Today, we’re going to talk about edema causes and remedies. Swollen legs are often a symptom of edema and are typically blamed on liver, kidney, or heart problems.

Did you know that edema and pitting edema may be able to be fixed without a blood thinner or diuretic?

Water retention in the lower legs is caused by a problem with the sodium-potassium pumps in your cells. If these pumps aren’t working correctly, water retention outside the cells, known as interstitial fluid retention, will occur.

When you have swollen ankles, it’s usually the result of high blood sugar connected to the hemoglobin protein in your blood. This is called glycation, which inhibits the blood cell’s ability to carry nutrition and oxygen throughout the body. Glycated proteins can also block circulation, leading to swollen legs and swollen ankles.

High blood sugar causes sodium retention, which also contributes to water retention. Over time, this can affect the nerves in the bottom of the feet, causing numbness and tingling, known as peripheral neuropathy. Even if you don’t yet have diabetes, edema can be caused by high blood sugar.

To help eliminate edema, you must ensure you’re getting plenty of potassium, which can be difficult to achieve through diet alone. The average person needs 4700 mg of potassium daily! Avocados, salads, and berries can help you meet this requirement.

You also need plenty of magnesium to help eliminate edema. Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and leafy greens are good sources of magnesium. Aim for 420 mg of magnesium daily. High-quality electrolyte powder without hidden sugars can help increase potassium and magnesium intake.

Vitamin B1 deficiency is likely behind issues with the sodium-potassium pump. For sugar to be turned into usable energy in the body, you need vitamin B1. Consuming too many refined carbohydrates can cause a vitamin B1 deficiency.

Vitamin B1, potassium, and magnesium can help eliminate edema, but you must also eliminate sugar from your diet.

    • I added B vitamins among others, but cutting all carbs and increasingly going into carnivore and my edema is now minimal if at all. I sit at a desk all day. I do still usually wear compression sox, but not on my days off. There is just scant edema now.

    • I don’t get swollen ankles nor do my legs get swollen but if I lay down with my legs up they tend to start getting tingling sensation and my feet for some reason start getting stiff. I do take magnesium and nutritional yeast along with a trace mineral liquid but it doesn’t seem to help. It could be my medication since I am a type 2 diabetic I’m taking ozempic and I’m taking metformin 2000 mg I’m not sure if that’s causing my issue but I’ve had those feelings and my legs for as long as I can remember. Even as a teenager I used to get that. I was diagnosed that too when I was 45 years old

  2. Some people hate that I’ve been blessed to often be able to pinpoint exactly what “it” truly is when dealing with drug-related edema. I get called every name under the sun for not having a medical license, but still fighting for those I care for. 😂 Oh well, won’t stop me. Stay strong, people, and have a wonderful day!

    • Some people can’t be helped cuz they don’t want it, they didn’t ask for it. I have edema at only 43 years old and I watched my mother die from it at 44. Her legs, no her calves blew up from about 20 inches to 50 inches in just 6 months. It was scary, traumatizing even. So like you I am very Intune with my own body and what works for me and I tried offering what I have learned (unwanted advice) to other woman, since my mother didn’t know what to do and now I do. But Older woman who are like 75 year olds, look at me, at my age and think.. “you don’t know what your talking about.” and quickly dismiss anything I say about it LOL so ofc they don’t wanna listen.. they also never asked

    • @@jacquiewiegand6323 How she died from Edema? SMH. It was probably kidney failure or cognitive heart diseases.

    • Magnesium Citrate/Gluconate 120 mg 3x daily

Potassium – take yogurt, banana, pineapple, or electrolyte drink/capsule

Benfotiamine 300 mg with Virgin Coconut Oil capsules

    • @@GenevieveBarker-pw7dr Magnesium glycinate is very well absorbed and is a better price when you look at how much you have to take of the others… 320 mg for women 420 mg for men… A little more won’t hurt.

  3. If you have been not exercising most of your life you will get old quickly, I just got back from a brisk 5 mile walk, and when I see people much younger than I you can see the weakness is already there, so strengthen your leg muscles and feel much better, and pump that oxygen around your body cleaning your vital organs, I’m 74 and you can do it.

    • Exactly. People don’t realize that it’s as simple as that. Go for a walk after a meal. 10 minutes minimum to whatever max. Ez

    • I agree the young people today, lot of them are in very poor shape. Can’t imagine what they will be like if they even live past 60.
I am older and don’t have any health issues, don’t need medication, don’t even see doctors as I don’t trust them anyway. Eating healthy and exercise, keeping the weight down pays off in the long run. I can’t even imagine being old and sick, scary.

    • Im 28 and i second you with your statement, exercise or simply movement and staying actis is imperative, the lymphatic system can drain only by muscle movement.

  4. I have heard of the words glycation and A1C, but I never really understood what they actually are – thank you for the wonderful way you explained them and more 🙌🏼❤️💪🏼

  5. want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication and compassionate care. Thank you for being an exceptional doctor 🙏World need you

  6. I have this very same problem with my ankles, and my doctor never, ever mentioned any of this to me. Wow! What a way to keep me coming back to the doctor. Mind-blowing and sad!! Thanks to Dr. B For always providing such amazingly enlightening info.

  7. Wow! I am a juvenile diabetic, and this is the first time ever that a doctor has explained high blood sugar so well. I learned some things I’ve never been told.

  8. I had edema for a couple of months but only in one leg which was very strange and doctors had no idea what was causing it. I was taking all my vitamins, including b1, was healthy and working out, xrays done – nothing wrong with the tissue in the leg! But continual swelling!! The only thing that made it stop and quickly – was cutting out carbohydrates. Mind you i was eating healthy carbs in a healthy balanced diet. Only cutting out carbs worked for me. Im in my second carb free week now. I cant believe how fast my body resolved the problem once i gave it a break from the carbs.

    • Congrats- I too need to stop the carbs, when I reduce the amounts of pasta I feel better, butter can’t seem to quit. Starting Sept. 1st I’ll stop completely- I’m proud that I quite Pepsi about nine months.

    • I had the opposite happening… tried to go carnivore for healing, and both of my legs swelled up, and I even got a terrible rash…. had to go back to low carb, and now I am going slowly as oxalate dumping was hurting me.

  9. Having jumped off the Good Health wagon in order to bake and devour rich apple pies which led to tubs of ice cream and then lazily got re-addicted to cookies – now this good inspiring health advice has come at a critical pivotal moment.
Now it’s time to go cold turkey on the sugar & bread . . . again!!

    • It might work better for you to gradually reduce, so that you don’t get overwhelming/irresistible cravings and end up worse off then when you started

    • There are supplements that will help you wean from your cravings. And I got a chuckle from your post, very accurate. I go on and off that wagon too

    • I struggled still with keto, any carbs caused cravings. I recently went to full carnivore and stopped diet soda. I have no carb cravings now. I just have to be totally free of carbs to control the cravings. it feels so good. Odd, my first benefit from going carnivore was my vision improved. Colors are brighter, weird.

  10. Thiamine made a huge difference in my recovery! I was hospitalized due to RSV and severe asthma attack and when I was discharged home, I could not get any energy. The day I added the thiamine to my diet, it made a huge impact in my recovery and I take this miracle every day now

  11. I’m a nurse, and this explanation of the condition of diabetes is EXCELLENT! -simple and to the point. Thanks doc-I’m going to share this video with a lot of people. God bless you!

  12. I wish my parents would believe this. They both could benefit from every word you just said. I’m going to send it to them in hopes they listen. Thank you!
