In this video, we’re going to talk about the best and worst foods when dealing with a kidney problem.

The kidneys are composed of complex filters known as nephrons. A proper diet is crucial to support these nephrons.

If your nephrons are damaged, you may end up with a build-up of phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. It is essential to avoid junk food and minimize eating out.

One of the leading causes of kidney damage is diabetes, which comes from high blood sugar. Avoid sugar and compounds that act like sugar in the body, like refined starches.

Drugs, alcohol, certain medications, smoking, and ultra-processed foods all destroy the kidneys. Seed oils like corn oil, soy oil, cottonseed oil, and canola oil contribute to inflammation and damage to the kidneys as well.

Here are eight superfoods to include in your diet if you’re dealing with kidney damage:
1. Low phosphorus protein (sardines, salmon, cod, and sea bass)
2. Spirulina
3. Fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles)
4. Avocado
5. Extra virgin olive oil
6. Cottage cheese or goat cheese
7. Vitamin D
8. Baja Gold sea salt

If you have kidney damage, you’ll want to avoid foods that are high in oxalates, lectins, and tannins. Avoid things like nuts, spinach, meats high in phosphorus, eggplant, potatoes, beans, and grains.

Cat scans to examine damage to the kidney can also be very damaging. Opt for an ultrasound or MRI to assess kidney damage if possible.

If you have kidney disease or kidney problems, you can still consume vegetables. The following vegetables are safe options for people with kidney issues:
•Asparagus
•Celery
•Avocado
•Cucumber
•Garlic
•Cabbage
•Cauliflower
•Mushrooms
•Lettuce

  1. Dr. Berg; you are the year round gift of a humanitarian, Doctor of health and wellness that keeps on giving in what’s left of this immoral society!
Thank you so much for this wealth of health/life improving information!

  2. Thank you very much Dr. Berg! My father struggled with kidney failure and passed away. He had a successful transplant which lasted him 19 years! Always watched his diet.
    ✨✨✨2 questions: ✨✨✨
1.) Wondering if you can make a video about iodine supplementation and how it does or does not assist with cellular saturation? The sublingual form, such as a 5% solution. Just wanting your opinion and suggestions on this topic. I was told to begin iodine therapy but am unsure due to the side effects, doing my research.
2.) I need to detox my liver, kidneys, and have low cortisol across the day, I saliva tested. I’m anemic and have many skin issues. What can I eat?!! What should be my ideal diet?

    • If it’s iron deficiency anemia — I’ve started including a bit of fresh oranges, when eating beef (it’s the best meat for anemia).

You could do a 1/2 cup of orange juice, also (I do fresh oranges, to get the pulp/fiber).

The Vit. C helps iron absorb more effectively — up to four times better.

If you are anemic from B12 deficiency — HCI with betaine/hydrochloric acid with betaine.

This will help the body absorb the B12 more effectively, also.

Also, if it’s B12 — you could get methylcobalmine B12 liquid supplements; as it’s more absorbed into the body, easier, also.

I know a B9 deficiency can contribute, also — though, I have yet to learn much about that, yet.

      Oh, also..

I’ve been taking dandelion root extract, in an empty stomach — it helps clear the liver of biproducts, especially, estrogenic.

      Best wishes.

  3. In this video you really considered those with kidney issues, thank you so much. Awesome videos, you are a G for real. Dr Eric Berg is amazing!

  4. Asparagus. Celery. Lettuce. 🥑 Avocado. Cucumber. Garlic 🧄. Cabbage. Cauliflower. Mushrooms 🍄. Spirulina. Fermented foods. the refrigerated ones. Extra virgin olive oil. Organic cottage cheese. Goats cheese.

  5. I go to a Recovery Cafe in Muncie, Indiana. One 75 year old with kidney problems is always asking me what I recommend. Others in the group are also tuning into my nutritional comments, much of which comes from Dr. Berg videos. I am going to turn them onto this video. Because many of the Recovery Cafe members are addicts with digestive problems due to drug abuse, this video and others will help educate them. Thanks so much for all your due diligence.😊😊😊 I believe the Recovery Cafe started in Seattle Washington but is all across the country. It’s so supportive and so are you. Thanks again Dr. Berg!!!

  6. Thank you Dr Berg. I truly wish you were my nephologist. Mine is clueless. I’m at stage 3a and my nephrologist on day one told me when my eGFR reaches 20, she’ll put me dialysis. After reading books written by retired Neph. Doctors, it’s not recommended to start dialysis earlier than 15. She never talked to me about which foods to avoid, limit or which will help my kidneys. It seems like they’re only interested in leading you to the end stage 5 of this disease. I love your videos and learn a lot from you. Thank you so much. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

  7. The more I see nutrition videos from people that I trust, the more I want to go fully carnivore! Not a single carb…

  8. Dr. Berg you explain beautifully. Thank you for this wonderful education that you provide. Wish you the best holiday.

  9. My cat had end stage kidney disease. Was on an IV drip for most of a month. Difficult to get it to eat even a tiny amount of food. It was a skeleton! I cured it completely so you would never think it had kidney disease. I gave it as much colostrum as it would eat every meal for 6 months. And it worked very quickly! Every day from day 1 he was noticeably improved from the day before. It’s the growth hormone. Oh yes, and he was 17 years old. Just some info someone might find useful.

    • Colostrum in what form (pill/powder/liquid)?
From where (specific brand name) from vet/pet store/amazon?
      How did you administer?
Put in food or bottle/inject liquid in mouth?

    • Yes, I would like to know as well because we have an older cat and she’s been having some kidney issues. Thanks for any input on what you did to help your furbaby.

  10. This video helps soo much thanks dr. Berg I am going to implement everything you have said in this video to help my kidneys get better!! You’re the best doctor out there and this video was amazing thank you!!!!!

  11. My 72-year-old dad literally has a doctor’s appointment in an hour and five minutes. They’re giving him an ultrasound to look at his kidneys. Last week his doctor told him his kidneys and bladder are becoming low-functioning and that he’s pre-diabetic. No one’s surprised by this except him. I know this will be an uphill battle for my sister and I, but thank you Dr. Berg for producing this very timely video.
I’ll just be a happy if we can get him to cut his McDonald’s intake to once per week, to stop putting salt on bacon, and to limit each cup of coffee to four sugars instead of eight. 😳

  12. Can we all just acknowledge the fact that Dr.Berg looks extremely young and well for his age. He could pass for late 30s or early 40s. Proof he clearly knows what he’s talking about when it comes to maintaining health.🙏

  13. Thank you Dr Berg. Whenever I feel my body is not right, I will go look for Dr Berg video. I will follow his advice and it’s works every time. God bless you Dr Berg!

  14. Thank you! Please consider a nutritional breakdown of EVO vs avocado oil. I think a lot of people would like to see similarities and differences.

  15. This topic is so wonderful for kidney. Thank you so much Doctor Berg, your information always great content as usual. ❤
