Today we’re going to talk about how consuming eggs and butter could potentially benefit your cholesterol.

However, keep in mind that if you have a genetic problem called familial hypercholesterolemia or if you are a hyper responder, this information will not apply.

Health benefits of cholesterol:
• It helps make hormones
• It helps make vitamin D
• It supports cell membranes
• It supports the brain
• It supports the immune system
• It’s needed to make bile salts

Egg yolks are one of the highest sources of cholesterol-mobilizing nutrients: choline and lecithin. One egg gives you about 186 mg of cholesterol. But, the body makes about 3000 mg of cholesterol a day.

Dietary cholesterol isn’t associated with increased cholesterol. There are also no studies that show that consuming eggs negatively affects the cardiovascular system.

In one study, they found that certain phytonutrients in eggs improved the cholesterol profile in a group of people on a low-carb diet.

Egg yolks are also loaded with vitamin K2, which supports a healthy heart.

Grass-fed butter also has an incredible influence over cholesterol, and if you can find cultured butter, then that’s even better. Cultured butter has the added benefit of friendly bacteria that help boost the benefits of butter.

Your friendly microbes make bile salts, which help mobilize and regulate cholesterol. Butter is also a good source of vitamin K2 and is great for anyone going through menopause because cholesterol is needed to support hormones.

One study shows that butter has a neutral association with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Beta-carotene, which is high in butter, may also help lower cholesterol. Butter is also rich in CLA, butyric acid, and omega-3 fatty acids, which may benefit healthy cholesterol.

If you’re concerned about your cholesterol, certain things can potentially help lower cholesterol naturally, including:

  1. I eat lots of grass -fed butter daily and my triglycerides and cholesterol have always been low .Thanks Dr. Berg for another informative video !

  2. With the exception of one of my grandparents who died in their 60s from cancer (smoker), the other 3 lived to an average age of 97 (non-smokers). They ate bacon and eggs most mornings and cooked with butter and ate pretty much traditional stuff.

  3. My grandparents & gt aunts lived to mid-late 90’s. Ate butter, lard, eggs, cheese etc. no obesity whatsoever. Cheers Dr Berg, you are wonderful! 🍽🧀🧈🥚🍳🥩🥓I follow your advice religiously, I LOVE eggs, I’ve eaten them regularly for years. I’m 53, 130lbs, feel fab 👍🏻💪🏽

    • If they weren’t obese, it means they were burning off those calories. Caloric restriction itself helps keep cholesterol in check.

      Butter is high in saturated fat which increases cholesterol. I follow a lipidologist on Instagram who was saying how with his patients he tells them to swap butter for olive oil or avocado oil and they immediately lower their LDL.

      There is a genetic component as well, but across the board, saturated fat tends to increase total cholesterol and LDL.

      You need *some* because your body does need some cholesterol. But you gotta keep LDL in check.

      Also, the info in this video about vitamin K2 only applies to pasture raised chickens and cows that are grass fed, grass finished. So props to that being stated here…but that’s not what most people are eating.

    • @Cyberfunk I know a smoker who is in his 90s. The only thing I notice is he drink a lot of tea. I guess the antioxidants in tea protects him from the toxins in cigarettes.

  4. I eat butter, bacon and eggs every single day, with a cup of coffee and I feel fabulous! I got my bloodwork done it was perfect Dr. Berg! ❤🌅

    • @Yankee 🌹 Rose Well hate to break it to you but 100mg/dl isn’t anywhere near perfect. Heart disease progression only stops at something below 70mg/dl and perfect would be something like 50mg/dl. The only reason why 100 is considered normal is because so few people are actually at the physiolgically healthy levels. You can read for example study: “Optimal low-density lipoprotein is 50 to 70 mg/dl: Lower is better and physiologically normal”

  7. 25% of people have LP(a) – would love you to do a video on this – it increases the small LDL particles, so I think eating dietary cholesterol should help to lower the % of LP(a) cholesterol versus non-LP(a) cholesterol.

    • I will correct you a little bit…100% of people have Lp(a) cholesterol in their blood…but it is estimated, that about 20% have elevated levels, which put them at risk of dying from heart disease at a earlier age. And so, these people, together with the FH group, also needs to ignore dietary cholesterol advice from Eric Berg! 😉

  8. Doc you first introduced me to Apple Cider Vinegar a few years ago and that helped me to lower my cholesterol naturally and got me off whatever meds I was being poisoned with at the time. ACV also helped me on my journey of weight loss! I buy a lot of farm eggs these days and thankfully in my parts of NC there is no egg shortage. Kerrygold butter is also a main in my diet and rocks my taste buds tremendously!

    • yes! 👏🏻🙌🏻 I do 2T of Organic ACV with the Mother in 1C water 2× daily & I’m slim despite practically living off Free Range eggs drenched in grassfed butter 🤤😋

  9. I’ve eaten eggs and butter all my life and relieved to learn this. Now I eat the grass fed and grass finish foods. Slowly gaining positive ground on healing my inflamed leaky gut. The intermittent and prolonged fasting really help the most! Thanks

  11. I heard Dr Berg mention consuming grass fed butter for night sweats due to perimenapause and I do believe it’s helping . I heard dhea is recommended as well but I don’t know if it’s OK for someone with PCOS. Appreciate Dr Berg so much. I just purchased ghee 😊

  12. I have been eating eggs and grass-fed butter since I was kid, and my LDL cholesterol level remains very low to this day (I’m 56). My doctor found out what I ate and implored me to stop eating them because they were “unhealthy”. Perhaps “unhealthy” for his bank account (they hoped that we would become dependent on them for prescriptions and frequent tests). So, I switched to the doctor who specialises in the functional medicine.

  14. I ran a genetics report on my 23 and me data and I have several segments that indicated I had reduced choline conversion. I feel so much better when I’m on that! Perhaps that is why my LDL is higher than normal! This is the real medicine. Thanks Dr. Berg.

  15. You are almost Carnivore Doc. I started with and still follow you daily. I have lost 37 lbs. My goal is 45. Almost there. I have given up vegetables almost completely. No bread, pasta, rice, grains, beans, many nuts and very few vegetables and I feel great and my doctor is asking what I have done. My answer is “Doc Berg”.

  16. This works, for 30 years I listened to the whole grains, mostly veges, no yolks, no red meat fat, no pork. My labs stunk, and all the time I exercised a lot. Plus sti) took lots of stations and BP meds. Nephrologist advised me to forget it all. Stopped all simple sugars and starches and wheat. Started whole eggs again, bacon, butter, sausage, chuck roast, etc. For carbs….colored veges. 60 % protein 20% meat fat & butter, 10% carbs. At 63, have best labs since early 20’s.

  17. I did keto for ~8 wks and did before/after cholesterol labs. I fried all my food in quality grass fed butter. I was eating eggs, bacon for brkfast and grass fed beef patties for dinner.
    Before: HDL: 53
    LDL: 98
    Total cholesterol: 164
    After: HDL: 56
    LDL: 54 !!!! 🙂
    Total cholesterol: 142

    My good cholesterol was higher than my bad cholesterol! 👍 👍

  18. Thanks Dr Berg. My cholesterol was slightly high in my last blood test results but I don’t eat fatty food, fast foods, fried food, dairy or any of those bad foods. I don’t eat that much meat either.(my iron is low).I eat mostly fruits and vegetables, plant based with chicken( baked or stewed) and fish and eggs. I Also eat OMAD and practice long fasts for at least 3 days water only each week. My doctor mentioned those bad food not to eat which I do not eat! And he asked me to exercise which I started to try to do regularly like I used to before. You mentioned our bodies make cholesterol? What would cause it to make excess? Could that be the reason why mine is slightly high? Could you make a video addressing this?

    • Well slightly high cholesterol? I would ask the Doctor if your HDL has also increased. Plus I want to know how the LDL is formed Ie: how much large buoyant healthy ldl and how much small damaged dense particles. I think the answer will be either “we don’t do that test” or buoyant healthy particles are good for you , glade we checked.

  20. I’ve been eating 18 pasture raised eggs fried in raw butter for over a month now & before I had about 5 eggs a day. Energy & strength levels have noticeably increased. I have no clue what my cholesterol level is, but none the less I feel great so far.
