Let’s talk about the symptoms of long COVID and the natural things you can do if you experience these issues.

Post-COVID-19 symptoms can include:
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Decreased attention
• Memory problems
• Shortness of breath
• Distortion of smell
• Muscle weakness
• Brain fog
• Post-exercise issues

Post-COVID symptoms are often worsened by both mental and physical stress.

Growing evidence shows that this problem is strongly associated with an alteration in the vitamin D genes.

If someone has a predisposition to a vitamin D deficiency, they may experience more COVID symptoms and have a higher risk of symptoms long after the original infection.

Vitamin D is the most essential vitamin to support the immune system, and vitamin D deficiencies increase the risk of viruses.

Many different things can decrease your absorption of vitamin D, and getting plenty of sun or taking a vitamin D supplement is crucial.

Vitamin D also controls folate, and a lack of folate is associated with the severity and duration of symptoms from the COVID-19 virus as well.

There are a few things you can try to increase your vitamin D, including:
• Vitamin D3 supplements (minimally 10,000 IU per day)
• Topical vitamin D (nanoemulsion technology)
• Semi-activated vitamin D
• Light therapy

Additional things you can do to help increase the effectiveness of the above options include:
1. Taking vitamin D3 irregularly
• You might take 50,000 IU of vitamin D3, then wait a few days, and take 20,000 IU of vitamin D3

2. Take the co-factors for vitamin D3, including:
• Magnesium
• Zinc
• Vitamin K2

3. Do intense exercise

4. Increase butyrate by consuming salad or vegetables

5. Consume sulforaphane (broccoli sprouts or other sprouts)

6. Consume omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil or cod liver oil)

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B3 may also be involved in long COVID. It’s important not to neglect B vitamins in your diet.

Consuming refined carbs, stress, or antibiotics can deplete vitamin B1. The ketogenic diet can also increase the demand for B vitamins.

You may want to take nutritional yeast or a natural B1 complex along with vitamin D3 to help support your body and overcome symptoms of long COVID.

  1. Thanks Dr Berg. My friend has had no smell or taste since April 2020!! It has only returned a little bit since then. She is severally vitamin D deficient. I shared this video with her. Thank you thank you thank you. Just what I needed to see this morning.

  2. I have been taking NAC with bromelain on an empty stomach and adding natto to my diet along with my regular vitamins and minerals. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!

    • Nattokinase help me a lot after the vaccine… I had a lot of issue, being tired all the time… I have try a lot of things, and nattokinase was the best for me…

    • I found a nattokinase supplement in my country, but it says it doesn’t have vitamin k2 in it, promoting it like that is a benefit. Isnt the advantage of eating natto that you get the K2 vitamin?? Am I missing something?

  3. *Let’s only take a moment to appreciate how much hours and work he put in this vid?*
*It’s unbelievable, and I think they deserve a lot more than that* 1:34

  4. Perfect timing for this video! I know so many people who are experiencing long covid symptoms. Sharing this video with my loved ones. Thank you Dr. Berg!

  5. I am unvaxxed, got a mild case of Covid, and the brain fog that still plagues me is real. Two years so far…It’s getting better, I think, but still an issue. Not sure if my age is a contributing factor or not. I have been Keto since 2018, and eat clean and take all the recommended supplements..It’s so frustrating.

  6. I won’t say I had a fantastic functioning brain before covid but I have got it at least twice( no shots) and this definitely sounds like me. I also have anxiety and my ocd has gotten markedly worse to the point of interfering with every day.
I know pretty much every malady is treated best by diet change but damn it sugar is my weakness.

  7. Vitamin D really is a key. When I was not eating a healthy Keto diet and exercise I had Vitamin D issues. My psoriasis was through the roof and I was always sick. Once I changed my diet and started taking a D supplement the ailments went away. the 45 minute walk every day and 3 hours on Sunday probably helps as well.

  8. If there were one solution it would not be a problem. Gez Medinger’s channel is very informative about the probable causes, tests, and treatment strategies.
Approaching four years into the pandemic, we still know way less than we would want to about the disease and about Long Covid. The biggest mystery to me: why seasoned athletes have such high rates of Long COVID. Gez himself is (might be again sometime, anyway) a half-marathoner. There are a few supplements that help; niacin and NAC help some people but nothing helps most. Autonomic conditioning helps many, but there is still no one answer.
The biggest mystery of all is why there is not a concerted effort to understand and treat what the US Census Bureau estimates are “11% of American adults who have ever had COVID-19….” and have persistent COVID aftereffects, particularly profound fatigue and a variety of autonomic symptoms. Estimates of Americans disabled by Long Covid symptoms range from 2 million to 4 million; the Department of Labor has identified Long Covid can qualify as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Worst of all, there are many who acquired Long Covid in 2020 who are at best partially recovered. Since COVID-19 is well on its way to being endemic, we will inevitably see those numbers climb. If we don’t get a handle on this the future looks dark.

    • I’ve just come out of 18mths of LC took high doses of vit d all through the pandemic, I’ve found Gez’s info very helpful, niacin, antihistamines & vit b2 we’re very helpful.

    • I got it January of 2020 and still messed up I’ve tried everything and still feel the same. It’s ruined me financially and mentally 😪

  9. This actually explains a lot. I never realized it could have been from Covid. I only attributed my loss of smell to Covid. I though it was aging. And I’m only in my 30s. How relieved! Thank you doc. I’m in Canada so yeah, we don’t get enough vitamin D here in the first place.

    • @Trinity 88 oh I never got that lol I had Covid once that I knew of. I was pregnant, had a fever for one night, didn’t even take anything for it. Had nasal congestion for about a week, nothing out of the ordinary. After the congestion cleared up, I realized I couldn’t smell anything anymore. It’s been almost 2 years. I can smell a but, but not much. Also, a few months later I stayed in the hospital for 3 days after having my baby by c section. I was healthy and doing well. Came back, and the day after everything tasted weird. I thought it was just what I was eating, but some foods just tasted strange. Garlic was horrible. I guess I had covid in the hospital and didn’t know? Zero symptoms. It’s strange.

  10. Groundbreaking! I knew Vitamin D was important for immunity and I knew it’s absorption was an issue, but this really brought it all together and seems to make so much sense. This should be what doctors are recommending over novelty drug therapies with little to no scientific backing. Ty Dr Berg

    • Yeah… as if Vitamin D was enough to help long haulers. That’s a joke. It’s definitely a key part, but if Vitamin D cured long covid… LOL If you know someone suffering from long covid have them look into this channel or dry fasting.

    • I had this happen to me in 1989. I spent ten days on oxygen in the hospital. The doctor thought it was a corona virus. My breathing was bad all year and a year later I was hospitalized again, only I was eight months pregnant. They didn’t discover that I was D deficient until 2012. I was taking 1,000 of D and a half hour walk, in the sun, every day.

  11. I have many long haul covid symptoms. Including muscle problems, no sense of smell, memory problems, brain fog, etc. I was so sick, for months, and got it twice. I even developed heart rhythm problems, also. But, I was diagnosed with RSV. Covid tests were all negative. I have a feeling the tests were wrong, because I didn’t think there WAS such a thing as long haul RSV.

  12. After getting covid 3 years ago(no vax), i quit smoking, started taking zinc, vit D k2, vit B complex, selenium, milk thistle, vit C, krill oil, magnesium, cod liver oil. I haven’t had covid, a flu or even a small case of the sniffles since. Thank you Dr. Berg for teaching me about vitamins, how my body operates and what it needs to thrive.

Side note: i have also been losing lots of weight, inches and inflammation. Just another benefit of watching Dr. Berg.

  13. Thanks Dr. Berg once again you give us useful information that we can’t get anywhere else! Makes total sense! Please continue with this valuable information we depend on you! I literally can’t live without Vitamin D3 K2 God bless!

  14. I got covid (not the shot) and felt this way for months. Then I decided to do a 40 day cleanse, 2 weeks juice fasting, 2 weeks raw vegan, 2 weeks cooked vegan but no soy or gluten. And after that 40 days I felt back to normal. In my opinion, the 2 week juice fast was the most important part of the cleanse, I don’t think I needed 40 days, during the juice fast I got sicker than I have EVER been. It was worse than any cold I was seriously unwell. But at the end of the 2 weeks, I used the washroom and let’s just say something BLACK came out of me. Ever since then I been back to normal I don’t know what came outta me..

    • @Franny yeah! I did a second round of fasting about a year later with mostly green juices for another 2 weeks but did NOT have the same effect, I did not get sick at all that time nor did I pass anything strange. Makes me believe I really did remove something that has not come back!

    • @Stéphan Gauthier I agree! As a former nurse black stools often mean occult blood (non active bleeding further up GI tract), I have witnessed occult blood in practice many times however I can confirm I did not experience any GI bleeds 🙂

  15. I love your work, Dr Berg! Would love to see content on how so many cultures have bread and rice and potatoes and don’t seem to have the obesity America has. Just returned from Croatia and didn’t see one truly obese person over two weeks. Some people got a little pudgy when older, but the difference was drastic compared to all the overweight people in America. Many thanks.

    • Starchy food’s don’t cause weight gain if eaten moderately (in fact they’re highly necessary for joggers, triathletes, and bodybuilders) but eating them when trying to lose weight will cause issues because starchy foods contain carbohydrates which are bad for and slow down the fat loss process. Obesity is caused by Americas normalization of fast, high sugar, and/or processed foods. Im in my late 20s and am only starting to realize how bad my diet has been because of my upbringing and thanks to schools. It makes weight loss a real challenge when you grew up on an unhealthy lifestyle..also we have one of the worst FDAs in civilized societies. A lot of the things that get a pass here would not be allowed to be sold as food in other developed countries.

    • Chemical manipulation in the food system here. If you are familiar with how in other nations there are certain ingredients and ways of processing foods that they do NOT do that America does.
Too much convenience where so much is push a button here and there. Everywhere. Some of that technology which has kept a lot of people at home, even the kids.
Not letting people just go ahead and do some physical work on things but always making things for convenience in everything so that adds to the weight gain.

    • I went to France back in January and I went off my keto diet for 2 weeks. I ate croissants and French bread every single day and I didn’t gain a single ounce of weight. I also ate desserts and again did not gain weight. No itching or hives either. When I got back to the US I did a modified keto and I immediately began gaining weight and suffered a lot of inflammation. There are no additives in French food because it’s against the law. I believe our health problems are caused by toxins in our foods and not the foods themselves. I’m almost to the point where I’m allergic to every single food. I don’t know if I can live with the chronic itching. Sometimes I’ve thought about just quitting eating all together even if I die.

  16. I’m a diagnosed Covid long hauler. My doctor was really concerned about my vitamin D levels. He even believed the low levels was responsible for the muscle cramps I had been experiencing. I started taking fish oil, a teaspoon a day and my levels are now normal.

  17. I remember recovering from Covid in January, realizing my brain was operating at about 50% speed, and thinking “there’s no way I can go back to work if this doesn’t get better.” Luckily it did, after a week or two, but I sympathise with those struggling.

I have some lasting damages from the infection. Those things aren’t going away, but that’s not “long covid.” In fact, leaving those aside, I feel healthier than I have in years.

I hope these suggestions are useful to some people, but I think that “long covid” has a number of potential causes. Probably some are treatable by supplementation. But actual tissue or nerve damage from inflammation can take a long time to heal indeed. There’s also theories that some long haulers have ongoing covid infections and/or continuing immune response against a tissue that was infected but no longer is.

  18. Thank you for posting this info, Dr. Berg. My wife and I are currently experiencing some of the symptoms of Long Covid. They’ve been lessening daily, but it’s a slow process. Nice to know there is a solution that can speed up the recovery process.

  19. Thanks Dr. Berg for telling true resources and strategies for dealing with post covid post vac Wuhan gift. The doctors were offended at suggestions of taking zinc, Vit D or anything other than the vax. Im surprised ur not canceled by the left yet, Im glad ur able to still share.
