In this video, I’m going to share 15 underlying causes of itching. Pruritus is the medical term for itching. Itching usually involves a superficial nerve that is aggravated to some level.

Here are 15 causes of itching:
1. Body lice
2. Scabies
3. Hookworms
4. Herpes
5. Insect bites
6. Yeast infection
7. Poison ivy
8. Tick bites
9. Diabetes
10. Polycythemia
11. Problems with the parathyroid glands
12. Uremia
13. Liver issues
14. Cholestasis
15. Dry skin

Itching is often a symptom of diabetes because of circulation problems. Poor circulation causes the nerves to die, which can feel like itching or burning pain and even cause severe pain.

Polycythemia is a condition where you have too many red blood cells. This can decrease circulation and the amount of oxygen in your skin, causing itching.

The parathyroid gland consists of 4 glands around the thyroid that control calcium. If the thyroid works too hard, you could develop too much calcium in the blood. This can lead to calcification of your skin, which can affect your nerve endings.

Liver issues like cirrhosis, hepatitis, or cholestasis can cause itching. You can develop cholestasis if the liver’s function is impaired and it can no longer make bile salts.

Dry skin is a common cause of itching, often caused by a lack of vitamin A or vitamin D.

There is a high correlation between people who have itching and people with liver or gallbladder issues. This is typically caused by irritation to the gallbladder and decreased omega-3 fatty acids.

Dietary changes can help eliminate itching. TUDCA, a bile salt that helps thin the bile, has been found to significantly decrease itching in people with cirrhosis.

  1. 00:14 🐜 Itching, medically known as pruritis, can be caused by various factors such as lice, scabies, hookworms, herpes, insect bites, yeast infections, and poison ivy.
01:35 🕵 Tick bites, diabetes, and polycythemia (excess red blood cells) can lead to itching due to issues with circulation, nerve endings, and blood flow.
02:42 🩸 Problems with the parathyroid gland, liver conditions like cirrhosis or hepatitis, and kidney issues (uremia) can contribute to itching, affecting nerve function and skin health.
04:05 💊 Itching may be linked to gallbladder or liver problems, causing irritation and a decrease in omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary changes and bile salt supplementation can alleviate itching associated with liver issues.
05:00 🧠 Scratching an itch stimulates serotonin and dopamine release, providing relief. Understanding the underlying causes of chronic itching is crucial for effective identification and management.

  2. You are such a comedian. Phantom itch is well described and even known to the public. It can occur after amputation of any innervated body part. Among the roughly 60% of women with phantom sensations after mastectomy, itch was the most common.

  3. If the only place you can live has a LOT of mold and you itch all over and wheeze, is there any med or supplement that can help symptoms. The person is homeless and has no other place to go that allows her to bring her pets. The owners allow her to stay for free but don’t want anything done to the room. She and they can’t afford air cleaners or to replace the furniture.

    • Yes I need to know this too! I am stuck somewhere with mold for a while and have horrible skin itching.

    • I found an air cleaner that got excellent ratings for removing mold spores from the air in the size room she is in and I saw it on Amazon for $99. Of course my friend would have to run it often. But the source of the mold is a mattress in the room that someone who isn’t sensitive to mold is sleeping on, and some carpet that needs to be removed. The walls and ceilings need to be painted with special paint to cover the mold and they have been told the flooring needs to be covered with vinyl tiles. The family can’t physically do this themselves and don’t have the funds to have someone do it or buy any air cleaners. It is a sad situation. Also, they don’t want local people to know they are living this way because of what people would think (and there would be critical gossip). If I could afford it I would help but I’m retired and don’t have enough. If I won the lottery…

  4. My back itches. Dry skin. Started getting my husband to put on caster oil. Wonderful stuff.

    • Try about 1/8 to 1/4 added to your 3/4 full shampoo. When you lather and rinse the castor oil will coat literally everything below your head moisturizer the skin.

  5. I am 60 & never fallen ill except for seasonal flu since last 2 yrs; I listen to my body; am a total naughty kid like person(obviously as I’m teaching kids since 43 yrs at home) no addiction except spearmint tea & yes… I’m still healthy(no outside food) YET I hear you read you COZ every word makes sense & awares me ..Thank – you from India with love❤

    Thank you Dr Berg!😺👍

  7. Thank you for sharing another great video Dr Berg. Can you talk about nerve recovery after broken humerus surgery? May God blessed you and your family!

  8. Yeah I suffer from dry skin and to be honest with myself I have a poor diet. I really want to do everything in my power to turn this year around for the better of my health.

  9. I think my problem stems from piercing my ears as a teen. I kept them in way too long, became allergic to the cheap earrings I was wearing, couldn’t afford gold. After this is when I developed a lesion on my face the size of a quarter and had to go to the doctor. Later I developed eczema really bad on my hands. I’ve had itchy problems ever since of one kind or another. The doctor said he had never seen a nickel allergy as bad as mine.

  10. Also, there is the debilitating hyper-thyroid itch. This problem can occur from having either toxic levels of thyroid hormones being produced from the gland and sent throughout the body or having a medication that is too high or has become too high for the body and needs to be readjusted to a lower dose. Otherwise, their could be an issue with the accuracy of a medication itself. If suspected hyperthroid itching occurs, report it and request a lab test to measure the thyroid levels.

  11. Dr., can you do a segment on an enlarged prostate and all the in depth natural treatments that can help this and eliminate
running to the bathroom every few minutes.

  12. I used to work outside a lot in places that crawling with ticks, one day after such a day, when I got home I had over fifty ticks dug into my skin.
I did not get sick or anything like that, but now if a tick gets into my skin, and I do not notice it right off, my immune system kills the tick.

  13. OMGOODNESS! Hair dyes make my head itch so bad. I found someone who uses a more organic color and so happy as I don’t have to go gray🤪I do have itching from time to time but most the time unless it’s a bite not to bad. I use castor oil all over my body now, and it caused some itching on my chest for a while, but no longer👏
