Is cereal bad for you? Let’s talk about it.
If you had to choose between consuming cereal or the box it came in, my assumption would be that the box is a healthier choice.
There was a recall on certain cereals a few years ago because of a problem with the boxes that could possibly create temporary nausea and diarrhea in some people. But, even so, the cereal inside of the box is more concerning.
Cereal is promoted as being healthy, yet it’s an ultra-processed food with added sugar. It also contains grains and synthetic vitamins. Not only that, but companies have made outrageous claims regarding their cereal brands.
There is even a loophole allowing companies to add maltodextrin or corn syrup to the cereal and list them as carbohydrates, even though they behave like sugars.
While they may say you could experience various health consequences if you stop consuming cereal, I believe the only consequence would be a healthier body.
The healthiest breakfast food for kids is actually eggs. Ditch cereal and learn more about the health benefits of eggs in my other videos.

Thanks for watching! I hope this increases your awareness of why cereal isn’t a healthy food. I’ll see you in the next video.

Just started cutting sugar and intermittent fasting. Let you know how things go. Gave up most cereals a while back👍
Thanks for all the good info.
Just cut out all sugar and “fake sweeteners” all together. I’ve always loved a cup of tea throughout the day… each with a bit of sugar added. Well, decades ago I started having my green and black tea with nothing added. It tasted so odd at first but I knew it was healthier for me. It’s so delicious now… I think your mind and tastebuds just need time to adapt.
Now? I can’t imagine adding sweeteners to anything.
Growing up my Grandmother always said to “avoid foods with too many ingredients.” I think she was ahead of her time, lol.
@Jerry Jerome Hawkins what about just a little drop of raw unfiltered honey?
@Jake the snake hmmm… well, okay Jake. But just one!! 😤
😅👍🏽
Plain Rolled-Oats with no sugar should be fine with skimmed organic milk….
@Jake the snake High-Grade Manuka-Honey with an MGO rating of 500 or upward should be fine in a cup of tea, or on a teaspoon straight down the throat once a day….
I gave up eating cereal and potato chips about 4 years ago. I realized how highly processed these foods are and how our bodies really don’t these bad foods. I don’t miss cereal or potato chips and my body thanks me for staying away from them.
@Jake the snake Yes, I agree. I rarely buy them, though. My faves are Trix, and Captain Crunch 😅
@Jake the snake yeah, life’s all about little funs.
@Donna Baardsen junk food. Try Cheerios, Regular Corn Flakes, regular Rice Krispies. Those 3 have some nutrition.
I can’t be the only one who noticed the missing word?
Its very hard to find things that are natural these days. They even add sugar with the milk here.
You should do ‘supersize me’ style documentary where you take a group of identical triplets and put one on healthy keto for a month, one on nothing but cereal for a month and have the other eat nothing but cereal boxes for a month, and do all their bloodwork before and after to test the outcomes lol
Lol Hadley… but which one will volunteer to eat the cereal? 😂
😉
@Jerry Jerome Hawkins — Sadly, the real problem would be = Who would volunteer to eat Healthy?
@Master Spade Unfortunately… you are correct my friend. My Grandmother always said… “the less ingredients there are… the better it is for you.” I’m thinking she was ahead of her time with that type of thinking.
I use to cringe while watching my wife eat Raisin Bran because her doctor told her it’s good for the heart, weight loss and cholesterol. Well lets just say that 6 months later she had a few choice unkind words for her doctor. Now, after 4 years of me living LC and completely free from processed foods she wanted my help. She’s never felt better.
@Nikolaos 100% FACTs, all of them!!
I got so fat eating Raisin Bran.
Genius comment. 👍🏽
Raisin bran used to give me heart burn
@Horny Mooseknuickle
Same, I love it and eat it maybe twice a month. Just put a little stevia on it.
Their justification of how it’s a healthy food is just funny. More people need to watch this video!
I used to work in a cereal manufacturing plant, and the main smell on site and within in a 0.5 mile radius was/and still is like caramelized sugar. Given the impact on our health and development, it’s absurd to think that these products have become a mainstay in our children’s (and adult) diets, and yet we are not fostering an environment where people make healthy choices, or lead healthy lifestyles. Companies find ever inventive ways to keep the lie that cereals are part of a well balanced diet
but it’s nutri-score A and the box is green so it’s healthy right ? 🤦🤦♂🤦♀
@captainnoyaux only if you eat the toy that comes in the box as well. (it was a 90’s thing)
@Neil Dobbs haha yeah I remember. Yummy 🤣
Yep the advertising campaign to make kids like cereal goes back decades, I loved cereal as a kid and even adult, but now I stay away from it.
You are a good husband.
I stopped eating cereal years ago when someone told me “it’s like eating candy for breakfast.” That really stuck with me
Never thought of it that way , but that statement is true.
💯 Like: muffins are cake, donuts are fried bread 🙂
I like to call it human kibble 😂
Bravo Dr Berg! I love the way you take the viewer gently by the hand down the path of common sense questioning of the labeling and advertising lies. Hopefully some parents – and cereal loving adults – will wake up to the garbage contained in those boxes.
When I was in the military they said we could eat the box in our MRE. This is the first time I’ve heard about eating a box since! Great stuff doc thanks. (A little different I guess, we would eat it on a survival stand point as opposed to a nutritional one)
I would eat cereal on a survival stand point as opposed to a nutritional one
Thank you, Dr. Eric, you look quite healthy, everyone should take your advice. Parents would put additional sugar on their children’s cereal when I was a kid. my parents didn’t, thank goodness. Then the “sugar already added” cereals came out. Now, as a senior, I like Irish oatmeal, occasionally. What do you make of that? Thank you!
Parents have been wary of cereal publicly for decades. My parents wouldn’t let me touch the stuff as a kid, I’d even watch shows where they’d mention the amount of sugar in cereals could kill a child. This was way back in the 80’s.
Your righteous indignation is very much appreciated. The Standard American Diet, is no diet, at all.
Thank you!
It’s been 20 years since I’ve had breakfast cereal. It was one of the very first things I removed from my diet when I began on my journey to better health. I can’t imagine eating that stuff now. It would be another 10 years before I completely removed SODA from my diet. That’s how much I avoided cereal. I should have ditched them both at the same time, but I made the hilarious excuse that “real sugar” soda was okay if I only had a couple per week. 😝
I grew up on cereal. I always had fever blisters when I was a kid. I stopped eating cereal as an adult, years before we could get this info on the internet. The fever blisters went away. I connected the dots over time, with cereal and sodas. I determined that it was the artificial food colorings they use in these products that was causing the fever blisters. I don’t actually know if it’s the food colorings themselves or something that goes along with the addition of them that activates the fever blisters and, I’m not saying that the food colorings are the root cause of the virus, if that’s what it actually is in my case. I’m just saying that the food colorings activate the fever blisters.
Same symptoms for me as well. My mom would buy me the cereal strictly because I insisted on the prize inside the box then later in life I just loved certain cereals.
This is absolutely EPIC, and should be eye opening for parents. Unfortunately, due to the endless array of tv commercials aimed at the kids every Saturday morning, and the outright lies told to the consumers, this message will hardly make a blip on the nutritional radar. People will continue to consume train cars full of this stuff every single day! Sometimes it just feels like we are being fed like cattle… Get the word out, tell your friends to watch this video, it should be on national television every morning, right after that Honeycomb commercial… God help us all… And thank you Dr. Berg! Now, where’s that Fruity Pebbles box I was gonna eat this morning?
You made me laugh, because there’s a group of people who’s main take away will be, “He wants us to eat boxes.”
As an American, I did grow up on cereal. But as I got older, I clearly saw how it was loaded with sugar. Haven’t eaten cereal for breakfast in years. But not gonna lie, I do do it once in a while as a dessert 😂.
‘The danger of extruded breakfast cereal’ by Sally Fallon from 2013… sites a study with rats in which some were given the cereal, some the box… on YouTube – a brilliant watch for those interested.
Thank you, Dr.Berg 🙏💕 As a holistic nutritionist, the cereal/breakfast conversation is one I have often with parents. I’ll be passing this video along to many!
I thought the cereal is in a bag separate from the box. Anyway, after a keto awareness, I see the amount of sugar in cereal and stopped eating it. Another thing, once you process fiber down so much, it doesn’t act as fiber anymore, which means it’s technically not fiber but they’re aloud to lie about most anything using deceptive wording so it’s up to each individual to do their own homework, hence here I am listening to Dr Berg, thanks doc. I didn’t know much of real health until tuning into you 5 years ago doc, I thought I did but boy were most other mainstream doctors wrong. It’s a shame that real health away from big pharma is considered ignorant and near sacreligious these days. Bless their hearts, they’re being deceived and boy do they love feeling so intelligent using all that tv hospital lingo. I’ll take my chicken’s eggs over that overpriced crap any day.
I quit eating cereal when I went on the Keto diet on 12/1/2022. Quit all sugar and carbs. Have lost 60 lbs, quit all prescription drugs and am living healthier! Thanks to Dr. Berg for all the information he has provided!

I haven’t eaten cereal on a daily basis since my teen years but just watching your video reminds me of why I was going to school with a sugar high 😂 amazing how much false information is out there and there are people that still believe these lies. Thanks for all your good information Dr Berg 👍
Great video Dr. Berg
My biology teacher in high school used to tell us all the time….
he would say “guys, you might as well eat the box” 😂
That always stuck with me however, we used to love eating those crappy sugary cereals when we were kids💯
