Today, we’re going to take a look at vitamin B1, also known as thiamine. Vitamin B1 is intimately involved with the function of the mitochondria, so if you’re deficient, low energy is one of the first symptoms.
The more carbs and sugar you consume, the more B1 you need. This is because vitamin B1 is necessary to burn glucose.
Even on a ketogenic diet, you'll still burn glucose for certain functions of the body. Vitamin B1 is water soluble, so it isn't stored in the body for long periods. This makes it easier to become deficient.
B1 is also important for the myelin sheath—the coating on your nerves. B1 is crucial for the proper function of the autonomic nervous system and specifically affects the vagus nerve.
The following conditions and symptoms are related to a deficiency in vitamin B1:
•Gastroparesis (slow digestive system)
•GERD
•Peripheral neuropathy
•Regurgitation of bile
•Excessive sweating or no sweating at all
•Excessive tears or no tears at all
•Dizziness when standing up
•Irritability
•Low tolerance for stress
•Trouble regulating body temperature
•Increased pulse rate
If you have a more severe B1 deficiency, you might experience the following:
•Enlarged heart
•Edema
•Confusion
•Memory loss
•Nystagmus
•Ataxia
•Hearing loss
•Sleep apnea
•Trouble breathing
Avoid synthetic B1, which is sometimes made with hydrochloric acid, acetone, ammonia, and coal tar. Allithiamine and benfotiamine are the two best options for vitamin B1 supplements.
Drugs can also affect the absorption of vitamin B1. Metformin, diuretics, and certain antibiotics can lead to vitamin B1 deficiency. Low magnesium can affect vitamin B1 absorption as well.

I started having restless leg syndrome, and edema at the same time around when my thyroid started failing. Just recently struggling with GERD since surgery. But I never knew their connection! But being anemic from blood thinners, it caused alot of issues. I cannot do keto but eat 2x a day at most following that aspect of eating pattern. And tachycardia. Cannot tolerate extreme temps anymore. WOW.
I will make it my new priority. I thought nutritional yeast was enough.
THANK U DR BERG for making it CLEAR to me that I must take it daily. How much I do not know I will figure it out. I have motion sickness and eye visions, ear ringing, and sleep apnea – unreal.
All due to B1. THANK YOU I have tears that an in person doctor won’t solve a simple deficiency but make you feel that it’s rather in your head.
Dr. Berg, thank you again. 😊 I’ve been praying 🙏 for some answers, without breaking the bank and seeking out physicians who only band-aid the problem with prescription drugs, as to why I’m feeling the way I do, and do believe you’re onto something. Thank you for your help and expertise. God bless your heart ❤
B1 must be the most important vitamin for the brain; after I was in a coma and had a craniotomy it was the only pill I was given when I was leaving hospital
Yes it also prevents Dementia/Alzheimers that’s what Dr Berg have said in his other videos
Thanks @@amirhamza7610
Thank you for sharing your experience!
People detoxifying from alcohol often get injections of thiamine as well.
Great information 😊
Thank you Dr. Berg. Your knowledge & advice on keeping us healthy is so appreciated.
I can attest to this. Under the carnivore diet I was so energetic but when I reintroduced carbs back in my diet the lethargy came back until I started taking this vitamin. Ty for sharing
Basically every symptom you mentioned, I’ve got. I’ve been so scared thinking about what it might be. I will definitely be starting with B1. (Damned gastric bypass surgery.)
Thank you, Dr. Berg. Thank you. 🙏
How did it go?
I managed a bariatric surgical practice and weight management program. I’m hoping it went well, but I am not a huge advocate of bariatric surgery.
@tiffanybluetarot Check my post above regarding Benfotiamine, a water and oil soluble version of B1. I also had the exact symptoms Dr. Berg described and found Benfotiamine reduced my symptoms more effectively than traditional B1 (Thiamine or Thiamin).
@@colincolensothat’s exactly what a pharmacist told me to take. I can use this info with my patients regarding gastroparesis etc
what is your dose?
I nearly died a few years ago. Was hanging by a thread. Started taking high dose B1(1800-3000mgs) and stopped my seizures. Literally saved my life. I had encephalitis and was down to less than 90 lbs. was not holding food in any longer and couldn’t stand. Actively dying … and B1 stopped all of this. I had ehler’s danlos and had hit mortality point. I’m slowly healing. Taking high dose copper and minerals and am now around 1200 mgs of B1 per day. As I get better, I can take less and less. But it truly has been a lifesaver. I take hcl type because I’m too sensitive to benfotiamine.
Am I right in assuming, after a little googling that standard B1 is basically Thiamine HCl? I found better results with Benfotiamine for my neuropathy of the feet. Perhaps it works differently with different conditions. What symptoms did you get from Benfotiamine when you mentioned you are too sensitive to it?
Glad you found this. I assume your Doctor did not prescribe

Hi Dr Berg! Thank you for alll your hard work. As a request, can you please do a more extensive analysis of the benefits of rebounding?

Thank you for this insightful information, Dr Berg. I had almost every symptom mentioned and vit B1 is helping me recover significantly. Your advice is always appreciated 🙏🏻💕
How much tiamine did you take?
Thank you, Dr Berg, for the wealth of information that you share with us on daily basis. Thanks to you I have expanded my health related knowledge considerably.
There is one question I wish to ask – my brother had heart operation that resulted in performing 4 bypasses. He recovered amazingly well but is now having problem with his balance. He took Cardio Miracle for some time (nitric oxide) but it resulted in no noticeable change. Is there anything that you would recommend? Vit B1, perhaps?
Thank You Dr. Berg for all your efforts in educating us!
Glad to help!
Amazing health related facts about vitamin B1. It’s helping me recover from dysautonomia/pots due to long covid. Thank you for all your wonderful advice and support, Dr Berg 🙏🏻
Could you please share which brand of b1 and what type ( HCL, benfotiamine) did you take?!
Greatly appreciated 🙏❤😊
In your view, is it long covid or is it “vaccine” effects?
Which one are you taking? Thank you
@@d.tremblay6176 it’s a health problem related fact, not my view. Many people are being diagnosed with Long Covid which is a complex array of different debilitating symptoms where it can last for months or even years, according to the NHS in the UK.
@@lambylambcurly @moniryousefian there are many brands you can find depending on where you are. Amazon has plenty and Dr Berg may have vit B1 as well. Take good care.

A quick note in case it might help some patients….I have read reports that rather than using only one form of B1 (i.e. Thiamine Hydrochloride, Benfotiamine, Allithiamine, TTFD, Sulbutiamine, etc.), a combination of two or more forms taken in divided dosages daily can speed up the healing process. I strongly encourage anyone who discovers they are B1 deficient to also exercise in-home without weights. Lastly, diet is tremendously vital. Being disciplined with your diet WELL BEYOND your peers is simply necessary. The food industry, including the grocery stores, restaurants, convenience stores, and farmers are slowly poisoning everyone, including children. However, we have to take RESPONSIBILITY and ACTION to select the best ingredients available to us. I would recommend inviting more people to view Dr. Berg’s 2024 videos so they can start to get a grasp on just how toxic our lifestyles have become, and what solutions are now available. Good luck!
Correct✅💚
Could you please share which brand of vitamin b1 you’re taking?! Greatly appreciated 🙏
It varies depending on where I travel to and what’s available at any given moment. At this exact moment I only have MK Thiamine HCL and Arcalion Sulbutiamine. Without going into brand names further, my hypothetical preference would be to try a combination of Sulbutiamine, Benfotiamine, and TTFD. In the past I’ve tried Nutritional Yeast and freshly crushed garlic, but both were difficult on my stomach. I even tried Beef Liver, but the taste was revolting. Thiamine HCL also appears to be difficult on my stomach. Important Note: You might need a highly specific Vitamin B COMPLEX in addition to B1, which includes B3 (Niacin). I currently use GENFAR Complejo B. I take 3 tablets a day in divided dosages. @moniryousefian8782
Absolutely agree with you on this, 100%!!!
Is there a supplement you’d recommend that has two or more of these forms of B1?
Dr Berg, your previous videos on the topic saved me from a massive deficiency a year ago. The symptoms were weird and seemingly unrelated (inability to sweat, stumbling, very fast heartbeat, confusion, intolerance for any stress, depression, panic attacks, nightmares, inability to exercise, memory issues, brain fog, loss of muscle mass, shaking, IBS and more). I knew going from specialist to specialist and endless tests would not identify and address the core problem, and would drive me to bankruptcy. I followed your advice. Thank goodness!!! After 10 months of daily 1,500 to 2,000 mg of thiamine and benfotiamine, I am back to feeling human. Dr Berg’s B1 videos saved my health. Forever grateful
It’s incredible isn’t it? 👏🏼 👏🏼
I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety, depression for 35 years and in the last 10 years with fibromyalgia. One year mega dosing b1 with benfotiamine and high dosing D3 with k2. It’s like a whole new me and whole new world. 🙏🏼
Congratulations to you.
Every symptom you mention, EVERY one…was my mother. She found out VERY late in life she was a celiac as well. Also found out our entire family (almost) has different combos of the MTHFR genetic defect. Likely THAT root of all. Must take methylfolicacis. The synthetic is literal poison to us and the reason any flour product causes issues, it’s ADDED to USA flour, per FDA! 🤦♀️🙄🤦♀️
I have all of this right now. Sent hubbie to the store to get some vitamin B. Fingers crossed Dr Berg just saved me too!
@@downunder1988 my personal advice would be to please read up on how to take it and dosing. I have had very little help with a lot of drugstore vitamins. For me, There were a few side effects that seemed like my symptoms were worse. But I vowed to give it at least two weeks. I’m thankful i did. After 3 weeks I increased dosage and again after another 3 weeks. I personally use the benfotiamine kind. Elliot Overton from EONutrition has an amazing mega dose protocol as well as dosing instructions.
Martine, did you just supplement with a multivitamin or get a separate high dose B1?
My youngest daughter died from thiamine deficiency last year, 11/26/2022. She had a massive seizure that caused her brain damage that was irreconcilable. She had no level of thiamine in her system.
So very sorry for your loss
I am so sorry for your loss😢

Thank you, Dr. Berg. This couldn’t be any more timely as I have been dealing with my Dad and diabetic neuropathy related complications. B1 was recommended by a doctor friend as well, and your detailed video answered all my questions. Thank you very much.
As an orthopedic nurse, some of our doctors are now routinely prescribing Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) post surgery. I tell the patients it’s to help them handle the stress of surgery. This video sums up all the post surgical side effects it can help with. We also commonly give this to anyone with history of alcohol abuse, especially if they are likely to be detoxing, for the same reason, trying to eliminate potential symptoms of Thiamine deficiency that they likely have.
Can I ask you, is it safe to take Allithiamine with a separate multivitamin containing all your recommended B1?
I take B1 & Benfotiamine with Thiamine and also started taking 500 mg of V B3/Niacin after watching another Dr. Berg post. I got Hot Flashes, extreme facial flushing and tingling, so tried reducing the amount although even with a very small amount the same thing happens?
Yea i got IV thiamine when I was in detox at the hospital for GHB use
@@kennethrhodes7143niacin is probably what giving you the redness and tingling. It always made me feel and look like I had a sunburn. I’m not a professional but maybe don’t take the niacin 🤷♀️
There is a “non-flushing” niacin that does not cause the same side effects.
Eric is a good man, fantastic teacher, well studied, and the calmest person around. His videos are interesting and put together well so that you gain background information, applications, dosages, examples, etc.
Thank you Dr Berg, B1 was a game changer for me. I used to get deeply depressed like I was carrying around lead weights all the time, it was so debilitating. This supplement lifted that depression so quickly it was like a miracle. I get depressed occasionally now, but it doesn’t have that heaviness and goes away quickly.
@lavenderbee3611 did you also have intrusive thoughts? What kind of b1 you take? Thanks❤
@@stellaancimer8505 Yes, I had intrusive thoughts. I’m taking just regular B1 Thiamin.
