Today I’m going to share the best remedies to help stop teeth grinding at night.

Grinding your teeth can lead to issues like:
• Excessive wearing of the teeth
• Teeth pain
• Headaches
• Jaw spasms

People who smoke, drink alcohol, or take SSRIs have a higher risk of teeth grinding (bruxism).

There are a few things involved in teeth grinding at night, but it seems to be largely related to the autonomic nervous system.

Bruxism is also associated with a certain variation in genetics. The gene involved is the receptor gene for serotonin. If you have this variation, you’ll have to work harder to increase the precursors of serotonin to help build it up.

Bruxism can also be triggered by various things, including:
• Stress events
• Trauma
• Excess caffeine consumption

The best natural remedies for teeth grinding:
1. Vitamin B1 (nutritional yeast)
2. Vitamin D3

    😺👍

  2. I was grinding my teeth since early teens, and waking myself and rest of house up. I’ve cracked teeth in my sleep and they are worn. There is a book, 6 foot tiger in a 3 foot cage, that is interesting reading. It talks about how the mouth is too small for the tongue and when you sleep, the tongue blocks your airways and the body thinks it’s suffocating. Since getting my braces 1 1/2 yrs ago to expand my jaw, I haven’t had a night sweat and stopped grinding my teeth. Breathe Right air strips are a quick fix to help open airway in your nose.

  3. I had a version of bruxism pretty violently actually. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it was it was so bad it felt like I got punched in the head all night long.
At that time I was drinking a lot of mountain dew. This is about 8 years ago. When I went keto The chopping of teeth at night vanished. I do drink a lot of coffee so in my case it wasn’t the caffeine that was causing it.

  4. Good Morning , Dr.Berg 🌞
Thank you so much for sharing your Knowledge with everyone .
Have a good day, God bless you !

  5. I have bruxism and do not drink alcohol, smoke, etc. I did test low for D3 and have started a regimen. I have a plastic piece I wear and no longer have teeth pain. Kudos to my dentist who discovered this as I would wake up and have bitten the inside of my cheek. Thanks for addressing this condition. Self education is necessary for taking care of the mind body and spirit!

    • I also have this problem when I suffered sinus infection for almost a year, constantly wake up during the nights and I’ve bitten n chewed the inside of my cheek..I also suffered severe dry mouth..Thanks to my dentist she recommended me to see specialist doctor n found out that I have chronic sinus infection..The infection now gone n all the dry mouth, biting, chewing inside cheek n bruxism stop

  6. I have been bruxjng for the last 40 years of my life. I am now 53. My jaw muscles are like steel. I can bite thru cables that hold up bridges! 😁
My teeth are slightly damaged, I do wear a splint most nights.
I hope these remedies help me, and if it does work, I will personally fly over to the US, and shake your hand, Dr. Berg. Who am I kidding, I’ll hug you and kiss you on the face! 😘

  7. I remember my niece when she was about 4-5 yrs old would always grind her teeth. Her deciduous teeth were worn down flat and when her permanent teeth came in they were severely crowded. I have always wondered if there was a correlation. She also was later diagnosed with a skin-picking disorder.

    • I have both bruxism and skin-picking disorder and have always wondered if there was further correlation between the two, other than the underlying anxiety

    • I recently read something that showed strong evidence of thyroid disorder and crowded teeth. Your niece should get her bloodwork done through a health care provider other than the main stream. It took me thirty years to finally get a diagnoses from regular MD’s. The thyroid affects almost everything!

  8. What causes it is early childhood trauma. It is the result of the fight/flight reaction in the brain. Little children, who are scared and have no coping skills, turn all of that fear inward. When the subconscious takes over at night, it is scared also. This totally effects the nervous system. Mental health care need, also. It’s the heart/brain. It begins in the development of a child’s brain. That is what causes it. Trauma Brain Response is what I call it.

    • I think you are on to something. Surprised Dr. Berg didn’t mention the emotional connection. I grind and gnaw during the day as well. It’s hard to break the habit 🙁

  9. I have been grinding my teeth since I was a child. My dentist told me decades ago when I asked him why I do it, that “it starts off as stress, and then becomes habit”. This was all before I ever smoked, drank, or was prescribed antidepressants, but I definitely was stressed out about what was happening at home.

    • I don’t drink or smoke. I do have stress now. But I had this problem since I was young too. So l guess it is genetic.

    • Trauma or stress especially from home causes bruxism to most kids and I’m one of them who is an adult today. So that means while the children experience trauma or stress they are deficient of vitamin B1 and D3. Can one recommend where to purchase the plastic piece to wear when sleeping ?

    • @Nomsa Ledwaba I got this from my dentist and it really helps me preventing from jaw aches and thooth related nightmares.
Hope, all the used words make sense, since I’m no English native 😅

  10. Dr. Berg PLEASE do a video on the cause of yellowing teeth! My teeth used to be sparkly white with zero effort and now they are so dingy no matter what I do. I’m guessing it may be a vitamin or mineral deficiency but I don’t know which one🤔

  11. I’ve had this since college, 40 plus years later still have it. Have to wear a mouthpiece at night.

Seems to be stress dependent, as I don’t smoke or drink.

Thanks to Dr. Berg for this video and to all my fellow commenters/sufferers.

  12. Thank you for more valuable information! My dentist said I grind my teeth at night and they want me to wear a night guard. I think this started happening to me about the time of my divorce from my first husband. I take vitamin D3 supplement and B3 but not B1. Something I will consider. 👍🏻

  13. Dentist here 👋 What a fascinating correlation between teeth grinding and vitamin B deficiencies. Mind blown 🤯. I will definitely be looking into this more.

For most of my patients who grind their teeth, I usually find that they also have some form of sleep apnea as well. Difficulty breathing at night seems to trigger those sympathetic pathways.

    Great content! 👍

    • I have severe TMD, and rigeminal neuralgia. I also I’m thinking that maybe I have sleep apnea, is there a mouthguard you can recommend that would help with sleep apnea and TMJ pain as well? As a dentist I thought maybe you could recommend some thing that would help both. My lower jaw recedes and the best appliance I ever had was one that pulled the lower jaw forward. Tried a few other dentists who couldn’t replicate it, first one no longer around. Thank you

  14. Thank you Dr. Berg for your amazing, educational videos 🙏💜
Can you please make a video on root canals and implants? So many of us have these and there’s information that say that they’re not good and cause problem. What is your opinion on the subject?

  15. I used to suffwr Bruxism till I almost recently( I am almost 52)..The moment I have eliminated the stress at work, my complaints diminished ..Thanks Dr. Berg. We all learn so much through you almost every day.. Regards from Istanbul..

  16. Hi Dr. Berg! I have been clenching and grinding for 40+ years. I definitely think stress is the main cause of mine and fluctuates accordingly. I lost 4 family members in 2022 and my grinding has now lead to my jaw popping out of position on my one side. I’ve been taking B1 and D3 for a long time and have not noticed a change in my grinding. I don’t drink or smoke. Would love to have a fix to all this as my dentist has encouraged me to wear a mouth guard during the day in addition to night and I prefer not to do that. Praying this regimen of vitamins works well for others. I think the best remedy for me is to learn how to de-stress.
