Let me clear something up. A protein is not really protein. Here’s what I mean.

Today, I want to clear up some confusion around protein.

Typically, the minimum amount of protein a person needs is 50 grams. You might think that if you consume a beef steak that’s 100 grams or 3.5 ounces, you’re getting double the amount of protein you need for the day.

However, there is a difference between the weight of a steak and the amount of protein in the steak. For example, a steak that weighs 100 grams only contains 26 grams of protein. This is because steak also contains fat and water.

Proteins also vary in amino acids. We don’t even really have a daily requirement for protein—we actually have a daily requirement for amino acids in the protein. The problem lies in the quality of protein or the bioavailable acids in the food you eat.

While some plants have protein, animal sources are a better option for protein than plant sources. Also, know that many infant formulas and foods for toddlers are loaded with soy protein and other plant proteins that can cause problems with digestion.

Foods high in protein:
1. Breast milk
2. Eggs
3. Meat
4. Chicken
5. Dairy

  1. (adjusts tinfoil hat) I’m starting to get suspicious over government crusades against animal protein

    • @Andrew Beckman actually most meat at the store are corn and soy fed along with any other crap they can get them to eat. Making them not high quality proteins.

    • @Don’t Fit it’s extremely clever what they do
Thank you again very much sincerely for your insights enlightenment
It doesn’t seem cruel or upsetting for the cows then?🐮🐮🐮
It doesn’t seem sound like a painful process for the cute cows
      But it’s unnatural
But so long’s they don’t hurt the dear cows 🐮🐮🐮then no h^rm’s done to them yes?🤔🌳🌼🌳🌞🌳🙏

    • @S# N# but, green grass cleans methane faster than trees (I’m told). So eat pasture raised grass fed beef vs stockyard raised on corn/grain fed beef.
Yes, it is more expensive, but combined with intermittant fasting of 1 or 2 meals a day you save the cost of that extra meal.

    • 😂 food has never been food🤦 🤣 it’s actually medicine 🤷 if you look at it that way.. food will change your health.

  2. I just came across this amazing doctor and have been watching all of them now when I can. Just amazing and easy to understand. Thank you! Jason

  3. I learned in 1986 that there is protein in many foods but some are short in the number of essential amino acids and that protein cannot be assimilated by the body until it gets ALL of the essential amino acids. For example, some nuts may have a few of the essentials but not all and therefore the body would need to wait for you to consume the missing amino acids. If you had eggs on the same day as the nuts, that would sort out the problem. Source Muscle & Fitness.

  4. I’m pretty aware with what my body can digest. A year or so ago I always got this protein cereal that had good metrics in paper but it was vegan protein. I processed it legit like corn. My body didn’t absorb a thing. Destroyed my digestion until I cut it out of my diet and suck to my usual meat and tuna

  5. Good Morning, Dr. Berg 🌞
Another Great video ! Thank you so much for sharing this sharing this with us. Have a Blessed day !

  6. 🙋‍♀️Hey Dr. Berg! Ive been doing IF/keto for about 6 weeks and ive lost 15lbs. The main indication of weight-loss is when i look down, I no longer see my belly! Unbelievable! This works for me because I love proteins and fats! My first cheat with sugar left me with severe inflammation in my hands. For those interested in starting, it is so easy once you get past the first few days. Just make sure you get your fats and protein in, this keeps you satiated for the full time ubtil your eating window! Only thing that i miss is flavorful drinks!

  7. Hey doc, great video! Have a couple of questions.
For someone who’s trying to grow muscle, would it be okay to go beyond 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight? Also, how would you know if 100% of the protein you’re taking is being successfully broken down into amino acids? And how much of the daily protein intake should be collagen, 20%? 30%?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    • Just eat whole food animal sources of protein don’t eat collagen. And for growing muscle you’ll probably want at least 2-2.5g of protein per KG for optimal muscle growth

  8. Good Morning, Dr. Berg 🌞
Another Great video ! Thank you so very much for sharing this with everyone , Have a Blessed day 🙏
Made many mistakes in the First writing , correct it on this one ! 😉

  9. Thank you so much Doctor Berg. I am on Day 5 of Keto in order to help my heart health. Yesterday I managed an uphill walk to visit my friend who is a cancer patient. I didn’t eat anything while I was there, and I didn’t have tea or coffee, I just sipped from my water bottle because I wasn’t hungry. And he kept telling me to eat something there. He kept asking me to have ice-cream, sweets etc, said he would cook a pizza (store-bought) for me, etc., hr even phoned me last night urging me to go to the store to buy myself ice-cream. How do other people deal with friends urging them to eat, especially at social gatherings, parties and holidays? Thank you all.💖

    • @Original Pirate That is fascinating. I was a drinker in my 20s and 30s, (now 75) and yes, drinkers want everyone around them to drink (pot smokers also). I simply found different friends – problem solved. Except with my drinking family who fairly disowned me for being a tea toteler (plus I changed politics. – 2 strikes against me). But good riddance to the drunken life style (and their hateful politics).
I suspect carbs, especially sweets, have a similar mental effect and addiction as alcohol? Because I get some of the same reactions as you have identified. Humm?
Readiing other replys z- tell them “it gives me a migraine, I must be allergic”.

    • It can be even harder than declining alcohol since eating is often seen as being polite. Best is to say you’re not hungry or you already ate…stuffed.

    • @joncarbone Definitely. To my grandmothers, the food they grew and cleaned and prepared and served to us was a symbol of their love for us.

  10. DR. Berg thank you for your great information. I studied in Germany one winter and in the town was a mother school. I think there should be more taught in regular schools for boys and girls about real food and what we need to eat and why and how best to prepare it. And what needs to be fed to babies growing up. There also needs to be more schooling for adults available for bringing up babies, children and food to eat. Your videos help do that.

    • It’s a great idea; BUT – unfortunately it will be a case of the “experts” giving the wrong advice. Dr. Berg often says to do the opposite of what the experts tell us; from my own experiences, I believe he is right.

  11. Thank you for making all this information public Dr. Berg! I was wondering if you have heard of orthotropics, they are doing a very similar thing to you in dentistry.

  12. I can personally attest to the fact that different MEAT proteins supply different amounts of energy. When I eat beef, no problems, but when I eat chicken, there is NO or REDUCED energy the next day. I was wondering why I had low energy in my labor intensive job and I eventually correlated it with what kind of protein I had consumed the dinner before. I mentioned it to my older brother and he started observing his energy levels and found the same correlation. so, even among meat based proteins, energy levels vary.

    • Very interesting. I also have energy dips, and it’s só só hard to find what’s the cause – I’m certain it’s what I eat and when and the timing with physical activity.

    • If you are eating low carb the FAT consumed would play a large role. There is much more fat in most beef than say a chicken breast, and much more fat in a chicken thigh or leg vs a chicken breast. Interesting idea about chicken though, I am not very fond of chicken but when I do eat it I eat almost always fatty chicken pieces like drumsticks, or thighs on the bone, wings etc.

  13. Really good to know, I was wondering if the 3oz of protein you were talking about was 3oz of protein-rich food or 3oz of the protein itself. This clears it up!

  14. Fantastic video, so educational and helps provide some excellent groundwork to build a healthy protein intake. Ironically a couple of weeks ago we were going through this process to understand “protein verses protein” in our diet. Thank you for confirming our discoveries.
