Today we’re going to talk about the best food to help prevent cancer: broccoli sprouts.

There is a specific chemical in broccoli called sulforaphane that has a potent ability to kill cancer cells. But, sulforaphane is much more concentrated in broccoli sprouts than in broccoli.

Some people will tell you that sulforaphane is toxic, but it’s only toxic to cancer cells, not your own cells.

Benefits of sulforaphane for cancer:
• It can help slow down metastasis
• It can stimulate autophagy
• It can decrease DNA damage in the cells
• It can stimulate phase 2 detoxification in the liver

Broccoli sprouts can also be beneficial for those who have certain weaknesses within their genes that increase their susceptibility to cancer.

Broccoli sprouts even have a unique hormetic effect. This means that there are certain chemicals in broccoli sprouts that create mild stress causing the body to become stronger to fight off cancer.

To increase the effectiveness of sulforaphane, all you have to do is heat your broccoli sprouts just slightly. If you overheat them, you can destroy the compound. You would only want to heat them to 70 degrees Celsius or 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

Try adding your broccoli sprouts to a container filled with one cup of boiled water and one-half cup of room-temperature water.

Soak the broccoli sprouts for ten minutes, rinse them, and put them in the refrigerator. Then you can add your broccoli sprouts to your salads, smoothies, or other meals.

  1. I never had broccoli sprouts Dr Berg! Sounds delicious, I’m going to check my local Whole Foods, thank you! ❤🥦

    • @Lambert Klein there are seeds and starting kits that can be purchased online. You can likely find broccoli sprouts at some grocery stores but they will cost a bit more vs growing them. I’ve found that, when growing your own, you’ll have sprouts ready to eat 3-5 days after starting. Good luck to you. Bonus, I think they taste great.

    • Found these sprouts at Safeway/Albertsons produce section close to the organic vegetables. Not always there thanks to the current poor energy policies and ‘supply chain’ issues (who did that?). As far as spouts go, they are rather peppery flavored require something like a quality olive oil to tone them down just a bit.

    • Haha, not delicious. You need half a cup, and it needs to be chewed up to work best. Use a blender and maybe add some mustard seeds. You can research why. Putting them on a salad as a topping may not be doing much.

  2. These are actually super easy to grow yourself and you can use organic seeds. Heating them is interesting. Any pros or cons to consuming them frozen and adding them to green smoothies?

    • Although this might seem fringe, I suggest that eating slightly/lightly cooked might be the best way overall to eat these green (and cauliflower) vegetables. Firstly to maintain nutrient content but mostly to exercise the jaw muscles (and develop jaw bone shape in childhood) – I have noticed that people that eat mostly processed and gloop-food simply don’t have to chew and have weak looking faces. 🥦

    • @badlandskid yes, I wonder if the question is now settled as to which way is best, i.e., frozen, crushed, warmed, etc.

    • @MICHELLE KELLEY – MA Licensed Real Estate Broker Likely does not matter much. In nature it would be room temp. That works for me.

    • @MICHELLE KELLEY – MA Licensed Real Estate Broker On the frozen question I suggest that the laboratory tests show that frozen sprouts show higher sulforaphane content because the cell walls are destroyed when frozen, however if eaten whole/fresh you will be getting the whole plant/sulforaphane content as nature intended. I like the crunch of fresh, I wonder if that is a long learnt human/animal thing to eat the best and the best veg is often fresh and crunchy. Do rabbits like limp carrots?

  3. Great information Dr. Berg. You are such a valuable service to me. Apparently 8.96 million people have he same opinion as I do.

    • @Dr. Eric Berg DC hi Dr. Berg, thanks for all that u do for us, we really appreciate it and thanks once again. Could you please make a video about sickle cell anemia. There is not much information about the foods that u can eat daily to manage the disease. One just has to take a lot of medication.

Am sure there are foods that could be helpful. Could u please inform us about these if u have any idea. The disease is serious and could be fatal in some cases. I than u in advance

  4. Very interesting information as usual. A vegetable having known properties to kill cancer!! Wow!
Dr. Berg really don’t know how to thank you.
Everyday you come up with something different and so simple to cure and prevent disease. Kudos to you
    👍👍👍

  5. My dad has lost 5 siblings to cancer. My sweet father now has stage 4 kidney, lung cancer so thank for your cancer information helps! I will be hunting for broccoli sprouts tomorrow and getting those to him.

    • Publix stocks locally in Nashville stores in the refrigerated vegetable section.
The are unassuming in a small plastic square container usually on a shelf with other like size containers. Not laying loose like some veggies. Don’t let the container fool you. It’s a large amount. Very earthy smell and taste. Need to mix with other food like make part of your salad. Maybe juice. Strong taste alone.
      Good luck

    • Send my prayer a miracle healing for your beloved father ! Your such a noble children God bless your soul ! 💖🕊🙏🏼

  6. God bless you Eric. Seriously. I find out if I indeed do have cancer on Dec 6 2022. I have already done my best to implement every single countermeasure you describe across your many years of videos. It’s quite possibly life or death now, and I choose life.
Thank you sir, you are a blessing. Never forget that!

  7. I am 60 and was diagnosed with osteoporosis after my first fracture at 50. I’ve been growing and eating broccoli sprouts ever since. They are a great source of absorbable calcium. It’s incredibly easy to grow them in a jar on my kitchen counter. Search for instructions on YT and buy seeds online.

    • Things to research on your own: (1) check out vitamin D3 and K2 (MK7) and also boron and magnesium. (2) calcium supplementation may exacerbate osteoporosis; anyone who takes lots of D3 should definitely avoid calcium supplementation (broccoli sprouts excepted, of course), especially in the absence of K2 and magnesium as one could induce a magnesium deficiency. Excess calcium probably upsets the balance of other minerals necessary for optimum bone health. Consider boron, phosphorous, etc.

    • @Julie Oelker I have severe Osteoporosis and Multiple Spine Fractures = 6min Thoracic, 4 in Lumbar, Cervical and awaiting ANOTHER MRI Result for Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar….I won’t take Big Pharma’s Poison e.g. Bisphosphinates, Prolia, teriparitide, accrete, Adcal etc…..I do take Vitamin D3/K2 supplements, Zinc Complex, Vitamin C, Selenium Vitamin B12 sublingual, Super B Complex…..I am Late 60’s, weigh about 64kg (not fat), don’t follow any ‘diet’, but I will certainly try the broccoli sprouts and Anything *Natural* which makes Sense…….

    • Eric Berg did a video 4 years ago entitled: “Benefits of Boron” check it out, it explains info you may need.

    • @Sue Thompson Dairy would only help if it raw. Pasteurized dairy is not good for you.
If you look into vitamin K2 in an M-K 7 form. It takes calcium from your soft tissue(arteries) and deposits it where you actually need the calcium like your bones and tooth enamel.

Calcium supplements give people heart attacks. They deposit the calcium in your arteries.

      Happy healing!

  8. Thanks for the facts Dr. Berg. I bought a sprouting tray years ago but I’m embarrassed to say I have not been using it. Just washed it off, and am soaking some seeds. What great timing for a winter health therapy.
Thank you for all you do!!

  9. The man at 2:23 is Doctor Anthony Chaffee. A neurosurgeon and former professional athlete. He has followed a Carnivore diet for most of his life and is certainly a person of respectable intellect. As usual there are multiple dimensions of understanding to complex topics. It would be great if you could have an online discussion with him, Dr. Berg, and bounce your differing perspectives off each other?

  10. Thank you Dr. Berg, I am a stage 4 cancer survivor and have been cancer free since 2015. My question is do broccoli microgreens work the same way as the sprouts? Are they the same thing?

  11. Dr Berg takes the info a step further and explains it in ways the “medical professionals” never do.
This is why we love him and wouldn’t miss one episode ever!

  12. Recently saw the whole video that was excerpted here and recognized it immediately. The selective toxicity catch was the reason I had reservations about that plan and didn’t prescribe to it. Those with celiac disease are prime candidates for that diet though. Thank you for highlighting this since that presenter had me wondering if inflammatory responses to plants can shorten lifespans.

  13. Thank you, Dr. Berg! You’ve bailed my family out of various health problems, a few of them were scary, and you’ve made us feel more in charge of our health. We’re so lucky you’re here!!!

  14. I wish you were around making this content when my mother had cancer. Thank you for the service you are providing to humanity. Stay healthy everyone!

  15. I lost both my parents and 2 siblings to cancer. Most recently a brother last April 2022. I am terrified and that is why I am here. Thank you Dr. Berg for the information and knowledge you provide.

  16. Dr. Berg. I’ve benefitted from a thousand of your informative videos, and I’m going to follow today’s advice on broccoli sprouts. Today’s video featured an abnormally large number of special effects. Production techniques such as aural sound effects, supportive comments, visual flashes, quick panning and closeup flashes. It was over the top. More so, than all of your past videos. I found it distracting. A few specialized production gimmicks always make videos more professional. However, the number of special effects you used today… turned you into a carnival barker. You are much too trusted by millions of viewers, for professional information of substance… to want to turn yourself into a cheap cartoon. My recommendation for you, is to scale it back a bit. Straight-laced is OK. Luv Ya, Jeff Prentice, Myrtle Beach SC.

  17. This is amazing! I feel like Dr. B is the only person who tells us what’s actually going on rather than leaving us hopeless and dependent on pills

  18. Thank you Dr. Berg. Another researcher Dr. Rhonda Patrick, who is highly regarded for her work also posted many times about the anti cancer power of broccoli sprouts. Lots of videos on YT how to make them. Let’s all do it!!!

  19. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 4. Worst day of my life by far. But Dr. Berg’s videos have become a regular part of my healing and broccoli sprouts are always in our house!
