In this video, we’re going to talk about a dangerous ingredient that’s making you fat and damaging your health. The FDA classifies this ingredient as GRAS, which means “generally recognized as safe.”
Monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG, is a flavor enhancer. Studies have shown that it causes obesity, diabetes, metabolic problems, and a fatty liver in mice, so how can it be safe for humans?
Monosodium glutamate overstimulates a part of the hypothalamus that regulates the balance of hunger and satiation. It prevents the utilization of energy and also affects fertility. The average daily consumption of MSG is 590 mg to 2330 mg. Some people consume up to 5000 mg in one day! Consuming carbs and MSG together accentuates its effects.
Not only does MSG contribute to obesity, but it may also cause headaches, allergy symptoms, irritability, sleeping problems, and dizziness.
Many people consume hidden MSG unknowingly. If there’s less than half a gram of MSG in a product, it’s not required to be listed as an ingredient!
Foods high in monosodium glutamate include the following:
•Instant noodles
•Chips
•Flavored popcorn
•Canned soups
•Bouillon cubes
•Processed meat
•Fast food
•Seasonings
•Salad dressings
•Frozen dinners
•Gravy
•Appetizers
•Flavored crackers
•Canned vegetables

Oh that stuff messes me up bad!! Bloating like CRAZY, headaches, migraines, NO SLEEP.
After a Chinese takeaway, waking up at 3am dying of thirst.
ive used msg in basically every meal for the past 5 years. Not a single negative side effect. Like he said, the science of it is all based on causation. Every *good* scientist knows that studies based on causation are almost useless. It’s like saying ‘every time i go to the store i fall, so going to the store is resulting in me falling” while not tying your laces every time when you go to the store.
I do agree that it makes food taste better, making it more addicting, resulting in all kinds of issues. But the same can be said for all things that ‘feel/taste good’. Therefore it’s a tricky thing. When people bring up these arguments i always tell them to find research that *PROVES* the claims. Well, there aren’t any. Does that disprove/proof anything? No.. It just means there’s not enough evidence to make claims..
Exactly especially the migraines.
We all need to understand our bodies and know when something is not normal. The body has a way of warning us of danger.
@@yama4ever Well. Good for you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Ok. Here’s my claim…..I don’t NEED anyone telling me “Well the science says….” I listen to what my BODY says, I always have and always will. If it happens once, it might be a fluke, if it happens twice, it’s questionable, if it happens every time, wouldn’t you say that’s proof? Not everyone’s body chemistry is the same. Not everyone reacts to everything the same way, regardless if it’s emotional, mental, physical. Trial and error…if you can think for yourself and connect the dots yourself, then why should someone else have to TELL you otherwise?

Hidden MSG in ingredients. Pretty scary. Good points Dr. Berg. We seriously have to stay away from processed foods and most packaged stuff and go fresh and natural. I’ve really improved my shopping list in the last 5 years. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!
I found out about the danger of MSG many years ago, but I wonder why Asians that use MSG don’t get fat?
One of the reasons why MSG food is addicting is to consume. Just look at any Chinese fast food. There is almost no commercial to promote eating there. But other Mainstream fast food like McDonald’s have to spend millions on Advertising.

Drink more water!!!
My flavour enhancer of choice is … salt !
Can’t beat it.
Same here and for me black pepper as well.
Celtic salt.
Salt will always win. But msg is 2nd
Celtic salt and SEA Salt!! Not table salt!!
If you use celtic salt or sea salt it has all the minerals including 3 forms of magnesium. There is a video here on YT about the real causes of high BP and that was it… very low magnesium salts and the body trying to forcibly hydrate them.
I would love Dr. Berg to do an interview with RFK and also one with Calley and Casey Means
MSG is “safe” the same way “sugar is safe”, “alcohol is safe”, “eating bricks is safe”
Bricks???
Also, much of our chromium picolinate was removed from soil
That’s the mineral, which stops sweet tooth

On 4th of July of this year, I realized I was getting too big. I was 270lbs, the first time I ever reached that weight in life. My normal weight is around 170lbs. Once I realized it’s the extra fat creating chemicals in on our bodies that causes a lot of health problems, I decided to fight my sugar cravings. I went back to controlling my portion size, intermittent fasting and eventually 1 a day meals and I’m down to 230lbs. Hopefully I’ll be back to 170lbs by this time next near.
Self discipline
I’m on the same journey as you! I’m down 22lbs I have 23lbs to go to be under 200lbs. I plan to achieve this by the new year. Keep seating small goals for yourself. The big picture seems overwhelming. We can do this!
It took you a hundred pounds overweight to “realize” you were fat? 🙄

For two weeks now I’ve been eating real foods, I avoided ultraprocessed foods and wow, my body feels lighter, I have mental clarity and I feel like all my cells are fueled and active. I’m not going back to eating ultraprocessed foods anymore, after learning so much about how they impact our metabolic health, I feel disgusted and scared at the same time. I’ve lost my gallbladder already and I know what it feels like to be really sick. Thank you Dr Berg!
I pray you continue to be so healthy that brings you a lot of joy.
Eat healthy, exercise, take vitamin tabs and baby aspirin, eat fermented food such as Sauerkraut & kimchi, take one spoon of extra virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar, drink kefir and matcha green tea and sleep well. That’s what I’ve done and just celebrated my 80th birthday lately. 😊😊😊

I don’t eat in restaurants because of seed oils and MSG. Dr. Berg is our hero!
AMIN, right spot on.
I do eat in restaurants, but I have noticed a big difference in how much I can eat versus at home. Only very small amounts, or else the rest of the day is a bust because I don’t feel well and I’m very sleepy or sluggish. Seed oils may be a part of that, but I was using them at home until somewhat recently. MSG could be part of it.
@@joanl.7543seed oil is the worst.. cook with real butter and extra virgin oil… Also read ingredients
Don’t crave heroes..
My Grandmother didn’t eat in restaurants or take out either way B4 this information was prevalent. She would always say “U don’t know what they put in the food.” RIP Nanny.
During my college years, I suffered from debilitating migraines with the “aura”, body tingles (facial, forearm, fingertips) & at times would even have paralysis on one side of the face. I kept having to drop my classes bc I could not get out of bed for at least 24 hours and then deal with brain fog for the next 24 hours! By the time I felt normal again and went back to classes, I’d get hit with ANOTHER migraine! The nightmare would start ALL over again. The moment I’d see the aura I’d sob bc I knew the world of pain I was going to have to endure. I finally got to see a neurologist and aside from doing a CT scan and a battery of tests to rule out any other concerns, he first asked me to break down my daily routine and write down everything my diet consisted of. I was a full time student and worked part time just outside of campus so I was always on the go and made sure to map out specific walking routes where with my favorite food vendors. My typical diet consisted of Breakfast: Spinach, egg, ham & cheese “quiche”. Lunch: Italian (anything savory red or white sauce, dry meat and salad with “seasoned” croutons. Dinner: Any Chinese dish as long as it had my favorite “soy sauce”! 🤔 Annnnd this is when my neurologist introduced me to the evils of MSG!!!”. The second I removed this toxin from my diet, I went from 8-12 migraines a month to maybe 1-2 a YEAR! The occasional migraine would occur when I accidentally would eat something that contained msg. Like canned soup, Doritos or Chex mix.
Unfortunately they disguise msg under different names but eating clean and keto steers me clear of these toxins. Plus, before I started eating clean, I learned to detect when a food contained MSG by either placing a tiny piece on the tip of my tongue or smelling of it while it’s cooking…like Roman noodles or onion soup mix. My automatic response is when my eyes and mouth begin to water a bit and this feeling of bizarre feeling of euphoria, which I used to think was funny but now I’m realizing how that gets people addicted to these foods!
Nailed it!
A few of my coirkers get migraines and I suggest they stop eating processed foods. It goes in one ear and out the other.
Very good info. Thanks!
@@Contrarian-ol2bc oh boy! I was so desperate that I was willing to try ANYTHING to make that pain go away! As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. me too.
One and only.
For people with hypertension and high blood pressure, using a moderate amount of MSG instead of sodium heavy salt., since MSG contains only about a quarter of the sodium than regular salt.. Use a moderate amount of MSG instead of salt.
Moderation is the key.
To anyone with migraines – my uncle’s STOPPED when he stopped MSG! Life changer.
I knew it was MSG. Gives me a horrible headache. We sprinkled it in the salad years ago when we set up the Salad Bar at the Holiday Inn. Just didn’t seem right to me even then. (80s)
@@sewndebisdream6953 knowledge is power but since it’s in SO many foods, it’s very difficult to avoid. BTW- I used to often eat from the (delicious!) HI salad bar🤦♀️
