Today we're going to talk about a type of vitamin B12 I would avoid: cyanocobalamin.

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic version of vitamin B12. It's a very cheap version, and it's hiding in many fortified grain foods, synthetic vitamins, energy drinks, B12 injections, and even infant formulas. It's also typically present in very high doses in these products.

The problem is that there is a cyanide molecule attached to the cobalamin. Cyanide shuts down the oxygen to your mitochondria.

Potential side effects of cyanocobalamin:
• Vomiting
• Stomach problems
• Low potassium
• Headaches
• Fever
• Dizziness

It's true that the liver can detoxify small amounts of cyanide. But what if someone consumes large amounts of products containing this synthetic B12?

Some people also have problems with their detoxification genes that could cause them to have trouble getting rid of cyanide. Another common genetic problem with methylation can cause the effects of synthetic vitamin B12 to be worse.

The best form of vitamin B12 is the natural version called methylcobalamin. This version is the active form of vitamin B12 and stays in the body longer than the synthetic versions.

Potential benefits of methylcobalamin:
• It may help improve sleep
• It can decrease the need for sleep
• It can help you wake up feeling alert and refreshed
• It can help you fall asleep faster
• It's great for the nervous system (especially the myelin sheath)
• It supports healthy eyes
• It increases melatonin
• It decreases homocysteine
• It can help regulate cortisol
• It supports the red blood cells

Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency:
• Not consuming foods high in vitamin B12
• Stomach inflammation
• H. pylori
• Low stomach acid
• Gastric bypass
• Inflammation in the intestines

  1. I mostly eat vegetarian but I eat fatty fish only (sardines, anchovies and salmon). I eat seafood for my B12 and added beef liver for the B12.

    • Julie ~I do agree with you in staying away from eating BEEF because of too high saturated fat content, fed GMO corn, antibiotics, and growth hormone steroids. “BUT” I strongly recommend, if you can get farmed organic or especially wild bush meat like Mule Deer is better eating than Whitetail Deer, Fallow or Red Deer, Caribou, Moose (I was raised with this), Bison (Buffalo), and/or ELK. These meats are much more healthier than BEEF, with very low saturated fat (about 10% of BEEF) and organic with no chemicals added to the meat like growth hormone steroids, etc. Also another thing to consider is organic Goat meat, organic Lamb is good but a higher saturated fat content.
~Also of course when eating >>any “meat” products of any kind<< including BEEF or Calf liver. “Always” drink a hot drink (coffee, tea, bone or vegetable broth, even hot water) along with it at the same time is very important, never ever drink a cold drink when eating meat.

    • @Roy Johnson
Very interesting Roy. Thanks for all the information.
And I had no idea about ‘hot’ beverages when consuming meat. & again thank you very much ! I trust your word ♥️

  2. Just when some people think they are eating healthily, Dr Berg gives them another reality check 👍🏿

  3. Good morning Dr Berg and all who watch your videos. Dr Berg you are a gem a limited edition, when you school us on our health…. May God bless you and your family…a true fan from New York!!

    • @Dr. Eric Berg DC The irony of clicking this video today, I just ordered Methylene Blue & it arrives today – I had also watched one of your videos covering it this past week as I was gathering information. I’m starting very slow 1 drop a day and slowly moving up if there’s no reactions. Thanks for your info on it.
(The multi I take uses Methylcob. ) 👍🏼

  4. Good morning Dr Berg.fantastic topic.I am really confused with B 12 , lucky you updated it.Have a good weekend dr Berg and your family

  5. Off topic: could you give an estimate on how much folate is in your cruciferous supplement? Per tablet?

  6. Thanks Doc, I worry about my liver bc I lost a few friends to liver troubles. I checked my b-complex and it does have the cheaper B12 version. I’m tossing it in the trash today. I like water, so I never drank that colored sugar water that the conglomerates push on us. I also stopped oats and cereals and switched back to mostly just bacon and eggs. I’ve lost some weight by doing this.

  7. Sad that he didn’t mention that about ten percent of people are prone to _OVERMETHYLATION,_ and so taking large amounts of Methylcobalamin can lead to mental instability. I was taking large doses of it to help with my MS, but that ended up causing me to become cyclothymic (like a lighter version of Bipolar) until I realized what was happening.

  8. You saved my life with all this usefull info. Never been in doctors office after started watching and learning from you. Very appreciated, God bless you!

  9. Thank you Dr Berg! Are you still doing the video on how stress can cause good bacteria in your gut to turn pathogenic and what we can do to help? Thank you in advance 👍🏽

  10. I am very thankful for having doctor Berg in this world. My health and my lifestyle has changed so much after I started watching his videos.

  11. I been taking this Synthetic B12 (Cyanocobalamin) for years. And experiencing tingling and symptoms mentioned. Thank you Dr. Berg!

  12. Very cool info! Was curious of the REAL Reason you seemed to discourage Cyanocobalamin shots. Now we know. Yeah less Cyanide sounds better. The interaction between B12 and potassium you mention is interesting too. Thanks for explaining things few others talk about.

  13. I’ve known this for decades which is why I’ve always chosen quality water in glass bottles over many vitamin drinks, fortified juices, etc. There are other vitamins (ie Vit C as citric acid from gmo corn, folic acid instead of folate, others we still don’t know about yet) that aren’t in their most nontoxic or useful forms added to many supplements and “foods” also. That’s why my health drastically improved after eating the cleanest and most nutrient dense whole foods I can possibly source, stopping supplement pills/powders (this space isn’t regulated and I’m personally not impressed with the items that are anyway) and using quantum upgrade and a rife machine only when needed. We’re all unique so this is just what I found to be optimal for me. Actually, my quantum upgrade subscription was a game changer.

  14. Thanks Dr EB! QUESTION; Is there a significant difference or benefit between Adenosylcobalamin and Methylcobalamin? Is it just better to use B12 with L-5-MTHFR regardless of one’s gene state?

  15. Thank you Dr Berg for this great information! I’ve had digestive issues for many years. I’ll be taking B-12 with Methylcobalamin. I hope this will help. 👍🏼😊

  16. Thanks so much Dr Berg for your great knowledge in health. I love your teachings and you’ve been a blessing to me and my family. I would like to learn about Scoliosis disease. God bless you !
