Let's talk about the best natural remedy to prevent heart attacks: niacin.

There's a lot of research on niacin that goes back decades. A placebo-controlled study called the Coronary Drug Project used niacin to show incredible results.

It's important to get the type of niacin that gives you a flush—extended-release niacin is best.

The benefits of niacin:
• It can significantly lower cholesterol
• It has potent cardiovascular protection effects
• It's been found to decrease monocytes and other white blood cells and the inflammation that goes along with them
• It can lower CRP (a predictor of heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke)

Niacin inhibits:
• Vascular oxidation
• Oxidative LDL
• Vascular inflammation
• Lipid deposits on artery walls
• Triglycerides

Niacin has the power to slow and reverse arteriosclerosis. It can decrease the mortality risk in people who have cardiovascular disease. It may also prevent endothelial dysfunction and can significantly reduce adhesions in the artery walls. It even increases HDL—known as the "good" cholesterol.

Statins are a common medication for high cholesterol. It's true that statins block and lower cholesterol. But there is no evidence that statins reduce your risk of heart attacks.

Statins work by blocking the production of cholesterol. The problem is that you need cholesterol to make bile salts. Without bile salts, you can't absorb important vitamins. You also need cholesterol to make testosterone.

It's unknown whether statins increase your life or not. But we do know they have a lot of side effects, including:
• Blocking coenzyme Q10 (the heart requires coenzyme Q10)
• Muscle wasting
• Low blood pressure
• Heart failure
• Muscle aches and pain

If you're concerned about your heart, talk to your doctor about taking niacin.

  1. My doctor uses anger as a tool of manipulation. If I present any information that differs from what the doctor has promoted, the doctor gets angry, raises voice and storms out of room, slamming door. I believe that this is unprofessional and inappropriate.

    • Can I ask why you choose this as your health care professional? I see that alot , people complaining about their own health care professional?

    • Wow, I have a post almost identical to this on another Dr. Berg video..my doctor (cardiologist) got angry and stormed out of the room also, because I questioned a couple things..weird!

    • @Jim Rutherford “on the verge”?? I’m glad you never went back, but you’re a stronger person than I. I would have told him to stick his medical degree where the sun don’t shine and walk out immediately. What an *as that doctor is. 😒 I sure wish all docs were like Dr. Berg.

  2. Dr Berg I read years ago that the time released form of niacin can damage the liver. Is that no longer the case?

  3. Thank you Dr. Berg! I will include niacin in my daily regime. It’s always great to know a remedy that can do many things for the body at such a small cost. 🥰

  4. This is interesting because I literally just read an article last week that said that Vitamin B3 (niacin) was recently found to increase cancer risk although it has been long recommended for prevention of other ailments. Because of this article, I switched to a new hair, skin and nail vitamin as the one I was taking before had niacin in it. Any insights?

    • Too high a dosage can cause a severe reaction. I had it happen to me many years ago. My face became beet red and my lips became swollen. I only took one pill and this happened to me. This doesn’t happen when I take a vitamin B complex supplement.

    • I’d say that research is biased. B3 helps increase the level of NAD+, which turns off the aging gene. Because cancer cells are immortal, they say B3 helps tumors grow. Yet there are many natural chemicals from food that can prevent tumors from happening in the first place, and they didn’t take that into consideration.

    • @MMelody M Do your research better. That was not a “severe” reaction. It’s called flushing. After several days of the same dose, your reaction will be close to zero. I take 4 to 8 grams (yes, grams) daily.

    • @MMelody M In Vitamin B complex they usually use Nicotinamide instead of Niacin. Nicotinamide is the alternative “flush free” version of B3.

  5. RE: My recommendations for the type of Niacin. You won’t have options for buying this vitamin (synthetic or natural). The only thing to keep in mind with buying niacin, to get the benefits I described is that you want the one that creates the flushing response. The non-flush doesn’t give you the heart benefits, however, does give different benefits.

    • I am confused about which version of Niacin you are recommending. Usually the extended release is what is recommended when you do not want the flush. You say to get the one that gives you the flush, but that tends to not be the extended release. It is my understanding that extended release and the version that give a flush are two different things. I am in the Functional Medicine field, so I am very familiar with nutraceuticals. Dr. Berg, can you please clarify this flush vs. extended release option? With Gratitude!

    • Where can I find the $3.19 correct one to buy? There so many on Amazon, I got lost. My heart been feeling bad recently thanks for the video Dr.

  6. Thank you so much Dr Berg.
Oxidized LDL seems to be a primary villain for cardiovascular disease.
Those of us who are genetically predisposed to high levels of small LDL, live in fear of it oxidizing but don’t know how to prevent it from happening.
This advice could potentially save millions of lives.
God bless you for sharing it.

  7. The list of effects of statins is way longer and more dangerous than what you just mentioned doctor…God bless you Dr Berg ❤

  8. My primary form of Niacin supplementation is 1/4 lb of beef liver twice a week. It’s less than $5 for a pound of 4 individually wrapped, frozen portions.

  9. Thank you for the very well needed health information. I am in my mid 40’s and it is a good time to start taking something like this to prevent something that could be life changing in the near future.

  10. There are nicotinic acid and niacinamide forms of B3. Dr. Berg recommends the nicotinic acid form (the one that causes that flushed feeling/appearance) in the extended release dosage.👍

  11. Thank you Dr. Berg, I enjoy your videos as well. Just some information that might help with some questions out there. I can tell you from my own experience on and off I have taken nicotinic acid for years. For me I’ve always stuck with the unbuffered/rapid-release niacin, not extended-release, and I cycle it, meaning I don’t take it every day, and I only take it when I feel like crap (brain fog and/or really lethargic and stuffy/congested). It works really well for this. A couple of things to be aware of… 1) Start by taking the smallest dose that produces the “flushing” effect. For me it was 250mg (500 cut in half). On an empty stomach the “flush” will come on pretty quickly (15-20 minutes after dosing), and will last for 20-30 minutes (or longer for some people). I actually like what it does, the heat, the redness, the clearing of your mind and your sinuses (something you don’t experience with any other vitamin). If you fear that it will be too much of a shock to your system, eat something prior to dosing and it will buffer the effects (delay/minimize). I prefer NOT to buffer because I want the maximum benefit (LOL). 2) After getting used to taking, when the dose no longer produces the “flush”, you can move up to 500mg (the most I’ve ever needed). 3) Cycle it. Take it only when you need it (when you feel like crap), and don’t overdo it. For me it’s one or two days on, and three or four days off. The reason I do it is because I have firsthand experience and know what will happen if you don’t cycle. Look at it kind of like fasting, where you give your body some time to normalize itself/to heal. In fact, I’d recommend cycling just about anything you put in your body (just my opinion)…

    • Thanks for sharing!! This us great information!!! I have afib whereas my heart beats fast and I get light headed here and there. It was recommended that I take potassium and magnesium and drink plenty of water. It does help! I rather not take the meds my doctor prescribed!

Should I take niacin as well??

    • Can you clear something up for me? Dr. Berg said to get the “extended release” but when I look that up, it says it helps to *avoid* the flush. But all the comments are talking about the benefits of the flush. So what is better? Extended release with no flush… or immediate release with flush?

  12. I’ve been taking an antioxidant, Glutathione stack of Niacin 500mg, N-Acetyl-Cysteine 1200mg, and Nicotinamide Mononucleotide 750mg. I feel great, have lots of energy, fast muscle recovery from a HIT workout and I grow hair like a werewolf (not sure related). Are there side effects of Niacin overload? BTW, I’m 54 yr old simi-active male. Could we please get a deep dive into NAC and NMN supplements?

    • @D G No particular brand. just major players on Walmart online cause Amazon stopped selling it for awhile. The NAC is from Life Extensions and NMN is from Vivalifer. I also take Magnesium Glycinate in the mornings and Magnesium L-Thoriate at night. you have a good doctor if he recommended NAC. They are rare as hens teeth. I haven’t seen a doc in 36 years.

    • @PickledHamProduction Actually I think I told her about NAC (I am a research hound) and she approved. Watch out for LE. I used to buy all their stuff but found out most is synthetic. I use PURE brand now. I should grab some more NAC. THREONATE is too pricey. I found the Glycinate worked just as well. Take it before bed so you can sleep better. If you eat well, 150mg pill should be enough unless you need a therapeutic dose. After my brain injury I took up to 3 a day, with the doctors OK. Best to buy direct since you want to avoid fake supplements.

    • @D G Thank you for info. i will watch out for that. hate it when the company includes maltodextrin in their supplements. Since you like research do you watch @ThomasDeLauerOfficial videos?

    • @PickledHamProduction Sure and yes, of course I do. He is very good. They add too many things like silica too. Always go natural too, not synthetic. Is there a Niacin brand you like? I am searching now. I could get a powder but pills are easier- but full of other stuff I don’t want.

  13. Dr. Berg I took a product called “Acnetame” couple years back as I was looking for something to control breakouts. It contained Niacin 25mg. Little did I know i would get a bad reaction…..🤦‍♂️I was young 26yrs fit and active and when I took this product I was Flushed 😳like you said. I was so flushed that I started having chills and my legs were shaking…. I had to get rushed to the ER that night as I didn’t know what the hell was wrong with me. The ER doctors 🥼 told me I had high levels of Niacin in my blood 🩸. I believe they said it gets stored in the muscle tissue. Since I had too much in my system I started having tremors and was cold 🥶. My body was flushed by the B3 and was trying to get rid of it. TO ALL PEOPLE, Please be advised that Niacin is very Beneficial and can treat many health issues. But it’s not for everybody especially if your someone who Naturally has a lot of energy. Thank You 🙏 Dr. Berg for the great content just wanted to let others knows side effects that can occur.

  14. I am so happy i discovered you’re channel you’ve helped me more than you can imagine and your supplements I really believe makes a difference. My diabetic mom who had a lump very visible in her chest was told by doctors its nothing, one day suddenly died from a heart rupture and failed surgery. I feel it everyday but I’m thankful that you are doing your work to educate and help many of use across the world!. Blessings to you!

  15. Dr. Berg is correct with his info. My cholesterol numbers were terrible about two years ago. My doctor wanted to put me on a statin. I did a bit a research and found that niacin had potential benefits. After six months of taking 1000 mg of niacin per day my cholesterol numbers have been perfect and I’ve never felt better. My total cholesterol dropped from 286 to 152 and my LDL/HDL numbers are perfectly within range.

  16. Dr. would you recommend getting niacin from food sources as opposed to a supplement. I was reading that long term use of supplemental niacin in doses as low as 500-1,000 mg per day could stress the liver and cause liver toxicity. It says the receptors on the liver to flush out the niacin could become overwhelmed.
