There is a myth that calcium is the main mineral you need for osteoporosis and to strengthen your bones.
The majority of what makes up bone is collagen, which is protein. There is calcium in your bones, but it’s tied up with phosphorus.
In some interesting studies, they found that taking calcium doesn’t prevent bone fractures. There is also strong evidence that taking a calcium supplement can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.
It’s essential to get enough vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals in your diet. The most important vitamins for bone health are vitamin D and vitamin K2.
Another factor in your bone health is your hormones. For example, a deficiency in estrogen or high cortisol can lead to osteoporosis.
Bone loss isn’t contributed to one thing. Overall, to build bone, you need to focus on creating a healthy body.
The best source of calcium to help strengthen the bones is dairy. But, a combination of plants and dairy is great for supporting healthy calcium levels.
Signs and symptoms of a calcium deficiency:
• Muscle spasms
• Tetany
• Changes in heart rate
• Numbness around the mouth
• Numbness in the fingertips and feet
• Spasm in the larynx (hoarseness, rough-sounding voice, a lump in the throat)
• Consuming excessive amounts of protein, sodium, coffee, soft drinks, and refined sugar
Calcium is needed for your health, but it may be best to get it from food. One of the biggest health benefits of calcium is that it may help prevent certain intestinal cancers. Keep in mind that you need plenty of vitamin D and magnesium to absorb calcium.

On the subject of Osteoporosis:
There’s also the interruption of the hydroxyapatite crystalline lattice in bones by the introduction of Fluorine ions (from “fluoride” or “fluorine-containing” chemicals). Fluorapatite has a differently-sized structure, so can cause porous bones where it displaces Calcium-based apatite. It’s like building a brick house with differently-sized bricks – the core structure will be irregular, less strong, and have holes/cavities in its structure.
So, when doctors give patients fluoride tablets to treat osteoporosis, to apparently “strengthen bones”, they’re doing a disservice to the patient.
@BigBlueDog810 right. I live three miles from a superfund site, and I have a well. I have never tested the water except with my Zero water thing, and it reads over 350 whatever. But when I lived in an apartment in my city, I was constantly sick. The water was gross.
Dentists as well. Fluoride I rat poison. 😒
@lyn gruen people think I am strange for refusing to drink bottled water.
It’s added everywhere, unfortunately 💧city water supply, toothpaste, mouthwash, salt, milk & I heard animal feed has it also. The best thing to do is live off the land if you can. Dig a well, raise your own meat, grow your own fruits/veggies & make your own soap 🧼 😉
@my 😆 I have my own well. I raise milk goats and chickens.
I don’t think there is fluoride in their grain. I make my own soap! I raise my own pain killing wild lettuce.
My brother nearby has huge gardens, he has a greenhouse he built by hand. He built a sawmill and mills his own lumber. Otherwise, we are just like anybody else.
Dr Berg, you just solved my issue of my tingling in my lips. I was on the right track but now I understand. Thank you so much.🥲♥️😁
Great to hear this Dr Berg, I was concerned about too much Calcium vitamins on their own could create excess calcium in the arteries.
Exactly correct.
Multivitamins are awful and yes too much calcium not enough potassium, magnesium
@TinaMfam Depends on which multi. Choose an organically prepared one, read the labels and compare. Shaklee is good.
Years ago I read a book called Fit For Life and learned that calcium needs zinc and magnesium. Added potassium to it as well.
My favorite cookbook although I’m not vegetarian 🙂
@CuriousCat I have the cookbook and the book. I still use it for vegetable dishes.
You are the best doctor of all time 😉
I watched your video and now I completed avoiding sugar and the result is awsm man💓💖
Pretty good but you missed a key point. Countries that have high boron content in their soil/water have almost no osteoporosis. Israel citizens daily intake is estimated at 10 to 20mg and Turkey is higher. The parathyroid controls calcium tightly in the blood. It removes calcium from the bones to maintain balance with PTH and the thyroid can signal for bones to reabsorb. Boron is to the parathyroid as iodine/iodide is to the thyroid. Check out Dr Jorge Flechas YouTube on iodine body sufficiency and boron.

Boron/Iodine ✔️
Thank you ⚜️
You can have the right nutrition but fail if you’re not active. Lack of enough weight-bearing activity on the long bones causes mobilization of calcium from the bones. A sedentary lifestyle increases this risk. This is also a common complication of prolonged bedrest, further resulting in kidney stones in bedbound people.
@stuarthutt3740, Thanks for mentioning Boron! It definitely helps the bones and helps tooth enamel stay strong. There are so many “trace” minerals that are vital to our health that US doctors don’t know about .
Dr. Berg this is great info! But I have a question: I am ALWAYS tired during the day but “wake up” in the evening around 6:30 or so. Why is this!? And when I’m on keto it’s closer to 5 or 5:30. Some of my family and friends deal with the same issue so I know I’m not alone. Ive been dealing with this for years. Please help!!
Are you following strict keto? For how long? Do you eat a lot of carbs in the evening? Are you getting enough fat in your diet? Are you doing intermittent fasting? If you’re fairly new to eating healthy it might take months or even a year to nourish your body and resolve specific health issues. I’m no expert myself but I’ve been watching Dr. Berg and many other keto experts who address this issue so just keep on searching – you’ll find the answer. Very few of the successful Youtubers answer personal questions (thousands and thousands of questions per video make it humanly impossible).
You are such a blessing to many Dr Berg Thank you for all your education videos on healthy body systems God Bless you and your family 🙏😀
I got my mum onto D3 combined with K2 and unfortunately she fell and broke her hip in December. However, the surgeon said that her bones were quite strong, making the resulting surgery a resounding success. I’m of the belief that the D3 K2 played a major part in her healing. She’s almost 75 by the way and also takes magnesium each day.
@CuriousCat you’re right. She’d been taking the D3 K2 for a year and magnesium for three months prior to her fall.
@Robert C Lynch I didn’t compliment you before for getting mom to take the supplements. Especially during covid. It’s often hard to get elderly people to change. I used to be a nursing home director and our residents would not eat the mixed baby green salads we offered. They thought the lettuce was spoiled compared to the iceberg they were used to 🙂
@CuriousCat Thank you for your kind words. I’ve also got my dad on the K2 and D3 and he’s 80 in July of this year.
The pandemic was extremely difficult and as my mum has a lung condition, I was very worried about her catching it…especially when the NHS was at breaking point. But I learned from a video about D3 that it reduces your chances of a chest infection by 50 percent and your chances of pneumonia reduce by 70 percent…just 1000iu per day and we take 4000.
I tip my hat in your direction, for caring for the elderly.
Great information 👍 thanks for sharing sir 👍 🙏 appreciate
@Robert C Lynch k
I’m glad you are reinforcing past lessons and adding to. Last time around it was K2. D3 + K2 where the K2 be preferably menaquinone 7. But any K2 is better than nothing as it takes the calcium from the blood stream and puts it back into the bones.
I will forsure try this k2 i use d3 only. I have osteoporosis
Wow, you are doing divine work doctor Berg. I was super skinny my whole life. I started working out and gained so much lean mass in such a short period of time that most people don’t believe me. My post workout smoothie was a blueberry, marine collagen smoothie. I’d take a leucine and tryptophan supplement post workout as well. I was eating a pescatarian keto diet. I only ate blueberries in my smoothie post workout because I worked out fasted, so the fructose in the blueberries is used to replenish resources instead of kicking me out of ketosis.
My ex fianceé had a bone wasting disease that came from a tumor that somehow inhibited the hormones that signal the osteoclasts to build new bone. At the time (2002 or so) there were only about 15 cases documented in medical literature. Another complications was that the tumors were non site specific – i.e. they could be found in different parts of the body. That made it hard to pin down. She eventually recovered but I think that may have been from going back to Korea and eating kimchi every day.
I know that K2 in supplement form is either Mk4 or Mk7 but know K2 comes in all single digit spectrum. I wonder what authentic well made kimchi is. Can someone explain?
My mother takes a calcium/collagen supplement every day and now her bone density tests come in very good!
We have it in our minds because that is what our doctors have told us for a long time. I had osteopenia about a decade ago, so my doctor put me on calcium. Through my own research, I found out that was wrong.
I just love Dr. Berg! I find all his videos so helpful! I’m doing keto because of him and lost 30 lbs. And I’m satisified, no sugar cravings. God bless you, Dr. Berg!
I had so many doubts, questions, about osteoporosis. Today I have got correct answers. Thank you so much dr.berg for this very useful information .
Most welcome! Glad you found it helpful
My grandmom and aunt used to feed us ghee saying it’s good for bones. Apparently, ghee is rich in vitamin k2. Thanks for this great information Dr. Berg!
