  2. Fish yes, lower saturated fat and better oils. Hong Kong’s favourite dish is beef broth noodle, fishball soup, etc. I’m assuming Hong Kong doesn’t have big insulin resistance and diabetes issues like most in the west. Avoiding highly processed foods is a big one.

  3. Very good breakdown thanks for that, I’m screwed either way I’m from and live in Scotland meaning I eat deep fried chocolate bars and deep fried pizza for breakfast 😅

  4. Best indicator for me whether meat is healthy or not is how so many are curing “incurable” diseases on a meat only diet. If it was that bad for us, this wouldn’t be the case.

It’s hard to really consider any of these conducted studies seriously.

  5. This was a great video. And introducing a political dimension and context into longevity or functional medicine is exactly what it takes to further the cause of human health and well-being.

  6. They need only consult Mongolia to separate the effect of meat consumption from the effect of being wealthy. Mongolians are famously healthy and strong, a clear result of their fully animal product diets.

    • @Siim Land Doesn’t line up well with much richer China and its 78 year life expectancy. I would need to double check their meat consumption as it may have come down from the old days where everyone including the poorest man owned cattle and ate mostly meat and dairy, but it looks like it is a correlation rather than a causation.

    • @Random Guy Can’t be since Hong Kong consumes the most meat by far and it hasn’t affected their life span at all. The perfect counter example.

    • That seems true and I am vegetarian. However, in this study, elderly Hong Kong citizens that ate the greatest variety of fruits and vegetables lived the longest

Participants: Community-dwelling Chinese older adults aged ≥65 years in Hong Kong. Conclusion: Among community-dwelling Chinese older adults,

Fruit Vegetable variety was not associated with sarcopenia, frailty, CVD mortality and cancer mortality over 14-year. Higher fruit variety, vegetable variety and combined FV variety were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Methods: Data was derived from a cohort study among Chinese community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 65 years in Hong Kong.

Results: Baseline dietary data of 3992 participants (median age: 72 years (interquartile range: 68-76), 49.9% women) was available. There were 436 and 371 participants who were newly identified as having sarcopenia and frailty respectively, and 1654 all-cause mortality, 367 cardiovascular diseases (CVD) mortality and 534 cancer mortality over 14-year. Tertiles of fruit variety, vegetable variety and combined FV variety were not associated with sarcopenia, frailty, CVD mortality and cancer mortality. Participants in the highest tertile of fruit variety (HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.70-0.95, p-trend 0.010), vegetable variety (HR 0.77, 95% CI 0.67-0.89, p-trend <0.001) and combined FV variety (HR 0.77, 95% CI 0.67-0.89. p-trend <0.001) showed lower risk of all-cause mortality compared with participants in the lowest tertile.

Now take a look at who did the best cognitively with respect to Hong Kong Elders, . (High variety FV eating women were out of luck here, but men eating the highest variety of FV had the best cognitive function)

Results: Of the 1518 participants [median age: 70 years (IQR 68-74), 32.7% women] included at baseline, 300 men and 111 women were newly identified as cognitively impaired at the 4-year follow-up. In men, higher variety in vegetable (adjusted OR: 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-0.99, p = 0.029) and combined FV (adjusted OR: 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-0.98, p = 0.039) were significantly associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment. Fruit variety was not associated with cognitive impairment. In women, there were no associations between variety in fruit, vegetable and combined FV with cognitive impairment in the adjusted model. Conclusion: Independent of FV quantity, higher variety in vegetable and combined FV were associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment in Chinese community-dwelling older adults, and these associations were only observed in men.

      Yeung SSY, Kwok T, Woo J. Higher fruit and vegetable variety associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment in Chinese community-dwelling older men: a 4-year cohort study. Eur J Nutr. 2022 Jun;

    • @jack buaerI wonder if they controlled for amount of fruits and vegetables, given that I’d assume the variety also means a larger amount, unless they ate very variable but small portions of each.

    • @LVArturs In a follow-up study, the authors address the issue that you’re raising with the following conclusion

“Our findings have first showed that the variety, rather than quantity, in FV intake was associated with a lower risk of mortality in older Chinese. Dietary guidelines may recommend increasing the variety in FV intake, especially green, red/purple, and white FVs in older people.”

  7. I do raw meat lately and it doesn’t cause much inflammation. I used to have to mouth breathe after meal only meals. Not so eating equal amounts of raw meat.

  8. Siim doesnt meat increase bowel cancer risk and increase IGF1, which increases cancer risk drastically? All blue zones eat little meat

    • Somewhere recently (I think it was The Economist) I read about data showing that lots of blue zones are poorer than average for their countries, hence have lax birth records, and that there have been historical data from USA showing that after mandating standardized birth certificates the number of long livers dropped substantially. So I really hope all the blue zone research is valid and that the scientists had adjusted for this somehow…

  9. The A merican Cattleman’s Association did a bang up job on this one. Seriously, why would anyone spend one red cent on such a ridiculous study?

  10. Using the data that uses meat consumed by the country is just ridiculous, first because it considers the meat eaten by animals and pets, second and more important, the consume of meat takes in consideration the fast food eaten by the young generation, not the people who are 90 yo. Second, this study is looking at countries, not a populations. For example in the usa, mormons adventists and amish live but each one have their own habits of eating. You cannot mingle them together and say there is an average consume of meat. Adventists simply eat little meat, while amish eat a lot. Do adventists have less heart attacks, cancer, stroke, etc ? You can bet. Also, there must be a consideration that not all meat is meat. For example, fish is obviously more healthy than chicken, which is more healthy than red meat. Yogurt is more healthy than cheese.

  11. I believe eating meat and the associated fat, is critical to good health. I don’t believe this study, with its confounding variables, and its focus on life expectancy from a very young age informs us in any way on the contribution of meat consumption to longevity.
