  2. Can you do a video on glutamate and GABA. Also when the brain doesn’t get enough insulin to down regulate glutamate.

  3. M-TOR is one of the most common claims by the vegans that animal foods should not be eaten. But they eat lots of carbs like it meant nothing..

    • @Draziell Actually, by inhibiting MTOR in aging, it’s likely you could reduce the risk of sarcopenia.

In aging mice, inhibiting MTORC 1 protected muscle mass in several studies (through calorie restriction and / or rapamycin). So theoretically, it’s possible that inhibiting MTORC1 could be beneficial to muscle gains in aging humans.

You can see in the study below that the researchers were surprised that by inhibiting MTOR muscle mass was increased in aging Rats. This is the reverse of what the researchers expected

“We found mTORC1 (mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1), a well-established positive modulator of muscle mass, to be surprisingly hyperactivated in sarcopenic muscle. Furthermore, partial inhibition of the mTORC1 pathway counteracted sarcopenia, as determined by observing an increase in muscle mass and fiber type cross-sectional area in select muscle groups, again surprising because mTORC1 signaling has been shown to be required for skeletal muscle mass gains in some models of hypertrophy.”

Joseph GA, Wang SX, Jacobs CE, Zhou W, Kimble GC, Tse HW, Eash JK, Shavlakadze T, Glass DJ. Partial Inhibition of mTORC1 in Aged Rats Counteracts the Decline in Muscle Mass and Reverses Molecular Signaling Associated with Sarcopenia. Mol Cell Biol. 2019 Sep 11

As mentioned earlier, the above study is not the only study where this has happened.

“In calorie-restricted mice treated with rapamycin, the beneficial effects were therefore additive, with mice displaying significantly better muscle function than mice receiving either treatment alone. The positive impact of calorie-restricted diets and rapamycin on muscle aging leads to the intriguing question of whether elderly people suffering from sarcopenia can profit from a combined therapy consisting of an mTORC1 inhibitor, a calorie restriction-mimicking drug, and perhaps exercise.”

Of course, resistance training is important for reducing the risk of sarcopenia.

    • I don’t think that lots of whole food, unrefined carbs are a problem for most people. Such foods are correlated with both a reduction in disease and mortality. Processed carbs are a problem.

    • @jack buaer hey Jack. First I would like to say that 24 was one of my favorites TV series of all time… Hard to believe that at that time we had good TV series with 24 episodes per season. Anyways, I agree with you that CHRONIC activation of mTOR1 causes something similar to insulin resistence and Leptin resistence… If you have to much leptin, you have the exact reverse effect… Same thing with mTOR, if you activated it too much, you become resistant and can lose muscle. But if you have a chronic underactivated mTOR, you will for sure become sarcopenic. It’s always important to balance things out.

    • @Draziell Yep, I had to change the spelling because there were too many Jack Bauers. I am probably the only Jack Buaer. LOL. Inhibiting MTOR may be more important as we age. There were some Rapamycin / Exercise trials (at least two) that were trying to get off the ground in aging humans.
I am sure we will eventually get the answers here.

I don’t think scientists have a good understanding of MTOR in aging yet. I suspect that inhibition and promotion strategies combined would produce the best result and would not cancel each other out. Here is my thinking:

There are correlations with foods (e.g. polyphenols) and substances (e.g., glucosamine) that inhibit MTOR with increased healthspan and reductions in mortality. So it might make sense to incorporate food and practices that inhibit MTOR that are linked to greater healthspan and lifespan.

At the same time, Resistance training and sauna promote MTOR and are also correlated with increased healthspan and reductions in mortality, so those would be ways I would use to promote MTOR.

So for the time being I will be promoting and inhibiting MTOR daily with the two approaches above. My guide is whether an activity or practice is associated with increased healthspan or lifespan, and not whether it increases or decreases MTOR. Anyway, that’s the approach I am taking and it’s my best guess.

  4. Anyone know if taking 10g of glycine during your weightlifting session has any benefits since it activates mtor?

  5. i have had skin rash for 2 months now(eczema/psoriasis) wondering about 5 day fast/with weight traing to maintain muscle

  6. What is a high blood sugar. If it stays sugar stays up then it is dangerous, but where should the blood sugar should be after one, two, three ours?

  7. Why do you choose glycine as ap posed to TMG? Aren’t they basically the same? TMG better at lower homocysteine?
