Did you know some health supplements contain hidden sugar, like maltodextrin? Today, I will share a simple test to find hidden sugar in your food and health supplements.

Iodine mixed with water is a golden color. If you combine iodine with starch, it turns blue. When you add iodine to bread, for example, it turns blue. Or, if you put maltodextrin in water and add a few drops of iodine, the water will turn blue.

My brand of electrolyte powder doesn’t have any sugar or maltodextrin in it. However, when we look at a competitor’s electrolyte powder that also claims it doesn’t have sugar or maltodextrin, it turns blue when iodine is added.

Maltodextrin behaves like sugar, spiking insulin, but can be classified on a label as a carb and not a sugar. On the glycemic index, table sugar is at 65, and glucose is at 100—maltodextrin is between 105 and 185.

Maltodextrin is the most common starch added to supplements and other products. If there is less than one gram of maltodextrin in a product per serving size, the company doesn’t even have to state it.

Maltodextrin can also be found in flavorings, energy gels, sports powders, and even baby formulas. It’s important to be aware that some so-called keto-friendly products can also contain maltodextrin.

  1. We did this test in the biochemistry lab as a part of the course, now I feel fulfilled something I studied would have great impact later in life

  2. You are my invaluable health specialist for guiding me out of my obsession with sugar. Thanks a lot and wish you the best from the bottom of my heart ,Doctor Berg

    • Wow ! Everybody Needs to See this! Its bad enough for Adults & Children their doing this to, But Babies , cruel Wrold! I will share this with MANY. & Thank You!

  3. All sports supplements, drinks, protein bars, vegan foods, hydrate packs are loaded with Maltodextrin and also baby formulas as you said.

Other names for maltodextrin include corn syrup solids, modified corn starch, modified rice starch, modified tapioca starch, modified wheat starch, etc. disguised as Maltodextrin

    • AND the body allowing that, is the same one to ensure our food is safe and good for consumption! Culprit FDA!

    • @Seattle Six we both know that the government does not care about its citizens, yet they are to serve them and care for them.
The government needs to govern in God approved ways, not to serve their own interests and their pockets and then have the audacity to blame its citizens AND the rest of the world for the obesity. Please do not insult intelligence and wisdom.
You do know that God is watching and He can see the hidden intentions in the hearts of everyone, right? Including those in power!

  4. There is definitely something in Metamucil that completely obliterated my willpower to avoid cravings. So I got plain organic psyllium husk. Huge flavor difference but no more cravings.

  5. I’m slightly allergic to wheat. And I had exactly the same allergic reaction on my skins and in the guts when I consume some other brands of supplements even though they wrote gluten free on it. At first, I thought I accidentally ate some wheat products. Later on, I did some more searching and found out they add hidden maltodextrin (without writing on the labels) in their products for some unknown reasons.
I also felt weird that I never got any allergic reaction when I consumed products from Dr Berg shop even it seems to be the “same” kind of minerals or vitamins.
I had no idea why. But now, I guess there may be wheat residues from the hidden maltodextrin in those products of other brands causing me the allergic reaction.

  6. They need to outlaw Maltodextrin/Dextrin. I’m tired of starting over and over just to feed big pharma’s incompetence, mendacity and malfeasance.

Thank you for the heads up!

  7. That’s why I don’t eat any processed foods i learned from you Dr 😂 ,thanks to you for making us more healthy

  8. Dr. Berg, THAT was the reason why i bought electrolyte powder from you as I had been in many stores and all i found had this ingredient you mentioned!!
I realize my chemistry teacher always questioned and ran different tests of food to teach us the importance of finding and knowing the truth for ourselves. It certainly is very useful AND also exposes the FDA real interests… not people’s health, but their pockets while poisoning them!!
Thank you for taking us all to the lab 😊🙌

  9. Thank Dr. Berg once again. It’s amazing how do “simple” elements are able to perform the most complicated tasks in the human body and in the world.

  10. I studied Food Science and Technology at University, this truly is one of the simplest tests that you can do at home with very accurate results… Thank you so much Dr. Berg… God bless!!! ❤

  11. Dr Berg, love you and your products. May I ask if you’ll ever put out an unflavored/unsweetened electrolyte powder? I really wish you’d offer one as I get burnt out on the flavors and I don’t particularly like the taste of stevia.

  12. To whoever is reading this keep going, you’re doing fine! No matter how slow your progress each new week is filled with tiny steps forward. Be proud of yourself you got this!

  13. One of the best things about this dude is that he never takes credit for himself when he uploads something. He always respects us, the audience, and he is always full of energy in his videos. Keep up the hard work!!

  14. This is so cool! I used to look at the label on the product and see that it says, for example, 5 grams total carbohydrates and then it says 3 grams sugar. I was always wondering if the rest 2 grams are perhaps starch, or something else. This test definitely clarifies lots of confusion. Thank you, Dr. Berg!
