Today I want to share some interesting benefits of glucosamine that go way beyond support for osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine is an amino sugar. It’s a combination of glucose and glutamine, which is an amino acid.
Glucosamine is a precursor for cartilage and has been known to cushion and lubricate the joints. It can also help prevent the breakdown of your joints and maintain your cartilage. It’s especially important for athletes who put a lot of stress on their joints.
Other potential benefits of glucosamine:
• It supports wound healing
• It’s anti-inflammatory
• It may help reduce pain
• It may help improve varicose veins
• Some studies show it can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes
• There is research on glucosamine improving longevity
• It may help with inflammatory gut conditions
• It may help increase heparin
• It may help reduce edema and swelling
• It may help with vascular migraines and cluster headaches
• It may help with dysfunction in the blood-brain barrier
• Some data suggests it could be good for seizures (other data suggests that large amounts could increase seizures)
The amount of glucosamine you may want to consider would be between 500 to 1,000 mg three times per day. A certain version of glucosamine called glucosamine hydrochloride should be avoided.

at about 38 years old I was in pain every day – my knees even hurt sitting down
ever since I stated this supplement – I’m 100% pain free and can even play in the trampoline with my kids..
sounds crazy, but this is my first hand experience – life changing
That’s great. Thanks for sharing your experience. Stay safe and healthy!
It did not help with my knees at all, but on the other hand my dad who forgets his heart medicine takes it religiously after I gave him the bottle to see if it would help with his shoulder. He had all sort of wear and tear injuries on his shoulder, apparently it helps immensely. For some people and some injuries it’s a great supplement.
are you taking glucosamine sulfate or hcl? how much a day?
Can you share what one you take there’s so many out there..please..
Wow! That’s great.
Thanks for this video Dr. Berg! I was avoiding this supplement because it has gluco- in its name so I thought it’s another form of sugar 😂 being a Greek speaker I tend to make such judgements
i was taking it for years. my sugar test came back high. i stopped it & it went down. im going back on
@lovly 2cu oh so it does affect blood sugars! Are you doing keto and IF?
It is AMAZING ❤ how you made this video!! I had just brought a bottle of Glucosamine, read the research on the studies done and stopped taking it, ONLY GOD allowed you to make this video for me and others that needed this INFORMATION, Many THANKS Dr. Berg! Appreciate You very much 🥰❤ now I’m taking it again.
Thanks for posting. I had the same experience. I’ll start taking it again.
Since 2019, I have woken up in the morning with pain in my spine. At the point where the vertebral column joins the sternum and the ribs. In the back. I went to a doctor in 2023 and he told me: Take this glycosamine-chondroitin supplement ( Faran Donaflex ) for a month and come and tell me that you are pain-free in one month. In 15 days all the pains were gone. I am 39 years old. ✅
Wow
How many vits sup. Do we have to take a day geshhh. Gluc..b12…vd3…fishoil..magnes… we’re talking 5or 6 pills everyy day. Is this good for our liver over time. 😢😢😢
@Lilly in the Field About glycosamine and chondroitin u take this supplement for 1 month and u r ok… I believe I will take one box of 30 sachets ( 10 euros ) every 6 months for maintenance. You can ask your doctor.
This doesn’t/hasn’t worked for many people including myself over the years for stiffness/joints/ligaments/cartilage/pain.
Here, it is being talked about for other reasons.
Thats great! It has to be the glucosanine that helped you, because the chondroitin cannot be broken down in the gut, when when it’s taken orally. Chondroitin must be injected into the actual joint / area, in order to be affective.
The supplement form is derived from shellfish and less bioavailable compared to the joints of smaller land animals like chickens. Eat whole chickens that have been slow-cooked for a long time so you get the benefits of connective tissues, glucosamine and collagen. If you want good knees in old age you need to be eating this now not when you become frail. The same applies to dog breeds that suffer joint problem fed on canned jelly and biscuits. Healthy dogs eat BARF.
Barf?
Glucosamine never did anything for my arthritis or joint inflammation! However, taking omega 3 oil and collagen definetly have been doing a lot!
I don’t have missing cartilage yet but I just did an MRI and it showed minor labrum tears in both hips and left shoulder. What can I take to repair those?
@Am HadI’m 40. I’ve only played sports for recreation (when I was in my teens)and never substained any serious injuries from it. I’ve worked but nothing really excruciating or backbreaking. I used to smoke but have been off two years now. Haven’t had a drink in a year. Diet is 80 percent plant based and 10 percent meat. But here I am with shoulder and hip issues. I just want to know how or if I can reverse the course before it leads to full blown osteoarthritis?
I have The same appraisal as you with regards to arthritis and inflammation.. .it does not help me at all.. Going to bed at night is The worst I can do for my back pains and stiffness. .
Every Video your posting is a topic that I enjoy and get my questions answered. Thank you, Dr. Berg
Is there an upper limit to how many supplements a person should be on? All your recommendations sound great, but there are dozens of them. I could eat capsules all day listening to you!
Yes not sure how much can we take?
I have been taking mass quantities of supplements for years. I go by the rule of asking myself if I can get the benefit of supplements by eating them as food rather than taking a pill. I have used good judgment by listening to my body and mind when asking what supplement am I over taking. You can trust your own judgement because you know your body more than anyone else.
Thank you Dr. Berg for this video and all your other videos. Much appreciated ✅
I walk 13 Or miles a day as a mail delivery carrier. Amazing because so many of my other issues like memory and gut. I started taking it for knee protection but it helped my foot pain. I however took several blends and didn’t notice a real difference until I took the Puritans Pride brand.
Excuse me Dr. Berg but is glucosamine naturally available in food? Or do I have to rely on supplements for it?
Eat whole chickens that have been cooked for a long time at a low heat, munch on the bones and joints.
I’ve been taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin for over 20 years. Former athlete and after having knee surgery this was suggested to me by my doctor, who was a former physician for a NFL team.
He told me I would have to take it for the rest of my life because my knees were in such bad shape. I ask what was the long term effects and he said your body produces it so I would be fine. So yes still taking it and when I go off if my knee pain comes back!!
Thanks Dr.Berg
I went on a 5 day fast so stopped taking all supplements (been taking Frame Essentials for 16 years) & my knees started hurting after 24 hours but by the 3rd day of fasting all pain went away. Not sure if autophogy was taking place to heal my knees, but it was pretty cool. I thought there was no way I could live without the glucosamine. I still take them when I’m not fasting but I wonder if I could heal permanently after doing more 5 day fasts.
@J Ccontinue fasting with no sugar, carbs and starchy foods..
@J C, when we fast, the cytokines that cause the inflammation go way down. I have been fasting for years, but unfortunately the pain eventually comes back when not fasting.
Good morning Dr Berg 😊 each day we learn something new from you 🌸
Thank you so much Dr ,Berg, in our country Dr’s simply prescribe meds ,they dont inform the patient about supplements or food. I shall start taking it now
they arent trained to
Dr. Berg, I am allergic to sulpha, so I have stayed away from sulfates or sulfites, what other glucosamine mixtures would be okay for me to take so that I don’t get hives? And why is chondroitin, which is often paired with glucosamine, used for?
Try pycnogenol 🙏🏿
hi, i got hives. i did remove sugar starchy and carbs on my food for a month and drink VCO every morning on an emty stomach for a week..hives become smaller and disapper itself. hope it will help on u too
Thanks Dr Berg! Years back I was working for a surveyor… laid off for 6 months… went to go back to work and my knees hurt so bad!!!! I started taking glucosamine and within 2 weeks they felt like they were padded… and I was moving well in the field again.
More recently I had dropped taking it in the interest of all the supplements… lol… but I think I’ll add it back in again… excellent stuff! Shared, of course… cheers! ✅
Dr Berg, I love your videos and I am picking many tips to help with my fibromyalgia condition, but I haven’t seen any video where you advice specifically on it, I hope one day you will do one so we can create a little self with all the best supplements.
Best regards from Spain.
My doctor just prescribed me Glucosamine Synergy from Standard Process for my severe arthritis. Good to know what you have to say about it.
Been taking that daily for about 5 years now. I’m 43 and can play the bass guitar again with no trouble. In my late 30s I couldn’t play without joint pain.
I was hoping u would tell us what whole food it’s derived from. The only supplements I’ll take are D3+K2 combo. I used to take a supplement for this and that, and had more problems than it was worth. Now I eat whole foods only, including 2 scrambled eggs every day. Since I started this change last Sept. my back and joint issues are at a minimum. By the way I’m 69. (I refuse to take any pill with that hard plastic as shown in the video)
I’ve been using it for years for back and knee pain. Absolutely works. Have no pain at all
