Let’s talk about the best way to extend your life. The #1 cause of death worldwide is heart disease.

If we look at risk factors for heart disease, high LDL increases your risk by 38 percent. But insulin resistance increases your risk by 540 percent.

Other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension, can be caused by insulin resistance. This seems to mean that insulin resistance is the biggest risk factor for premature cardiac death.

The most popular mainstream treatment for high cholesterol is statin drugs. Studies have shown that statins can potentially lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.

Healthy mitochondria are essential to longevity. Statins may also impair the mitochondria and increase apoptosis (death of the mitochondria).

An interesting study links higher LDL cholesterol to inversely affecting mortality. This means that having higher LDL may help extend your lifespan. Cholesterol is involved in a myriad of functions in the body—it’s essential for a healthy life.

Blood thinners and even the heart-healthy diet recommended by the American Heart Association can also contribute to insulin resistance and high blood sugar.

To live longer, improving insulin resistance, making insulin more sensitive, and stabilizing your blood sugar is crucial.

The most important things you can do to support healthy insulin and blood sugar include:
1. Getting on a low-carb diet (the ketogenic diet)
2. Doing intermittent fasting
3. Not restricting cholesterol
4. Consuming vegetables
5. Exercising

  1. I have cut sugar completely and have been drinking Heapwell ceremonial matcha along with my 18/6 intermittent fasting. Results have been simply amazing. Never felt so lighter and lean.

    • Absolutely correct. My mom is 76 and developed a severe histamine intolerance so she started IF and doing longer fasts (3-4 days) along with going full clean keto (when she does eat, LOL). Over the last 6 months she’s lost 40 lbs and looks 15 years younger (slim, trim, building muscle from the HGH and stem cells, tighter skin, fewer age spots). She’s aging in reverse and she started at at 76. I’m 51 and doing the same regimen for the same condition (which I’ve healed, actually). I would guess me to be 40ish and I feel better than ever.

  2. “Old age is a privilege.” This was a sign in my family doctor’s office when I was a kid in the 1960s. He still made house calls even in 1975. Those were the days.

    • I think they do housecalls some places in Europe still. But the world of medicen have been captured nowadays clearly.

    • @peter pede a few doctors make house visits in rural WV as well. They don’t work for big corporate health care associations like 95% of doctors do today…. It’s tough being independent these days.

    • My uncle was a doctor from the old school and did house calls and even accepted chicken, ducks and goats for payment from the financially challenged. He was also all about nutritional health. Doctors like that do not exist today.

    • @Paul Howe Seems almost religius, their dedication.. Massive respect, to those that go that extra mile

    • @KT I havent met any, but there are still some everywhere. But its a culture id like to see grow, instead of the rainbows

  3. Love yourself everyday, even at your lowest point. So many doors open for you when you love yourself. Much love to everyone here. ❤

  4. Thanks for the tips Dr Berg 🌸 I’m sure that you and your channel will still be around by the time as we all advance in age 😊 to give us the right advices as you always did.

  5. I’m 55 years old, and I haven’t had sugar or carbs in 16 months. I only have your healthy keto plan. I intermittent fast between 20 and 24 hours every day. My energy level hasn’t been this energetic in a very long time. There’s more to life than just stuffing our jaws with junk food. I wish I had known this year’s ago. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!!!

    • Some do better on keto diet than others. I crash and have no energy whatsoever on diets like the Atkins or South Beach. Brain fog, lethargy, etc. My body needs fruits, along with veggies including some unprocessed honey. Along with fish, some eggs (my body reacts to yolk unfortunately), some chicken. I eat very little hamburger, steaks (just not my favorite). I dont like pork. I am allergic to wheat. And I rarely eat grains unless I have a craving for cooked oatmeal which is rare. Yes I enjoy an occasional treat like a gluten free cookie. But I stick mostly to a whole foods diet.

    • Exactly 💯 I don’t even think there’s a such thing as physical aging TBH. What people refer to as that is usually just “physical deterioration” of the body that can in fact be reversed by increasing collagen, blood flow, oxygen, vitamins, etc. The phrase “Age ain’t nothing but a number” is really not as hyperbolic as most people think……

    • My grand grandparents ate whatever they wanted and they died almost a 100 years old. The problem is not sugar or protein or cholesterol. The problem is the processed food junk food and drinks and overeating.

  6. Dr Berg, you are literally God send. Thank you so much for your contribution to mankind. 🙏🏾

    • He is a good person may ALLAH bless him with bests of all worlds and forgive all our sins and flaws and protect us all from all evils and harms . There is no God except Allah.

  7. I’ve been low carb, low sugar for well over 50 years. I’m healthy and slender . I do have to say I’ve never been adverse to the occasional slice of toast, serving of rice, croissants or low sugar ice cream I make. I also love berries.

My point is … carbs and sugar are like alcohol to me … moderation.

Speaking of alcohol. I have read that over-consumption can cause high cholesterol levels regardless of eating clean and exercising.

  8. Dr. Berg, I’m not sure if you’re allowed to discuss this topic on YouTube, but I think the fact that our food supply is being poisoned by mandatory injections (mRNA injections incoming and in some cases already here) in our livestock and by genetic engineering of our produce – I think these changes are really going to impact our ability to experience good health on ANY diet unless we are growing our own food or buying food from trusted sources who are refusing to capitulate to demands that they comply with these “health” measures. The “organic” label is not, to my knowledge, going to protect people from consuming mRNA products.

  9. 61 yrs of age. In May had my best (middle age) blood panel ever: lowest and healthy numbers for triglycerides and cholesterol in ~20 years and NOT on a statin. Have been low carb/almost no sugar (not necessarily keto) for past two years. Also quite a bit of protein. Overnight fast always at least 12 hours, but usually 14-16 hrs.
With previous doctor (an internal medicine specialist) for about the same 20 years I admittedly ate lots of sweets and high-glycemic carbs, but dr. rarely asked about that, but always had me on a statin and I still had high triglycerides and poor cholesterol levels.

It’s what you eat that makes all the difference!

  10. I injured my knee, bent it the wrong way. My remedy, mountain biking for 4 hours on a nice summer afternoon. Fixed it!! Our medical would never recommend that, or keto or Dr. Berg. At 57 I’ve learned who to trust. Thank you Dr. Berg.

  11. Found Dr. Bergs videos a 1 year ago. Since then I’ve lost 40 lbs, my skin is healthier and my blood pressure is down. I haven’t even attempted keto, just the way Eric explains how foods affect me makes it easy to make better decisions. I haven’t quit eating anything completely I’m just conscious of my intake. Watch his lemon water and intermittent fasting those two combined is wildly effective. Thanks Doc

    • Yes! Agree- cut out bad carbs – increased my exercise – got on the supplements – off statins- ( I take another form of cholesterol lowering) because of family history of heart disease 2.5 mg.
      Eating vegetables and fatty fish-
My blood pressure normalized/ I have more energy throughout the day- no more bloating or acid reflux- feel normal stomach went down flatter – cut out alcohol -sleep better at night lost 12 pounds
5’7”- 129 pounds- knee pain gone! Thank you Dr Berg!! God bless you ❤️Great content – ( works) I’ll be 80 in 4 weeks 😀💞👍

  12. Dr Berg im 27 year old. From the age of 5 ive been running, sprinting swimming and cycling till this Day… I regularly do 16/8 intermittent fasting… Feeling great…
    Thank you!!!

  13. As a fitness expert who has also studied nutrition, I have tried countless times to explain the cholesterol/diet issue and debunk old information, but I’ve noticed that people have a difficult time understanding it without having a deeper understanding of biology. This is an amazing explanation that really breaks it all down in an easy to understand and implement process. It’s invaluable, and you are helping so many people! Thank you for the time and thought you put into your presentations with such life changing and life saving information!

  14. I’ve been following Dr. Berg’s advice for over 6 months now.
I do intermittent fasting and basically try to do 90% of what he recommends, as much as possible.
I’ve lost significant amount of fat and gained muscle mass (I workout)
I feel like a whole new person. Best way to describe my progress.

  15. Proud to say me and my husband have lost 185 pounds doing Keto and IF. We can’t believe the progress we’ve made in a short period of time. The changes we made were not easy but it’s been so worth it! Sugar was killing us every day. I’m so glad we were able to make changes and avoid being on medication. Thank you for these videos Dr. Berg!

    • While advertisements of the day are glorifying a fat body they are also distracting people from the desirability of good health. Glad to hear you beat the system!

  16. I’m so glad you are raising awareness on this issue, Dr.Berg. My dad is on all these meds you’ve mentioned and his blood sugars are getting harder to control. We corrected his diet but he obviously doesn’t get into ketosis, and now I can guess why. Our cardiologist is not on board, he is very traditional.. I think the best we can do at this point is supplementing with milk thistle and barberine
