Many people think they need to avoid ultraviolet radiation—their first thought may even be that it causes cancer. Today we're going to talk about the potent anti-inflammatory effects of UV radiation and its other benefits.

UV radiation is a part of the spectrum of energy from the sun. Humans have adapted over time to survive the sun's radiation and use it to our advantage.

Ultraviolet radiation is the only part of the sun's energy that helps the body make vitamin D, which is essential. Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for your immune system and is an incredibly potent anti-inflammatory.

While chronic exposure to UV radiation is unhealthy and can increase your risk of certain skin cancers, it may have significant health benefits in small doses.

Too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation can also cause wrinkles, loss of collagen, and aging spots. But having enough antioxidants in your skin may help protect you from these issues.

      why do they tell us it’s bad for us, and tell us to put chemicals on our skin to”protect “ us

    • @Alyce P. The sun’s rays are getting stronger everyday since Dec 21. Jun 21 is the peak. Can’t wait till beginning of Spring through end of Summer. Best time of the year, IMO.

    • @Alyce P. i been thinking of building a lamp that has little bit of uv light too but it will probably take until next year to get it finished cus i have to do some tests to make sure it is safe. 🙂

    • i have auto immune lupus , and the only thing that turns lupus joint pain inflammation on ALOT more than diet is the sun UV .. : the worst thing i deal with .
      Conflicting info on lupus and rheumatoid arthritis diets ect are starting to drive me batty ~ In people with lupus, UV exposure can trigger not only worsening of skin lupus and other types of photosensitivity, but also activation and worsening of systemic symptoms—including joint pain and kidney disease. UV radiation is classified by wavelength—the distance between the peaks in a series of waves of light. ANNND : Nitrous Oxide is also implicated in LUPUS FLARES , as such from arginine ect . This was the worst vid i have seen from DR berg .

  2. Remember that our planet’s electro- magnetic field has changed since we were kids and will continue to do so making exposure doses need to be adjusted.

  3. When Dr. Berg talked about living in higher latitudes and the causation of cancer and cardiovascular disease, it make sense when people prefer to go south during winter months. The sun does improve moods.

    • People visiting South Africa and elsewhere in Africa assume that our generally cheerful demeanour is mainly cultural. Even poor people smile often and strangers tend to be very chatty and sociable with one another. I suspect the enormous amount of sunlight contributes to the robust and resilient physical as well as mental health of people. The morbidity rate from Covid was far below the global average in spite of poor public health care and slow-low inoculations.
      In winter I can feel my body craving extra time outdoors being as used to so much summer sun as it is. Thanks for all your great work in educating millions about their own pathway to better health, doc !

  6. I live in NE Ohio right on Lake Erie. I believe 100 % on this. We are always cloudy in the winter. We get very depressed, low energy but days we see the sun it’s glorious. There is a lot of thyroid disease and thyroid cancer in our area. Thank goodness I’m ketovore ( more carnivore days) which gets me through this lack of sun. I am also on prescription vitamin D as over the counter did not raise my levels. 50,000 twice a week. I am 67 and thankfully do well. Thanks for this information.

  7. We are made of light. “They” tell us the sunlight is bad for us because it’s very healing! Sunlight, water, breath, food and love are basic to our healthfulness.

I just got a burn on my wrist from welding and my instructor told us that the arc produces UV-C rays which makes it more intense than the UV from the sun, since the rays filters out the UV-C through the atmosphere. It definitely looks pretty gnarly to say the least compared to previous sunburns I’ve had.

  9. Thank you Dr.Berg for sharing this very helpful information. People think I am nuts because I’m a SUNGAZER. I use the safe method called HRM method.
    My vision improved enough that my prescription actually changed. It went from a -7.75 prescription to -5.5.
    I also have chronic pain from a genetic dis-ease called X-Linked vitamin d resistant Rickets …. The sun hps tremendously. I love how you always remind people how important Vitamin D is.

    • We need to be sun adapted to be able to spend hours and hours in the sun. The majority can’t do this because their bodies have an aversion to the sun. We need to build up tolerance to it by spending more and more time in the sun. I’m starting with ten minutes eah day.

    • @Erin Kaleel  Do it closest to sunrise/sunset.

      Like, literally…find a spot where you have a clear view of the sun either rising or setting beyond the horizon and watch that, directly, for ~5-10 mins or however much you can tolerate.

      That’s when you’re least likely to experience any sensitivities to the light.

  10. This is so true, Dr. Berg. Since I started using the Sperti vit D lamp in winter, it has made a huge difference to my energy levels, and aches and pains have virtually vanished. We get very little proper sunshine in winter/spring in NW Europe.

    • I am very curious also. 10 years ago I was trying to move a desk by myself, it’s extremely heavy, and I injured my leg. An acupuncturist in my office building, treated it with light, first ultraviolet, and then near infrared I could not believe it I did not get a bruise although I was guessing I would have one 8 inches across. All I got was a pale yellow splotch.

  12. I was curious as to whether uv rays go through window glass, and after a quick search, by no means thorough, it seems that UVA does, but UVB does not go through glass. So, for those who spend most of their time indoors, and I’m thinking about senior citizens, particularly in nursing homes, etc. I’m guessing it’s important for people to know that sitting by a window in the sunshine is not going to supply vitamin D. Is this correct?

  13. Thank you for this video, I suffered from eczema all year last year, the worst outbreak I’ve ever experienced, I tried absolutely everything and nothing worked. Flew down to Mexico for a week and it was completely healed in 4 days. I needed an explanation and this was it, I’m making it imperative that I take at least one trip a year now. Thanks Dr!

  14. Thank you Dr. B. for straightening out the UV controversy for me. I’m 84 with mobility issues and live in snow country so rarely get out. I’m going to look for the proper lamp to use until I can get out again. I’ll get one also for a relative who has dementia and experiences sundowning….I’ve heard that it helps. ❤️

There’s also a “interesting” relation of a huge soar of down syndrome (autoimune disease) and people evading the sun (especially the mothers/pregnant mothers and the kids after being born and raised to when the down syndrome may strongly manifest itself) , as if, it’s battery acid or something like that.
    And, yes, the relation is based on D.S cases every “X” amount of people.

  16. I am 70, live in WA state, and have been sunbathing for at least an hour a few times a week…no burning. It totally made me feel great and I plan on doing it for the rest of my life. I also take vitamin D3 everyday..10,000Iu’s. I also take antioxidants before and after my sun exposure. I have not been sick since I got the flu in 2019.

  17. Doctor Berg are UV-B lamps any good for wintertimes? Do they have similiar/same benefits? Is it better than taking Vitamin D pills?

    • There is always a misunderstanding about UVB reptile heating bulbs, especially in winter. The illuminance factor of 5.0, 8.0 or 10.0 are all approximate ranges only. It is important to note that the illuminance factor is that the light must not be obstructed by anything. For example, the illuminance of a reptile heating bulb is 5.0, people think it should be on for 8 hours. But if there is a shield, even 80 hours of projection will not have any effect and will also reduce the life of the lamp

  18. I had bad eczema when I was really little. I remember itching so bad I cried. When I went outside in the sun to play, the itching would go away. I knew even as a child the sun was helping me. Was treated in my teens for a massive breakout of eczema on my scalp and neck with uv light. It worked! Thanks for the information… good to know.

    • Look up micro biome imbalance and gut dysbiosis. You may have Candida and or sibo. These are the cause of eczema. My eczema was awful. It’s better now.

  19. Dr Berg, I’ve been using the sunshine and your high doses of Vitamin D with K2. My most recent blood tests showed very elevated Vitamin D levels: 120. This is a first in my entire life as I’ve always been low with Vitamin D. I also had good thyroid levels for the first time (I think thanks to Healthy Keto & Tudca and the relationship with thyroid and liver/gallbladder). Many things to celebrate. However my doctor found lumps in my breasts and I will soon get more imaging (the first mammogram showed just a concern with one breast). Now I’m hoping and praying that I have too much calcium in my breasts from too much Vitamin D 🙏🏽 I’m hoping all my Vitamin D is protective. But I have had a worry that just because my blood level of Vitamin D was high…. Is my body actually able to use it? I will get more blood tests soon and I’ll see show my vitamin d changed after not taking it for awhile. Anyhow, hoping for the best and come summer 2023, I know I’ll be out absorbing the sun with my shirt off for short stints.

    • Be sure to take vitamin k2 mk7 with your vitamin d to put the calcium into your bones. If you have calcium in your breast take stone breaker.

    • Sodium nitrate ( found in cheese) can cause cancer. I have a calcium and magnesium powder that I use. I don’t eat dairy products and processed meats with nitrate preservative.

    • Not sure how much D you have been taking, but you can do a lot of damage if it’s too much. Calcium in the breasts in the form of microcalcifications is not really a good thing either.

    • Dr berg uses stuff in his that helps absorb better, there is only toxicity in levels when taking over 200,000 iu per day for several months I reversed a lot of issues with it at 40,000 units a day
