Today, we’re going to talk about the different causes of mucus in the back of your throat.

Some traditional treatments for excess phlegm can come with side effects that create bigger problems. So, I also want to cover some great natural remedies for mucus in your throat.

Potential causes of constant mucus and how to get rid of mucus:
1. GERD
• Take apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride before meals

2. Postnasal drip
• Use a neti pot with water and sea salt (for mild cases)
• Use a neti pot with water and a small amount of baby shampoo (for more severe cases)
• Use a Q-tip to apply a diluted povidone-iodine mixture to the inside of both nostrils and gargle with the rest of the mixture

3. Allergies
• Avoid potential environmental triggers
• Do intermittent and prolonged fasting
• Avoid dairy

You can also try a unique acupressure technique that I’ve found works wonders to get rid of mucus—and don't forget to support your immune system.

The best ways to support your immune system:
1. Consume more garlic
2. Avoid sugar
3. Take vitamin D
4. Take vitamin C
5. Take zinc
6. Take calcium lactate (for a cough)

  1. Good Morning , Dr.Berg ☕
I sure do appreciate you ! Thank you so much sharing this great advice with everybody , May God continue to bless you all , Take care 💜

  2. I have been doing this nasal rinse for decades (very little need over the last years). The salinity of the saline needs to be similar to the salinity of your serum. If it is significantly lower or higher, flushing will sting. Also it feels better if the saline is around your body temperature.
With this method I have killed chronic sinusitis and ended the need for medical treatment.

    • @Evelyn Daisy my family just got over it battled it for three weeks. Inhad to sleep in a chair and took over the counter cold and flew meds ,the antibiotics the doctor gave us did nothing just has to run its course take IBUPROFEN and tylenol every other time worked the best

    • @Evelyn Daisy Every time your sinuses are full, flush as best you can. Don’t push out too hard or else you could damage your ear drums.
I am not giving any advice, I am merely saying what I did to succeed. Different people are different and only professionals are allowed to give advice.

  3. I use a double head AC electric heavy deep tissue massager with the long handle and different changeable head adaptors. They’re good for massaging the whole body from head to toe, even your own back, shoulders, and neck and face. Perfect for blood and lymph circulation and sore muscles. Found it on Amazon.

  4. With keto I got rid of candida and excessive mucus. My tongue used to have a white coating all the time. After 5 month of keto…I lost 40 pounds without exercise. I used to have chronic sinusitis, asthma and COPD. Thanks to Berg I controlled allergies and all my respiratory conditions using 0serrapeptase 240SPU (3 times a day), D³, zinc and garlic. Also kimchi juice is great!

    • @S Mendoza Watch some of Dr. Berg’s video about motivation. He talks about it being more physiological than mental. Like you may have a candida which can cause depression so your body is craving foods to release the serotonin, which is a hormone released when you’re eating carbohydrates. So your body craves the carbs for a quick pick me up and also because the candida thrives in an environment like that. Watch his videos on fasting and healthy keto.

    • It is as if Dr. Berg can read my mind. I just bought a few medicines that are supposed to remove mucus in the throat. But they don’t work. I try now sitting under a blanket with a pot of salt water and an immersion heater to inhale saltwater steam.

  5. Thank you Dr Berg for your continued great video content. Dr Berg can you say what gives rise to tonsillitis in both it’s forms-acute and chronic? Then it begs the question what can one do to naturally prevent and cure this ailment? Can it be transferred as in when kissing? Thanks in advance. Keep up the great work.

  6. I had reflux and post-nasal drip for years. Both stopped within days of eliminating sugars and starches from my diet.

    • Neither stopped for me by getting rid of carbs, sugars, dairy, fats . I do occasionally use the sinus rinse especially since the pandemic started. A temporary relief. Breathing over a pot of hot steamy water with thyme, sage, rosemary in it helps.

  7. Thanks! I got very lucky and was able to dodge some dairy sugars this weekend because I’ve been dealing with this specific issue post Thanksgiving weekend meal. I avoided grains, but the leftovers probably had a bit of influence from stuffing (maybe from a knife or residue from a spoon on the meat), and it takes so little to screw a person up! I’m over coming it, but I definitely appreciate this advice! Thank you!

  8. Dr. Berg, Any thoughts on a heavy mucus production hitting the throat after every meal? Especially hot or spicy meals.

  9. Right up my alley today. Thanks Doc. A reminder of what my nutritionist, Louise Rossi in New York City always used to tell me about the sugar, yeast, Candida, water, saltwater rinses. You name it. I have all that crap going on right now. A cold? Could be, but I’m not eating right that’s for sure. Thanks again for the content.

    • My allegorist as a kid said, “flush it out.. If its’ a cold, drink lots of water… sinuses, eat spice foods.”

  10. The start made me laugh!! Omg!! This is so me!! Constant post nasal drip. I feel like I’m drowning in it. Saving to watch later! Thank you Dr Berg!

  11. Good morning from Michigan👋🏽 ever since I was a kid Ive always had sinus/mucus problems 24/7 365, but now that I started the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting all my sinus problems vanished. I was eating homemade kimchi for a while but recently switched to my homemade lemon dill sauerkraut daily and noticed ever since I started eating both kimchi and sauerkraut how big of an impact it has had on my sinuses. Ever time I eat either kimchi or sauerkraut it drains my sinuses throughly… I can breath much better. And on top of that I consume roughly 1/4- 1/2 tsp of sea salt daily and that has done wonders for me also, hardly ever get phlegm in the back of my throat anymore. It has helped my sleep big time too, I used to have trouble falling asleep because I was always so congested, but not anymore 🙌🏽

As always, thanks for your time Doc!
Keep up the good work ✊🏽

    • @M. Mimi that’s a good title to have, I think America is near the bottom of the list when it comes to fermented food rankings lol. I’m still a amateur when it comes to fermented foods so I appreciate you sharing your recipe, I’m always looking for something new to try, I’ll definitely add to my Arsenal!👍🏼

    • @cogit8able 🤔interesting. I know that gargling apple cider vinegar works good, but I never thought to try gargling brine. I’m gonna have to try that out, I’d imagine it would have to be just as effective as apple cider vinegar, thanks for sharing! 👍🏼

  12. Gerd ruined my vocal chords in 2008, I was on meds for years now I take three apple cider vinegar tablets morning and night and have NEVER had gerd since, thank you Dr. Berg

    • @Zoe It has improved,
intermittent fasting is the solution for me because eating agreveates my vocal chords, if I do eat I I feel the need to clear my throat every 10 seconds for around 30 mins but that can last Longer, this leaves me exhausted and irritated, I have a four hour eating window from 7pm to 11pm, in this window I do not make phonecalls or socialise, I’m so happy how the apple cider vinegar tablets have completely stopped my acid reflux/gerd

    • @Michael Mashup I have had a problem with STOMACH mucus for 9 years. I have had EVERYTHING examined and although the digestive doctors think that phlegm coming up from the stomach sounds like science fiction (they are used to the acid burning issue), the truth is that it is something that happens to thousands of people.

In my case, it is also guaranteed that it does not come from anywhere else, as I have had x-rays of my sinuses and lungs and everything is clean.

You take apple cider vinegar. I have it here and it is also ecological and of very good quality but… have you really got better? I’ve tried it but it doesn’t agree with me so I take lemon. Everything you tell me is appreciated and forgive me if there are any spelling mistakes. I am writing to you from Spain and although I speak English I find it less difficult to write using a translator.

So you only eat between those hours and you don’t eat any more all day? Thank you

    • @Zoe My gerd has completely gone the apple cider vinegars tablets are the only option for me even as a vinegar lover I find it repulsive, I cannot drink it first thing in the morning and would forget to take it in the evening, the four hour eating window is perfect for me feeling energised and focused through the day, I follow Dr bergs plan and have lost 9 stone/126 pounds

  13. I have a variation of Barrett’s syndrome which is the complete lack of a esophageal flap due to a birth defect’ presumably. I was prescribed omeprazole and have been taking that for over 5 years until I started to do apple cider vinegar before meals which has pretty much replaced all antacids. I do have reflux moments where I eat too late at night the wrong thing and not properly elevate during sleep but it is a wonderful replacement.

    • You are a prime candidate for one meal a day and daily intermittent fasting. I use ACV daily like an hour before the meal

  14. I quit cow milk 8 years ago and I notice a significant reduction in my mucous production. Well said Dr Berg.

    • @Arnaud Jean i almost only eat raw milk cheese…gruyere, brie, camambert roquefort…or organic chedder. Loads of homemade kefir too. I never seem to get sick or have even mild colds. Whether that is anything to do with those foods? Good gut flora is important.

    • @Naturallin unfortunately there are so many things ancient civilizations across the world knew which we have no means of finding out how they knew or found out in the first place. We are probably the least technologically advanced generations.

    • @Naturallin
      Probably trial and error.
Make a Christmas Wreath out of Poison Ivy one time and you’ll never do it again.

  17. Thankyou Dr.Berg! You must be assured that there are thousands of people who benefit from your advice and here in Britain, our health system is crumbling and it is increasingly difficult to see a doctor face to face so your videos are invaluable!

  18. Great video ! Actually, being a vocal coach, I have noticed that pressing some points behind of our neck , it really helps to get recovered from the sore throat.. I always say to my students to massage that part of the neck before singing and, in general , few times a day when / if we don’t feel well … Happy to hear this kind advice from such an amazing doctor as you are !!🙏🙏🙏🔝🔝🔝👏👏👏
