10:00 How to give up sugar

In this video, we’re going to take a look at some of the amazing health benefits you’ll experience if you eliminate sugar from your diet for two weeks.

The following side effects can occur in as little as two weeks without sugar:
•Slimmer face (less round/puffy)
•Less puffy eyelids
•Reduced belly fat
•No more carb cravings
•Decreased hunger/more satisfaction after meals
•Improved mood
•Improved attention and focus (mental clarity)
•No more fluid retention
•Decreased pain and inflammation
•Decreased bloating and abdominal pain
•Improved sleep quality
•More relaxation/decreased adrenal stress
•Improved skin

When avoiding sugar, you also need to avoid refined starches, which can be even worse than sugar! Refined starches go through a refining process known as hydrolysis, which breaks the starches down. This process causes a more significant effect on your blood sugar than sugar itself.

For example, maltodextrin has a glycemic index between 110 and 136, while sugar and glucose have a glycemic index of 65 and 100, respectively.

Maltodextrin is found in countless food products, including certain health food products. If maltodextrin is added to a food product at less than .5 grams per serving size, manufacturers can claim that the product does not contain carbohydrates.

If the manufacturer uses a hydrolyzation process, they can also claim that the product contains zero grams of sugar! This means that many people are unknowingly consuming hidden sugars.

While dietary sugar consumption is going down, the percentage of ultra-processed food consumption is on the rise.

The good news is that there are healthy alternatives that are tasty too! Just be sure to look closely at the labels on the products you buy to avoid consuming excess sugar.

  1. Here I am googling in the middle of the night asking why do I get hungry fast when all day I depend on sodas. Thank you for saving my mental health Dr Berg.

    • It produces a hormone called grehlin. It will make you hungry. Try adding more fiber to your diet. It wont spike uinsulin levels as much as carbohydrates or protein. It will persist several cravings. Been doing this for years and feel sad for my family members bc they have all these issues and only if they would cut out all these things they could truly excel in life. Good luck to you in quitting the dopamine chase. Its the best thing i did.

  2. I’m doing OMAD and loving it. My bronchitis is almost gone and I feel so much better. Avoiding sugar and carbs is hard but I’ve almost got it kicked. Thanks Dr Berg!!!

    • Eating less is not the answer, you will lose fat but it will actually slow down your metabolism, leave you feeling miserable at points and you will lose muscle which is key to regulating your metabolism/weight. Emphasize eating protein and fat as much as possible, whenever you’re hungry.

    • @@LilithsCosmicLounge you can eat so many other foods from protein and healthy fat based. I lost about 30kg in about 2 and a half months when I totally stopped all these sugars and carbs. But I did it drastically. Only eat eggs, butter and a whole lot of lettuce/salad. Sometimes I fried cauliflower with eggs. Sometimes I eat broccoli with eggs. 16-8 intermittent fasting. When sometimes I really felt wanna eat outside eating period, I took some almonds or cashew nuts. Once every weekend I eat small portion of rice with grilled fish or chicken. That’s it. Zero sugar. No exercise.

    • I’m on day 4 of a 5 day fast and feel like a million dollars. Try prolonged fasting and you will love it. It’s the healthiest thing you can do to your body.

  3. Thank you Dr. Berg. From my childhood I was addicted to anything that is sweet. But after I was detected with T2 diabetes. I gave up sugar. Thank you doctor for these information. May God bless you.

  4. Absolute truths, been off sugar for almost 8 months now and my health is fantastic, also lost 15kgs

    • Hi Dr , yes I initially started keto with my wife, as she is battling cancer and it has done wonders for both of us, i do eat some carbs but at least 70-80% less than before, my carbs are oats with my yogurt , but everything improved in my body and i have so much more energy

  5. I’ve cut out sugary stuff, and I’ve noticed a difference in other things as well. I don’t have as much problem with arthritis, which really surprised me. I didn’t realize it, until I ate sugar again and it flared up my arthritis. I can get up and down off the floor now, without it killing my knees. And I’ve lost weight! I used to have a major sweet tooth and it is totally worth it to stop eating sugar!

  6. Thank you Dr. Berg for this video! I needed this video as I’m on my 3rd week without consuming sugar. I’ve notice I’m experiencing all the benefits that you’d have mentioned and I’m feeling better each and everyday. I don’t eat or snack after 5pm and I do a 30 minutes to an hour workout. I can definitely feel the differences. 😊

    • Just like heroin, it depends on how much you ate every day. Me? I was at 350 grams per day and went through horrible withdrawals. It took 2-3 weeks for me along with an 18:6 IF schedule and everything in my body turned around for the best. 52 pounds and 7 medications dropped was a life saver.

  7. Dr. Berg is amazing. For anybody who seems discouraged, you can do it. The change might come hard at first but it becomes easy and natural relatively quickly. You don’t even think about it anymore it becomes a natural habit. I have been doing this for over 7 months and I can attest to everything he’s saying it has changed my life and my family’s life for the better.

    • Respect! I went on his website and saw some of the results from some of his members. I know some websites or content creators make bold claims and falsify legit success stories and photos but I believe those who posted them. It’s VERY motivating and even if it would be fake, if it motivates people to change their lifestyle habits for the better in a safe non-invasive way then 10/10!

Can I ask you though how you handle those sweet cravings? Or have they all but dicipated now?

    • @@entropete 2 years ago I went low carb (bread, rice, pasta) for a few months in an effort to eat healthier. Lost 12 pounds. That gave me the motivation to go low sugar. Lost another 21 pounds.
I was never obese but still carrying 33 pounds for no good reason. Weight loss was a slow process for me. About a pound a week on average. Good luck!

    • @@Jizzlewobbwtfcus Read labels. Look for ‘added sugar’ and just refuse anything that has more than a minimum of added sugar.
Cravings for sugar/carbs will fade the more you stay away from them. I use stevia occasionally with tea. Good luck!

  8. People are oblivious about how much sugar is in everyday processed foods. It’s not the sugar in your sugar bowl that’s a worry. It’s the sugar in your pizza crust, in the pizza sauce, that bread at Subway, its in damn near everything. Start paying attention people. Manufacturers lace everything with sugar to get you hook on that sugar high and hooking you on their product.

  10. I was suffering from severe fatigue and a host of other symptoms. After watching a similar video about giving up sugar, I gave it up. At first I felt worse – and I had strange symptoms in my eyes. Eventually that calmed down. I continued without sugar for 2 years. No improvement and I still often have the puffiness around the eyes😢. It turns out I have advanced adrenal fatigue😢.

    • I also have adrenal fatigue. My doctor recommended lowering carbs altogether, not just sugar, and to eat more fat and protein instead. He also recommends taking rhodiola in the morning and fixing the microbiome with prebiotics and probiotics, and having 30 different kinds of veggies a week, and very little fruit. I have been doing this for 5 months and am feeling the difference. May be this might work for you, too?

  11. Stopped all sugar. No more nighttime peeing. Mood balanced. Clear headed. More social. No carb binges or need to binge. Win win . Never going back. Ever. Life feels too good when sugar no longer runs the show

    • I had the same results but lost my way at some point. I’m starting again, hope I can maintain it forever this time.

    • Like ebin said, “it’s possible to go back so so don’t say never.
I better never drink alcohol again but there’s no guarantee there either

    • In fact I recently started drinking coffee again with hazelnut creamer 10 grams of sugar. I’m still doing the 18/6 IF.

  12. I recently gave up sugar and all bad carbs including all starches and fruits high in fructose. I have lost over 20 lbs in one month. I did this because of watching your videos to improve my health and wellbeing. It has helped even with my depression.

  13. I still find it hard to believe that I gave up sugar and refined carbs almost 2 years ago when starting your healthy keto plan. I just had to give that all up because my health was failing due to my uncontrollable hunger with junk food. What an amazing feeling you get when coming off of all the unhealthy foods. I would’ve never thought it was possible, but I proved myself wrong. It can be proved if you have the willpower, discipline, and the drive to so. Good luck to all the people who want to become healthier!

  14. Eric, great video! The visualizations on the quantities of sugars contained in various processed food products brings it home and makes it stick in one’s mind. Also, the near-sugar ingredients like Maltodextrose, Dextrose, starches, etc… and their sugar equivalents given in visual form makes it easy to relate. I was unaware that these other ingredients were hyper-sugars in disguise. Thanks for the good information. BC

  15. As someone with a compromised colon (I lost most of it 3 years ago) when I don’t eat sugar, my digestion feels even better than when I had a fully functioning colon. Dr. Berg your knowledge is invaluable. Thank you!

  16. I used to have insomnia, adult acne, and several other random issues but it all stopped when I stopped eating a high carb diet. I wouldn’t say that I’m necessarily keto now but I definitely don’t have nearly as many issues as I once did. I feel so much better now and wake up with lots of energy!

    • Dr. Berg will you please do a video on the bread/pasta and other foods I found in my pantry that say it ‘CONTAINS BIOENGINEERED FOOD INGREDIENT’ under the ingredients. What exactly is it, what does it mean and what does it do to our bodies that big gov/FDA isn’t telling us? Does this bioengineered ingredient have any harmful effect on our health?
Thank you for all you do and I hope you have a wonderful and prosperous new year! ✌🏼❤️

  17. I’m Indian and i eaten 10 spoon of sugar daily and i faces some problem like brain fog, low invisibility, hypertension and many more. Now i watch this video and understand my problem thankyou dr. Eric Berg Sir 🙏
