    • a lower average life expectancy just means that more men die at younger age. besides wars more men work in risky jobs, construction workers, firefighters etc., their hobby activities are often more risky and they tend to take more drugs. if a man survives these critical times without permanent injuries, chronic disease or drug abuse, he might also reach a very high age. at the age of 70 y the ratio women: men is about 60:40 ( austria, where i live). so you can easily see that more women survive critical ages and that is the reason why you see more elderly women than men.

  3. I wonder, for me, if swimming is a better alternative than running to increase vo2 because I suffered an injury on my feet and I also have flat feet.

  4. Surpised that there is no “upper limit” as I heard that old marathon runners dont tend to live particularly long. I thought there was a sweet spot of being fit without being overtrained.

    • It may be because high level marathon runners got injured or ill in their 30s or 40s and actually ended up with lower cardiorespiratory fitness at the time of the measurement. That study took a bunch of 60 year old people with different level of cardiorespiratory fitness, but it doesn’t say what they did during their 60 first years of life. It just measured how likely they were going to die during the next decade.

    • @Xavier Debaix as I recall, hours of long distance running had caused scarring of the heart muscle. I operate on the idea that the amount of exercise a healthy person feels like is about right. I know I feel good with 3x gym per week, 45 minutes per session, and other casual activity. When I’ve gone for 6-7x, I gradually got run down.

  5. Ok but are we just committing the same fallacy as thinking that increasing grip strength will increase longevity? Could it just be the case that VO2 max is a marker for overall health, but not necessarily causal for longevity? ie: Only those who are very healthy can reach attain high VO2 max. Healthy User bias and such.

    • You can be healthy but with poor VO2 max and working on increasing your VO2 max which does include a lot of exercise improves your health

    • @Siim Land I mean there’s no doubt that cardiovascular exercise improves health. But when it comes to VO2 max specifically, the question is whether an already health/fit person gets much added benefit from the particular kind of training necessary to increase VO2 max.

      Stage 2 cardio will increase it a moderate amount for the cardio-uninitiated, but really the way to increase VO2 max is with intense intervals, sprints, or other “all out” styles of cardio.

      I’m wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze, or if someone already doing stage 2 cardio really gets all that much longevity benefit from trying to make themselves puke on a peleton 2-3x per week.

  7. This has been debated for ages, pro athletes don´t live longer but one can certainly cherry pick the data.

  8. The studies do not justify zone 2. They justify HIIT because it is about increasing VO2 max, Zone 2 does not increase anything. Therefore I amk planning on HIIT on a rowing machine.
