Should you eat protein bars as part of a healthy diet? Let’s look at popular protein bar ingredients and see why you might want to avoid them altogether.

0:00 Introduction: Are protein bars healthy?
0:57 CLIF Builder's protein bars
2:45 CLIF chocolate chip energy bars
4:27 KIND protein bars
5:21 Quest birthday cake bar
6:26 Pure Protein bars
7:45 ONE protein bars
8:38 MET-Rx protein bars
9:42 One of the most surprising protein bars to avoid

Today, I’m going to compare the ingredients of popular protein bars, but first, let’s compare a Snickers bar to a protein bar! A 50-gram Snickers bar contains 30 grams of carbs and is about 58% sugar.

CLIF Builder's protein bars are 68 grams and are about 41% sugar, with the same number of carbohydrates as Snickers. The extra carbs in the CLIF bar come from starches that quickly turn into sugar in the blood. CLIF Builder's bars contain 20 grams of protein but in the form of soy protein concentrate, a low-quality protein. Like most protein bars, they're also full of ultra-processed ingredients.

CLIF energy bars are 68 grams and 55.88% sugar. Despite their name, they will not give you sustainable energy, just a tiny spike followed by a crash.

KIND bars make several claims, such as “#1 ingredient=heart healthy peanuts," “low glycemic index,” “dairy-free,” and “non-GMO.” They contain glucose syrup, which is not a low-glycemic-index ingredient, along with sugar, honey, palm oil, soy protein isolate, and chicory root fiber.

Quest birthday cake bars contain 9 grams of sugar alcohol, which can lead to GI problems like gas, bloating, and diarrhea. They’re 41% sugar and also contain polydextrose, which hasn’t been studied much in humans.

Pure Protein bars claim to have only 2 grams of sugar, but they contain 17 grams of carbohydrates and only 1 gram of fiber. These bars contain 14 grams of starches, equivalent to 4 more teaspoons of sugar!

The ONE protein bar is a 60-gram product containing 20 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar, but it has 25 grams of carbs from starches and cellulose, which is essentially sawdust. It also contains maltitol, an ingredient you’ll want to avoid.

The MET-Rx meal replacement bar contains 48 grams of carbohydrates and ingredients such as rice starch, maltitol syrup, corn syrup, fructose, and soy protein isolate.

Next, let’s look at the ingredients of an A.M. RXBAR. They contain 10 grams of protein, oats, cashews, egg whites, and honey. However, the front label is misleading because these bars contain several other ingredients, 52% of which are sugar.

  1. Dean Wharmby, a bodybuilder who died because of liver cancer, blamed protein bars for triggering his cancer before his death. I guess Andy Whitfield and Chadwick Boseman were also victims of their bodybuilding supplements, since those products are highly processed

    • It’s highly probable yeah. I’m constantly telling people not to eat protein bars unless they’re made by themselves or they can guarantee what’s in it is good, and you’d be shocked how many people will defend that protein bars are good for you. Even though most aren’t! Anyways, keep slaying. 👊

    • Protein bars and powders are so unregulated. A lot of them come with a proposition 65 warning on the fine print, as there are heavy metals in addition to all the artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols.

Unfortunately I developed a pretty gnarly and persistent IBS condition that I might have for life, and I’m pretty sure that years of consuming these artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols had something to do with it

    • The best protein source for muscle building is, and has always been, EGGS. Pasture raised chicken or duck eggs from small farms, if possible.

    • @@lars2894 the best protein source in general is eggs yeah you’re right. They have all the fat soluble vitamins in the yolk and all of the b vitamins you need. Plus good cholesterol which is responsible for helping clear your arteries!

    • Agreed. I learned so much about eric berg watching a video called the scariest “doctor” on youtube

    • Technically, cooked food is a type of processed food. You know, homemade stew and such. Don’t be so nitpicky on that. It gives a wrong picture of processing food while not being a bad thing at all. Ultra processed food just so happens is the food with all the bad stuff in it per definition. You can’t avoid having something bad in a mixture when putting like 100s ingredients in it.

    • Why I may eat some protein bars and maybe a candy bar every once in a while but both well more on the go or traveling cause all the fast food ist really good for any one either but again every once in a while but not all the time is best to eat any as some say carbs they can’t but I feel they never wanted to proportion it don’t indulge in carbs ,sweets , protein bars, candy bars but eat amount of 2 flat bread or well 1 donut or 1 croissant in morning or first wake up with yur coffee or tea or what ever you like drinking but if is soda proportion that drink more water in between soda
But yes some of my habits were not great but am trying to improve yrs I binge some but we are human and well have all sorts of cravings but proportion yur cravings too

    • Interesting fact: the Arabic verb “istatabba” (استطب) means “he asked for a medicine”. This is so aesthetic that this can be said in just 1 verb in Arabic. Learn Arabic good-wise! There are lots of interesting verbs and words in Arabic! In addition, Arabic is very good for the brain!

  2. They are all junk, worse than I thought! You might as well just have a candy bar. Whole foods are what your body needs. This is part of the problem that is contributing to obesity and poor health in North America.

  3. That’s why I don’t do sugar or most artificial sweeteners. After watching a keto recipe video and hearing how erythritol causes bloating, IM GOOD! I accidentally thought Mrs. Karen Berg was Leah Remini ❤ LOL! Man, do I feel good this morning! Have a great day, y’all! 🙂

  4. It fills my heart with glee to cheat with a huge king size Snickers occasionally but I know it’s for my mental health and a tasty treat lol. You are on point re: “healthy”protein bars – daily candy is a bad idea.

    • Me too. Last night I had a 220 calorie Cadbury bar (the small slim ones) for the first time in a long time. I usually have them on Friday with movie night after my supper. Having a portion of almonds with it is so freaking good lol.
But yeah, if a person were to eat candy or protein bars daily, it’d be a concern. I used to.

  5. I’ve been told for years. There is be no attorneys or dentists in heaven. Marketing departments can be added to the list. Marketers lie more than attorneys and dentists combined!

  6. In my ignorant 30s I used to eat a Snickers bar and a can of Pepsi at 3pm when I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Those days are long gone. Sweets are just a memory for me now. 🎉😊

    • Me too! The 3 pm crash 😂 , I used to change up the Pepsi for Dr. Pepper every couple of days, just for variety.

    • Are you happy? I really need to know because I love sweets soooooo much and I’m not just having a hard time giving it up, but I also am afraid when I don’t crave it anymore I’ll feel like “what do I look forward to now?”

    • Replace those processed sugars with natural sugars from fruits. I use to crave sugar, now i hardly eat anything with added sugar @789genie

    • “when I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills.” Bragging to strangers on the internet. Sorry for your downfall.

  7. Definitely agree. I used to eat those protein bars. Big time bloating, cramps, and gas on me. Listen to your gut. It’ll tell you what’s healthy. Various meats and small portions of vegetables and fruits are what work for me. No bathroom issues at all. No more belly fat either.

  8. I miss my life as a kid where my father didn’t even let us eat cucumbers in the winter because it’s un naturally grown.
Now everything we eat is junk.

    • I am 56 and went back to those days as I have got insulin resistance. It seems I am getting rid of many diseases now

    • @@whoknows8223 when i said junk i didn’t mean fast food and snacks bit i meant the healthy option i had as a kid isn’t available anymore, where we used to eat almost everything from local farms and if something was not in its season like some vegetables in the winter, we didnt eat it because it was considered unhealthy.
Now everything we eat is from the supermarket unfortunately.

    • @@MSkh-bo5rx yeah I totally get it. I envy the people who can get fresh local veggies and fruits from the market. In Germany there are mostly only potatoes, onions and apples. Some berries for 1-2 months. That’s it mostly. When I was on vacation on thailand all I drank were fresh pressed( in front of your eyes cut and pressed) mango, ananas, watermelon juices for 1,50$ per 300ml.

  9. Maybe a video on how Starbucks is not actually a coffee shop but in reality a coffee based liquid cake shop?

    • Dutch Brothers the same. I call it a liquid donut shop and the last three I have seen go up are probably strategically very close to schools (one middle school, one high school and one college).
