Every year, a few times a year, I have a bad reaction to poison ivy. This time, it has affected my eye.

Each time I was exposed and had a bad reaction, I was given prednisone. It got to the point where, after I was exposed, the effects of the poison ivy wouldn’t go away after using prednisone.

People typically take prednisone for its anti-inflammatory or immune suppressant effects. But, prednisone has side effects.

Prednisone is a synthetic version of cortisol. Cortisol has benefits. It’s a hormone that helps the immune system and prepares the body for stress. But, high cortisol levels can lead to a lot of health concerns.

You don’t want to be on prednisone forever. The more you take it, the more it weakens the system. But, if you stop taking it, your symptoms may come back. So, why don't we get to the root problem? Keep in mind that once you start taking prednisone, it’s important not to come off of it too fast. Prednisone and cortisol also deplete the body of numerous vitamins and minerals.

The best ways to lower cortisol:
1. Lower your stress (do physical work, exercise, spend more time on a hobby, and take certain nutrients)
2. Take ashwagandha
3. Try breathing exercises
4. Use an HRV device to better understand your stress

  1. Just wanted to stop by and say that as a result of watching your channel, I have improved my life 1000%! I went from 265 to 210. No more high blood pressure, diabetes, and other maladies associated with inflammation of the joints and hips. It’s winter now, so I am having trouble walking outdoors I had to move to the gym which is not optimal for me. I was up to 10 miles a day before winter, so this is killing me, lol. THANK YOU, DR. BERG!

    • @@missmaria165 Are there any malls left, seriously most have shut down. Not that I care since I rarely shopped there after 1995 anyways. The only thing left in the malls were high priced boutiques.

    • What have you changed/done that helped so much? I’m asking because I keep trying things and nothing works 😢

    • Dr Berg will be back. The Berginator .. “The truth will be told”. No need for an Uzi machine gun or automatic shotgun. The glasses suit you Dr Berg 👍🏻😉

    • In bad weather, we’d go to the largest mall in the earliest hour and do our walking there. Window shopping never gets boring 😊

  2. Poison ivy oils are very volatile; if you’re extremely sensitive you can get it from the air. No one is thinking about how bad you look, just concerned for how bad you feel – wishing you a speedy recovery, Dr. Berg!

  3. Dr Berg. I’ve been on IF and Keto for nearly 1 year. I’m 64 and my health and bloodwork has never been better. Thank you for all you do

  4. Thank you Dr. Berg!! Sorry you are embarrassed but thank you so much for putting yourself aside and giving the video anyway!! I NEEDED this!!!!

  5. Dr.Berg thank you so much for helping me with how to do proper keto.
I lost 60 pounds and 3 years later kept it off by doing simple ketogenic diet. Watching your videos have educated me and my lifestyle has totally change for good. Thank you Sir!

  6. My girlfriend had Lupus and the doctors gave her higher and higher levels of Prednisone and after several years, whenever they tried to reduce her dose (which was way too high) she would have a flair of her Lupus every time and end up in the hospital. She ended up dying in her early 60s as the prednisone thinned her skin and the “skin” of her organs and her heart tissue was like crepe paper. She went in for heart surgery and the surgeon had to stop as her heart was falling apart. So sad.

    • I’m so sorry for her experience and yours with her. What preventable tragedy; if only they’d known the ways of fasting and anti-inflammatory diets. So much needless suffering out there, and her story is particularly heart-wrenching. HUGS!!!

    • So sad to hear 🙁 I have it too.. horrible. I wonder when she started was it so bad that it actually helped? I’m sorry for your loss.. hope you are doing well.

  7. When I was a teenager, I started breaking out in poison ivy and getting the shots every year when people burned it off. When I graduated high school, I went to live on a wintering farm for race horses near the Pennsylvania/Maryland border. The farm also had a herd of cows and a herd of goats (which were used as companion animals for the high-strung race horses). I drank the raw goat milk and stopped being allergic to poison ivy. I was told that the goats eat poison ivy and pass their immunity to it to their kids through their milk.

    • Hey, i stopped reacting to poison ivy after I started drinking raw milk, both cow and goat. I never thought about the connection until you mentioned it here. Just thought I was growing stronger in my old age. Thanks for sharing.

    • I think I heard about this once before. I’m not to my knowledge allergic to poison ivy. So I ignored this. But it is excellant advice! I drink pastureized goats milk and love it it is easier on my stomach!😅

    • True, I can wade through the stuff and rub it on me and it doesn’t do anything, I drank many raw things on farms over the years.

  8. Dr. Berg, you are the most important doctor in my life(60 years) which helped me understand ME! How to identify the health problem and how to fix it. You should be awarded in much more ways!

    • I would like to share my stories after I started to be educated by Dr. Berg. I lowered my weight by 15 lb, which I was never able to do so in last 20 years. My HDL was raised to above 45, while it never reaches normal level of 40. Your suggestion to take ACV fixes my 30 years stomach problem. After taking your diets, my 25 years fatty liver disappeared. Again, this may not be a big deal to many of people. However, Dr. Berg taught me how to understand myself. That’s significant. Thank you. Dr. Berg!

  9. I hope you feel better Dr. Berg. I also react badly to poison ivy and it really itches. The weird bubbles on my skin are horrible too. Take care and rest! Rooting for your immune system.

  10. Praying for you Doc. When I was young, I was allergic to Poison Ivy, I would get it internally it just had to be in the air.
My whole face would swell up and I couldn’t even open my eyes… I haven’t gotten it in about 15 years now and as the years passed, my reaction got less and less… Only thing I take is Benadryl and use cornstarch in a white sock for the itch and drying of blisters…
    Bless you….

  11. Thank you Dr. Berg for all the support and help you’ve provided me and my husband. I really enjoy your videos, and your humor, but today must be my favorite. I appreciate you, and I will pray for you and your continued success in helping people around the world with what should be mainstream information, but sadly isn’t. Thanks for the laugh!

  12. For a man as smart as you to fight a long term battle with poison Ivy is truly mind boggling. I have had it a couple of times of in long life but never on my radar but I don’t go walking around through nature a lot.
Feel better Dr. Berg. If anybody can solve the riddle, its you.

  13. Dr. Berg: Thank you for educating us even when you aren’t feeling well and for your humor. We hope you take it easy and recover soon.

  14. Dr. Berg, you look good even with a swollen eye. No need to wear sunglasses. Speedy recovery and thank you for sharing this situation with your audience.

  15. My girlfriend was able to rid herself of poison ivy much faster than I was able to. Her secret – avoid washing. Keep the skin as dry as possible. So sorry to hear of what you are suffering. Thank you for all your fantastic videos.

  16. So sorry to know you have poison ivy again. You have given so much to me and thousands of others.
Wishing you a very speedy recovery.
