5:10 Top ingredients to avoid

Let’s compare the nutrition facts of Product A and Product B to see which food is healthier. Product A contains 29 grams of total fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 17 grams of carbohydrates, and 1 gram of sugar.

Product B contains 8 grams of total fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, 16 grams of carbohydrates, and 0 grams of sugar. Based on these nutrition facts, which food is healthier?

Product A is an avocado, and Product B is Doritos! Doritos contain corn, vegetable oil, maltodextrin, monosodium glutamate, dextrose, and many other poor ingredients—yet you may have thought Product B was the healthier food.

You can't rely on nutritional facts alone to determine whether a food is healthy; you must look at the ingredients.

Food is “that which is eaten to sustain life, provide energy, and promote the growth and repair of tissues.” Ultra-processed foods do not align with this definition! I believe that of everything that causes disease and destroys your health, ultra-processed foods are the most significant factor.

If you want to know which food is healthy, you should ignore nutrition facts and go right to the ingredients. Here are 3 ingredients you’ll want to avoid:
1. Seed oils
2. All forms of sugar
3. Starches

  1. 00:00 🤔 Nutritional facts alone don’t determine a food’s healthiness.
02:21 🍏 An apple can be healthier than processed foods labeled with better nutritional facts.
03:02 🛑 Ultra processed foods lack essential nutrients due to industrial processing.
04:19 📉 Ultra processed foods are a significant factor in health problems.
05:08 🛒 Focus on ingredients: avoid seed oils, sugars, and starches.

  2. It’s truly amazing how invested you are in educating us to live better healthier lives Dr Berg. My grocery list has completely changed because of your advice. My approach to food and exercise and other things one would never even think about have completely changed.

My optometrist, dentist and general practitioner are impressed when I go for my check ups and my optometrist was so impressed with how my eyes improved after I implemented your advice that he cracked open a notebook and listened to ME giving him advice on eye health instead of the other way around. If it were not for you, I’d probably be overweight, wearing glasses and addicted to energy drinks but today I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for years.

You’re my hero, and the only true doctor in my life.

    • Same here. Where I live, real organic food without all of the extra ultra processed ingredients is actually relatively affordable, so it was an easy change. I was getting really out of shape and had a belly, but after just 3 weeks of taking Dr. Berg’s diet, I lost 20 lbs. and had more energy than I’ve had in years. I also checked out his video on weightlifting and have been doing the single set workouts once a week and now I have a 6-pack. People I work with have made comments to me about how I look great and how even my mental state has improved. Who knew eating right relieves stress, nervousness, and depression? well, I do now.

    • The longer you do it the easier it gets. After a couple of years doing this, fast food and ultra processed foods don’t even sound appetizing anymore, I thank God for that! The few times I’ve tried it in the past over a year ago I could feel the grease coat my mouth, it felt so gross that after a couple of bites I threw it in the trash. I never felt the grease in my mouth before I changed my diet but I do now, stay the course you will get there. For example, I used to love chicken fried chicken and the gravy but when I eat out which isn’t often, I’ll have someone with me who’ll order it, I have no desire for that crap anymore. It’s a nice feeling!

    • @shawnlewis1918 been eating healthy for a year and half, junk food upsets my stomach after eating it. Really weird how the body reacts

    • @@zzygyy Yep….on any given Saturday I will still splurge some on certain things like pizza or higher carb foods but if I over do it I can feel the blood sugar and insulin rising to insane levels where I used could never feel that sensation, it’s like my body has become way more sensitive to junk carbs now so it’s a deterrent from doing it often. Started keto about 3 years ago and switched over the carnivore the last several months, diet has become very simple and easy. Some would say boring but I now crave bacon and pasture raised eggs and juicy marbled red meat with grass fed butter and garlic on it! Not boring at all for me personally. Simple rule is if it doesn’t sound good in the moment then you aren’t really hungry and wait a few more hours, you will know when it’s time to eat when my carnivore items sound good again I know it’s time to consume!

    • I noticed how all the peanuts, Cashews, and other nuts are modified. Either they are roasted, baked in oil, added salt. Or even have Dextrose added to them. Its here in Sweden

    • Not really, he compared 3 servings of avocado to 1 serving of doritos. So it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

Granted I do agree ingredients is a major factor but so are the nutrients. For instance, kale is a far healthier option than iceberg lettuce because there are far more nutrients.

  3. idk man i actually picked A, i thought “daaang what food has all that fat and all that fiber??” i usually count the carbs then substract the fiber

  4. I completely agree with you, Dr Berg. The real problem with food nowadays is “fake and toxic” vs “real and nutritious” where all toxic ingredients are the culprits causing multiple health problems. Thank you 🙏🏻

  5. I read the label and if it contains seed oils, HFCS or added sugars beyond reason or maltodextrin I put it back on the shelf and move on.

    • All food colors are carcinogenic… It was determined so in the 1970s when the FDA was established and advise companies they could not use artificial coloring. The companies merely tweaked the artificial coloring on a molecular level, and kept using them anyway. The chemicals add to shelf life; natural coloring does not.

  6. Thank you for teaching us accurate, authentic and very thoughtful weights of nutritional facts for our health and well-being. Misrepresented and inaccurately weighted facts on what different nutrition’s do to the body abound. Your videos inspire true health, and ease the mind in it’s not so easy pursuit.

    😺👍

  8. DEFINITELY AGREE DR BERG, THESE ARE THE TYPE OF VIDEOS THAT ARE SO EDUCATIONAL, YET THEY’RE NOT IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS ARE THERE NOT TEACHING OUR KIDS LET ALONE PARENTS THIS TYPE OF INFORMATION!!

  9. Also “Flavour enhancers” is another name for MSG. They get away with hiding their crap under other “fancy names” to make it sound “healthy” or pass as “harmless”.

  10. Amazing video and I completely agree with you, Dr Berg. Love the way how you lay out facts and speak out big truths. Thanks for your daily contribution and helpful advice.

  11. Thank you Dr Berg for another great video of such important facts that we all need to know. I will be sharing this ASAP.

  12. What upsets me is even after you cut out junk food, processed food, now we are dealing with produce coated in Apeel or pesticides, produce grown with 75% less nutrients than their ancestors just 30 years ago, animals fed wheat and given medicines, PFAS in every single thing we eat, grow, drink and breathe, and now we have to fight foods that are grown in labs like cheese and meat! We can’t win!

  13. An easy way to shop is :
Shop the perimeter of the store, fresh produce,meat/seafood, dairy. Stay away from anything in a package or box except frozen vegetables and fruit.

  14. Dr. Berg, I am so happy to hear you getting the word out about the horrid condition of our food supply. What we have is quite the trifecta of agriculture, food manufacturing, and medical/pharmaceuticals all profiting from our nutrition ignorance…

The other thing to avoid are “calories” to describe food energy… A calorie is a unit of heat as measured by a b*mb calorimeter and as you know, that’s not how our bodies metabolize food… the whole idea of the energy balance concept (CICO) is a wrong-headed approach this and we need a better system… The Calorie has to go… I no longer use it or the term.
