10:12 Learn more about sleep!

Let’s talk about why you feel sleepy after eating. If you consume a high-carb diet or even a high-protein diet with a lot of carbs, you elevate blood sugar and insulin levels. This leads to insulin resistance.

When you have insulin resistance, your cells resist insulin and fuel. This means that when you eat, the fuel isn’t going into the cells, causing the cells to lack energy.

Other causes of fatigue after eating include:
• Overeating
• Low hydrochloric acid
• Lack of sleep
• Snacking
• Reactivated virus

What to do for afternoon sleepiness:
1. Run your body on ketones (get on the keto diet and do intermittent fasting)
2. Fix your sleep
3. Delay drinking your coffee in the morning by 90 to 120 minutes after waking up
4. Take apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride right before you eat

  1. south Brazil also has a strong ‘siesta'(cochilo/nap) culture. small cities even close stores after lunch for people to rest, but that of course does not happen in the capital

  2. So this definitely starts as a child. Babies go right to sleep. We put our little ones to sleep after lunch for a nap. And then when we become adults and you’re not at work, well it’s definitely more comfortable to take a nap, and then get up and go about your daily duties. I’m only ever sleepy now because I’m overweight and pregnant every year 😅 KETO ALWAYS HELPS ME reset after giving birth.

    • This would explain quite a bit, my parents wouldn’t let us nap right after eating, they waited an hour and also once you were 4 1/2 you no longer took naps. I do get tired sometimes after eating lunch but I NEVER nap.

  3. I always thought that Siestas were to rest during the hottest part of the day so one isn’t over exerted🤔. Those that take siestas happen to be nearer the equator. I totally agree with you though about the food crashes. My children were just the opposite though. Right after they ate, they were always really energetic while I felt drained and exhausted.

( ps: Post Prandial Somnolence best describes my cat!!)
    Thank you Dr Berg! 🐱👍🏿

    • @Omodiagbe Dominic Edeoghon its called parameowpathetic rest and digest afterall, so if you eat need to rest and digest like my cat 🐱👍🏿.. 😆😆

    • Anal of 10-20 minutes in hot summer days in Baghdad after driving in hot car without air conditioning is really charging my batteries.Arrived home with flat batteries ,eat little or no eating mahatma short sleep gave energy to start private clinic from 3 pm to 10 pm,after morning hospital work 7am-2pm.

    • @Omodiagbe Dominic Edeoghon doubt it , after watching the video it seems to be when you have to many carbs . carbs like pasta and pizza aren’t natural food

  5. I used to have that problem before, but since I changed my diet and started doing fasting, everything changed for the better. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Thanks for another great video.
I used to get sleepy after lunch at work and I now practise having one meal a day. I no longer feel sleepy on the afternoon and have gone from 85kg to 77kg in the last 7 months doing intermittent fasting.

  7. When you have one meal a day, you’re not sleepy after lunch. You have lots of energy,
    Dr. Berg! ❤ Thank you!

    • @Yt Comms3 What is your point? That the French and Italians nap as physiological response to their lunch?

    • You are absolutely right with that statement. Anyone can make the necessary changes for Better Health. You just have to be determined to make that change.

    • I’m not disagreeing with you, necessarily, but what I’ve noticed is that the meal that breaks the fast does slow me down. If you’re OMAD, that one meal would break the fast. The reason for this is that when fasting, you’re basically getting noradrenaline, and it stops when you eat. Thus, I try to get important work done fasted, when I’m sharper. This generally includes working out.

PS: I don’t do OMAD, but I have done it for a while, and prefer to get more protein absorption with two or three meals. If three, the first meal is almost all animal protein, and the others are keto to allow my insulin level to come back down. This is all for higher protein absorption.

    • I have heard about that being the best. Not a lot of food choice in my medium size seaside town in England. There used to be but now now. Not decent fresh food, anyway.

  8. Me I get up at 3:00am, coffee,exercise , breakfast,work,lunch at 9:00am, nap at 12:00, 🍎/peanut butter &tea. Dinner at 4:00pm, bed at 7:00pm, been doing this for 40 years.❤💪

    • This is a sincere question: if you’re up when the rest of the world is asleep, you nap when the society is up and running, and you go to bed at the hour when everyone else is socializing…. Do you have any friends? I am truly curious because I go to bed at 10:30pm and I’m already having a hard time keeping up with my social circle as a middle age adult.

    • @Kathleen Reys my lifestyle is parallel with a handful of friends and family. The type of work that I do requires that I show up early which I like because I’m an early bird and I get off early so I have the afternoon to enjoy the things that I like to do on my time.off It’s something I’ve done for years so it’s a normal way of life. I so love the mornings weather it be various types of exercise or just reading, so quiet and peaceful.. I may even do chores in the early morning so when I do get off work, I’m free.❤️‍🩹😀

  9. Die off (candida or bacterial) can also cause fatigue. That’s what I experience. I have been getting enough sleep, but I do go in and out of bouts of fatigue at times. Thank you!

    • I’m in process of getting rid of candida and bacteria yes it makes you fatigued. What’s best supplement to get rid of it

    • @Damisn Silletti This past Friday Dr Berg had his stream and in passing he recommended Oregano Oil and _Garlic_ tablets to a guest for her candida. Garlic _tablets_ were something I hadn’t tried and it helps a lot! But like most things, it’s a complex. I chew on whole Fennel Seeds hours before a meal, I plan to add Anise to it as a mix, combine that with Milk Thistle tablets/capsules and munching on whole Ginger slices after (or before) a meal should help. Get your bile going!

Edit: it’s important to mention that I practice OMAD and 48 intermittent fasting on weekends or every other weekend, and I’ve been doing that for about almost a year now. None of this will work without the keto and the fasting.

  10. Thank you for all you do to make it easy for the layman to understand Dr Berg! There may be an even sharper connection between what we eat and how alert we feel. So if we’re eating pasta or french fries around noon and feeling sleepy around 3pm. Our meal could be to blame.

  11. Dr. Berg be one of the only dudes who doesn’t spam you with random drugs or bro science but goes to the root cause and gives you the solution for it similar to how ayurveda works in India. Give this man a Nobel !

  12. I’m 54.
Intermittent fasting and 1 high protein meal a day work for me.
People at work look at me like I’m crazy.
    They’re over weight and tired.
I look forward to Dr Berg video’s.
    Always great advice.
    Thank you sir.

  13. I’ve been struggling with this for a dozen years. A plain chicken salad for lunch will put me to sleep. It has helped to go near carnivore. Any carbs send my insulin soaring; then I’m out like a light. This video is extremely helpful!

  14. I do yoga nidra every single day 2-3 hours after my OMAD … 20-30 mins …it compensates for any lack of sleep at night and keeps me energetic for my evening gym workouts ….

  15. Oh yeah, that happened to me before I was diagnosed diabetic. I had it bad after eating at midday. When I beat diabetes by fasting and eating keto that went away.

Also, this is why you shouldn’t plan an important meeting, speech or other work activity after lunch—because so many people will be falling asleep on you.

  16. Thank you so much for this information. I have been worried about this for the last couple of years and kept thinking there was something wrong with me. I’m 62 and this information has just changed my life. Thank you so much. May God Bless you and keep you always❤️🙏

  17. Thank you so much for your excellent videos throughout the years. My health is so much better just by your videos! Including with my energy levels!
