Erythritol gives me horrible gastric distress. I avoid it. I prefer Monk fruit. It’s difficult to find Monk fruit that does not contain a mixture of erythritol, but I found some! It was worth looking for.

Erithrytol, Xylitol and Sorbitol and other -ol are sugar alcohol. Meaning they are created using hydrogenation similar to how margarine (transfat) is made. The process require a substrate, hydrogen source and heavy metal catalyst (typically nickel). Some of the chemical used are potentially toxic to the body, such as aldehyde, so the question is how much residue are found in the final product. Sugar alcohol are also usually made from gmo corn. The other issue is that you can’t digest it fully, which can be disruptive to the gut microbes, there needs to be more research on this, there is one study claiming it increase certain microbes but it was very reductionist not reliable to believe it is beneficial, common sense is suggesting it’s the opposite with the amount of anecdote of stomach upset and gastric issues, foods beneficial for gut doesn’t usually result in the body rejecting it through diarrhea.
Yes it is safe, erithrytol is GRAS status according to the FDA, no requirement for longterm safety studies. Never said it is deadly but doesn’t mean it’s is benign for everyone. I get increases heart rate from eating erythritol and lasting for half a day, I found it was effective in killing ants and a study suggests mosquitoes and fruit flies as well, so it has some use.

The main author of the study is a consultant to Procter and Gamble. How can you trust any research scientist who doesn’t find any problem consulting these kind of companies.

It seems to cause less gastric issues for people compared to sugar alcohol at least. Some people are concerned about the very refined liquid version, but if you want to stay natural you can opt for the leaf version as long as there is no added sweeteners of other kinds. It’s actually easy to grow particularly warmer climate, only problem is it’s hard to find starter plants and it is hard to germinate from seeds also very expensive.
