    • Siim can you do a video on the optimum time to fast for autophagy I read that autophagy increses up to two weeks fasting then levels off us this true? Also why do you say fasts over 5 – 7 days can be counter productive. Cheers man.

    • Good video, I can do dry fast for 13 hours without any problems, as soon as problems do arise I drink some water and keep drinking it. I can keep that up for about 20 but then I need a cup of coffee. After about 35 hours I need to eat something small.

  2. Love your channel Siim! I have been in ketosis for about 4 to 5 months. Been doing inter meting fasting for about a year. Last week OMAD. My body fat percentage is around 16% lean body mass 56kg. My keton level early in the morning arond 2.5m/mol per liter, How long do you think before autophagy starts kicking? Thanks! PS.glucose level arond 70/80 mg/dl

  3. Dry Fasting speeds up the time it takes to get into autophagy and ketosis. The absence of water causes the body to break down fat for the hydrogen molecules and combines them with the oxygen molecules from your breath. 2 hydrogen molecules and 1 oxygen molecule equals water. Probably should only do this when adapted to keto though.

    • Good Bro if you mean the body creating water out of elemental H and elemental O2, then I should point out that hydrogen and oxygen combining to form water is a violent chemical process involving heat and energy exchange. It’s elementary physics and chemistry. Thanks.

    • I do not know the science, but I did a 3 day dry fast and I was still urinating a small amount

    • Prophetic Picture when insulin is low, such as during a fast, your body releases salt and the water held in by salt.

    • So no water all day? Lol I don’t think that would work for me as I work outside all day in the hot sun when its sometimes over 90 degrees

    I’d love to know how you stay motivated and perhaps you could do a video about your determination and discipline. I’ve been ‘falling off the wagon’ as they say with diet and fasting a bit lately and feel in a real funk about it! I’m not sure what causes me to self-sabotage but I truly want to end the cycle and would appreciate any insights you might have on the matter. Thanks! 😊

  5. Excellent video! You have some great information and I’m grateful to you for sharing what you know – especially with the science involved – with us! For the record, I don’t think you speak too fast, I do think you annunciate and the images you embed in the videos showing what you’re telling us is very helpful also. ^.^

  6. Another nice vid. I just finished a 9 day fast (just 3 light beers a day… lol! I know…), and full body lifting MWF … lost almost no strength on my lifts and lost a good amount of fat from my waist .. like, from 33″ to 32″. It’s interesting how pumped and tight muscles feel with no calories coming in … (I am keeping up with some electrolytes… sodium, in chicken broth each night, and sprinkles of potassium and magnesium, and I continue taking BASIS, and creatine).

  7. If you do HIIT activity (like me mostly) you can still eat e.g raw potatoes (very low GI/ GL no proteins) with salad or bulletproof coffee – that won’t stop autophagy/ kick you out of ketosis. The key is to be in ketosis (little/ moderate low GI/ GL carbs and fats) and eat no protein. But the best is eating nothing.

  8. Would you recommend water fasting or dry fasting in order to implement autophagy? I have lost quite a bit of weight and would like to try to implement autophagy in order to help with my excess skin. I’ve heard it helps, figured I could use a good science experiment. I also train calisthenics so I’d like to try my best to keep muscle lol.

  9. Siim – well done on your videos that are veritable fire hoses of information! So with the ultimate combo of fasting and resistant training, when is the best time to do the exercise? I assume right in the middle of your fasting window, or would it be at the end?

  10. Amazing work Siim. Depletion of glucose and amino acids always takes place first in are cells prior to Autophagy. Siim clearly demonstrates this depletion process happening in our cells with this video without any room for error.

  11. Slim – you say resistance training helps. Should we train while fasted, to increase our chances of getting into Autophogy? Yesterday I started my workout at 20 hours fasted state. It was difficult, but I managed about an hour and thirty, but my strength wasn’t where it normally is. May have been a bad day, or maybe the fast!?! I broke fast at 24 hours.

  15. I have the book and am half way through it. I also have just completed 49 hours on my way to 72 tomorrow @ noon. After 24 hours my ketones were @ 2.0 mmol/L . This is the first time I ever measured my ketones and see that my keto-diet along with intermittent fasting has done me well. I recently upped my game after reading how you prefer training fasted 20-22 hours (I was just going 16). My adrenaline is through the roof and I feel like I can run through a brick wall after deadlifting (trap-bar). Love your stuff Siim as well as my other go-to guy, Thomas Delauer.

  16. Hi Slim, thanks for your hugely informative videos. I wonder, though, if you could tell me where you get the 24 hours from, for those in ketosis going into autophagy? Some other people in this field quote recent science that finds those in ketosis go into authophagy after roughly 13 hours, which is why many recommend 16:8 or 18:6 intermittent fasting, to give the body around 3-5 hours autophagy. Thanks!

    1. If it takes at least 24 hours to reach autophagy does it mean that highly popular 16-8 fasting is worthless for autophagy purposes and should only be used for a weight loss?
    2. Is ketosis required for autophagy?
