm close by that sells prepared meats and raw milk (hard to find in the US) and was wondering if that type of source may meet your needs

  5. My doc’s office is struggling to understand why my LDL is so high yet my triglycerides are in well within normal range. they recommend “less fat, more fiber”. I told them they should test for small dense and large buoyant LDLs and still just got a response back of, “start on a low fat, high fiber diet”. that IS my diet, has been for years lol.

  6. Thanks again Dr. B!!!
    This is something a girlfriend (She is a Doctor) told me about decades ago and every one I shared it with thought she was nuts because the mainstream medical establishment definitely wasn’t saying it.
    I love how you share these amazing truths about our health. ❤

    • i worked at an egg ranch around the time they came down on eggs. thats when i learned good and bad cholesterol. 😲

  7. Dr Berg – this is a great list. I have to add a comment here that for years I ate these and my cholesterol levels did not go down. I was not gaining too much weight overall. I was skinny fat.

    However, I had toxins in my systems. Once I started using clays to cleanse everyday, the protruding gut disappeared in 3 weeks! I guess the clays bound to the fats in the gut and cleaned them out repeatedly over the 21 days. I look slimmer now. So, perhaps this is something others can try. Oh, I did tests at the end of last month and all my cholesterol levels were in the normal range.

    I am about to hit to 2 month mark on clays. I intend to go on using them daily for another month, then cut it down to 2-3 times a week for maintenance.

  8. I learned more in this video what good vs bad cholesterol means and how they are different than from what I learned from my own physician over the years.

  9. I love eating everything on this list almost on a daily basis. That’s one more reason why I have no worries eating an omelet with pasture raised eggs every day!

  10. My understanding of LDL is from the liver’s inability to metabolize sugar completely into blood, leaving nano particles to get trapped and cling together (jagged edges) in narrow capillaries of the brain, kidneys, liver and acute angles in the vascular system, including pockets around heart valves. Sugar is a crystal after all.

  11. Super fit, my ldl was 150 and total chloestrol was 205. Doctor immediately wanted to put me on meds. No other issues

  12. Keep in mind that many hormones are made from cholesterol! So, A) it’s not intrinsically bad and B) I’ve seen many cases of high cholesterol come down when we balance the person’s hormones! 😊

  13. There is a direct relationship between triglycerides and the types of LDL particles. There is a published graph that shows that having low triglycerides gives high fluffy ldl and low small ldl. Using this graph and my triglycerides of 48 mg/dl, my large fluffy ldl was over 99%.

  14. If you’re worried about LDL, you probably want to look up the videos by Doctor David Diamond, a cardiologist. It’s mostly bunk unless you have a specific genotype. If anything, you might want to look at Lipoprotein (a), HDL, and LDL-P (as Dr Berg indicated.) What most keto dieters see is their HDL rising, which is good, and triglycerides falling, which is also good.

    LDL can vary in either direction for people on keto. I was a couple weeks fasted when I got my panel once, and my LDL was over 200, which concerned my (non-keto-friendly) doctor. I had watch some Dave Feldman videos (Cholesterol Code guy) to find out why. I implemented the Feldman Protocol next time, and my doctor was happy. Then I told him how I crammed for his test and fired him. I now have a respected keto doctor.

  15. I’m a pharmacist and shockingly it was never mentioned the two different particle types of LDL. These days I’m questioning all that we were taught 🙄 .. I look back and I’m convinced it was pharmacorps-driven rather than purely true physiology… it’s infuriating

  16. I lost 150lbs on Healthy Keto – from 321lbs to 170lbs. My lipid profile now is: Total Cholesterol = 169
    Triglycerides = 42
    HDL = 64
    VLDL = 9
    LDL = 96
    My lipid profile before Keto was way out of normal.

  17. After intermittent fasting (18/6) for 2 months and strength training for 3 months: I ditched the cardio for now so I could compare.
    My LDL is 174,
    My VLDL is 15
    Trigylc is 86 (best ever)
    HDL is 51
    Total Cholest is 240
    Glucose is 88 (usually high 90’s low 100’s)
    I take Vascepa and Zetia

  18. Dear Dr. Berg, since June 22 I’m following your recommendations for intermittent fasting (now reaching an alternant OMAD) with low carb / Keto diet and I lost almost 10 KGs (I’m 1.75 m) . Many thanks for opening me the eyes….
    All the best for you from Switzerland
    Juan Carlos
