Today, we’re going to talk about the potential dangers and benefits of alkaline water.

Natural water from a well or spring is alkaline. It’s alkaline because it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Many people believe that things that are acidic are unhealthy and things that are alkaline are healthy. But that’s not altogether true. We have a lot of different acids in our bodies that have many important functions.

We don’t need to worry about alkalizing the body. The body regulates the pH in different areas. For example, your blood should be slightly alkaline, but your stomach should be very acidic.

It’s possible to get alkaline water created by a machine that uses electricity to alter it instead of using minerals to alkalize it. If you drink alkaline water that's created artificially, you’re going to alter the pH in the stomach.

Potential side effects of alkaline water made artificially can include:
• Heartburn
• Acid reflux
• Gas
• GERD
• Infection
• Hair loss
• Heart arrhythmias

However, natural water, like alkaline spring water, has no side effects.

Alkalizing the stomach could lead to a deficiency in stomach acids. The stomach should be very acidic to help you break down protein, absorb minerals and vitamin B12, and kill pathogens. As we age, we lose stomach acid.

Antacids also weaken stomach acid. But, low stomach acid is the root cause of symptoms like heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux. Alkalizing the stomach instead of acidifying it could worsen these symptoms and lead to many other serious side effects.

I’ve found that I can digest better when I drink acidic water, like carbonated water—especially if I add a teaspoon of either apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.

Overall, alkaline water has certain health benefits because it contains minerals. But alkaline water is only beneficial if it’s natural and not created by a machine.

  1. I fell for the “alkaline diet” back when this started to be promoted! Thank you so much for insisting on the actual facts!

  2. Hello Dr. Berg. I love your videos because they are informative and helpful. I recently purchased a Kangen water machine and I am attempting to assess how my body feels differently after two months. The purchase was not inexpensive and the time has passed to return the machine. I wish I had seen your video before purchasing this very expensive machine.

    • Understandable to have divided opinion after watching. But that is truly a life changing machine. I still plan owning one. Know too many people who had life saving benefits.

    • Hey Cheryl! Someone in comments says you can adjust the ph so maybe try lowering it? I wouldn’t throw it out or anything.

    • I own a Kangen machine as well , I’m not a distributor. I’m an end user and I will say this kangen water isn’t just “alkaline” water , it’s hydrogen molecular water which is a lot different! Reason why Japanese hospitals use them.

    • I agree with dr Berg some of our organs should be acidic , but like I said Kangen is hydrogen molecular water . And there’s benefits in drinking hydrogen molecular water.

  3. Great information as alwaysDr Berg. I’ve been distilling my own water for 5 years now. (It’s made a big difference in clearing brain fog- btw). But due to stomach acid, I was thinking of going more alkaline. (I will not now, thank you!) However, I was also thinking of trying apple cider vinegar, along with baking soda in the mornings. Do you think apple cider vinegar and baking soda is a good combination? And if yes or no, why or why not? Thank you. 😊

    😺👍

    • Hi Fidel Catsro! Great to have the inFurmation.
I found that very interesting about volcanic influences to water ingredients, and so much water, or pre-water deep in the earth! God misses nothing! He’s got it all figured out, and all for the benefit of life!
Thank you, as always! May all the cats reading this have a Purrrr-fect day of Meow-velous activities, and bye fur now….Over and Meow-t. ❤️🐈❤️🐈❤️💜🕊💜❤️🐈❤️

  5. I’ve been drinking ionized water for about 6yrs now and it feels great drinking it. The machine (Kangen Enagic) produces different water types or has levels of PH so You can change the alkalinity level to your preference. – The water taste better and i feel better. 💦 👌🏼

  6. Thank you! I used to drink that stuff! That was years ago, though. It was expensive, I looked at the label and I _assumed_ alkaline water _was healthy._ Packaging does a lot of the lying for industry.

  7. Questions for Dr. Berg: Is there any way to not only test the alkaline/acidity of the water but also test our urine – on our own? Something over the counter? To see how we are without going to a doctor office?

    • My midwife tested my urine when I was pregnant and drinking alkaline water. She was surprised and said my urine was more alkaline than she usually sees. All that to say, you can buy the same pee strips a midwife or Dr’s office uses to check the pH of your urine.

  8. I already have issues with reflux and someone gave me a bottle of Fiji water several years ago. I was so sick. I knew there was no way I needed to be drinking it but didn’t know it was bad for everyone. Thx Dr Berg! ❤

  9. great information, thanks for sharing. I stopped drinking alkaline water awhile back, but when I bought it. I made sure it was natural. I wonder what you found on reverse osmosis and triple filtered water?? I started buying and drinking these types of water in most recent years.

  10. Awesome video Dr. Berg people must understand. In all situations there must be balance.
    Happy health to everyone

  11. I get *insane* leg cramps with keto. I take trace minerals and have tried multiple daily scoops of electrolyte powder for months, eat an avocado every day with microgreens salad. The ONLY thing that works for me is alkaline water. I’m so glad for this video. I’m glad to see I’m at least drinking the right kind because alkaline water is the *only* water I drink.

  12. Thank you for shining light on many fads that people are getting involved with.
My take on electrifying water is the possible problem of sintering. For example, when colloidal silver is made, two silver wires are immersed in water and a current is passed between the wires. When the electrons leave the wire and go into the water, some silver atoms “sinter” off and enter the water with the electron current. This creates a so-called “gas” of silver atoms in the water, because the silver atoms are free and not clumped in a crystal form. At one time, colloidal silver was used as an antiseptic for eye surgery. The absorption of the colloidal silver “gas” by the body is said to be 100%. Silver is not toxic to human cells.
If they use stainless steel as an electrode to make alkaline water, what sinters off is iron, chromium, and nickel atoms. You have probably spoken to chromium and iron as supplements.
However nickel is not a supplement, I believe it is a poison in the human body.

  13. Hello Dr. Berg, Good day to you and your family.
My 1st point is having carbonated water which has iodised salt that is bad for health which you described in one of your older videos but i had a Better idea on your opinion of drinking alkaline water …which is that you said from the spring which is not obviously available in our backyard like yours then i had a idea of boiling the water and adding himalyan pink salt to alkaline it. So is this a good idea of adding himalyan pink salt and drinking it often in the day instead of drinking it only while working out?🤷🏻
Thank you for all the amazing information to the world that you provide.

  14. Hi Dr Berg always watch your vlogs they are so well explained to make us aware how to nurture and look after our bodies as it’s our only vessel we have so why not keep it well oiled and maintained 😊I would love to see a vlog on chemical sprays on mass produced foods , although I grow as much food as possible ,but in winter i buy my salads from the store and on one of the package said “ not washed in chlorinated water” this got me thinking is my salads hydroponic not in soil or if sprayed if in soil? I always wash my food regardless but I have herd submerging in water with white vinegar can help remove any chemicals? Would love your thoughts ?😌

  15. I had researched this about a year ago and your insights and videos have helped me understand about PH , thank you @Dr. Eric Berg DC

  16. Thank you Dr. Berg for very important information…I was guessing the same regarding the Alkaline water..you made me more clear about it.

  17. I appreciate the clarity that you provide within your posts Dr. Berg especially the one for the most basic thing regarding the human existence or life on this planet the water that is part of us please continue to share and I will definitely continue to follow😅😊

  18. Dr. Berg i have been following you for a while I trust your videos and this one in particular catches my attention. My father is 83 years old he was healthy only medical issue is he only has one kidney due to cancer but he has maintained his levels and is not in renal failure stage some person sold my parents alkaline water system for their house about 2 months after the system was installed my father had a stroke. I don’t want to think that this water was the cause of this nightmare.
