Today I’m going to cover the best remedy to help get rid of sugar cravings and cravings for alcohol: L-glutamine.

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. Glutamine turns into glutamate, which is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain.

L-glutamine increases gluconeogenesis, which is the production of new sugar. This means that this amino acid can quickly turn to sugar and feed your brain cells, but it won’t spike your insulin.

Both sugar and alcohol can provide a sense of relief to some people. L-glutamine may help provide fuel to the brain and reduce stress, anxiety, and pressure—this may help reduce the need for alcohol and sugar. L-glutamine has many other potential health benefits, as well.

Alcohol consumption can block glutamine and all of the beneficial effects that come with it.

Other things can also create a glutamine deficiency, such as:
• Chronic stress
• Overtraining
• Trauma
• Chronic infection
• A lack of glutamine in the diet

Foods rich in glutamine:
• Beef
• Chicken
• Fish
• Eggs
• Dairy
• Cabbage
• Dark leafy green vegetables

You can also take L-glutamine as a supplement.

Other things that may help get rid of cravings for alcohol and sugar:
• Regular exercise without overtraining
• Getting enough sleep
• Reducing stress
• Consuming less alcohol
• Get on the keto diet and do intermittent fasting

  1. Good morning Dr Berg.Great advice, i will send it to my husband.Thank you so much Doctor Berg.Have a nice weekend ❤

  2. I took glutamine powder when doing the gym everyday one year. I’d take a day off every 14th day. The glutamine helped get rid of the lactic acid from over working out. Little did I know that I was hurting my body and now I know it can help when I’m not trying g to work out everyday. Thanks Dr. Berg!❤

    Thank you Dr Berg!!
    😺👍

  4. I have the genes that make alcohol give me a super hit of dopamine; not only that, but almost never any hangovers. Those 2 things led me to drink nightly for basically 18 years. The problem was all the wasted time on those nights when I wasn’t drinking socially. Took me to just accept that I should never drink again and that I was not a drinker any longer and it became really easy. Don’t miss it at all either. When I reflect, all of the fun was from the social activities anyway, not the booze.

  5. Thank you, Dr. Berg! I appreciate your videos so very much. You truly help me stay the course on a metabolically healthy lifestyle. I occasionally have a slip-up due to emotions and/or a stressful situation. But, then I find I don’t enjoy carbs and sugar or occasional alcoholic drink at all, since I started my Keto/intermittent fasting way of eating. I also feel awful afterwards. Your videos get me back on track. Hope you have a great weekend!

  6. Thank you so much for this explanation ! I was a big alcohol drinker in the past, and since when I ve decided to stop this, my well-being has drastically changed ! Now I know why !! ❤🙏

  7. Just at the moment I decide to go alcohol free!!!Yesterday I was craving sugar and for the first time in years I went to purchase a Pepsi. Which is as bad as alcohol. Thank you for this video @Dr Berg❤

    • Pepsi is no where near as bad as alcohol yes it contains sugar but compared to what alcohol does to you it’s a world of difference

    • Fruit can help with the sugar craving. Frozen fruit is great to get that ice cream craving satiated as well.

    • @Edward’s Sisters’Hands thank you very much. Am actually shopping groceries , I will get some raspberries and blueberries . Thank you 🙏🏽

    • Pepsi and all sugary sodas are 100% WORSE for you than alcohol. Don’t do either, but if you must, have a drink of a good, high quality alcohol like high-end tequila or high-end wine… in moderation.

    • @Mike AuxbigThere is no such thing as moderation when a bottle of whisky is in front of me. I just had to give it up completely. Almost 2 months without alcohol. But I do look forward to one bottle of Dandelion and Burdock every night though. Compared to Coca Cola which is something like 12g of sugar per 100ml, the D&B I have is 4g. I don’t have much sugar besides that.

  8. Quitting alcohol was arguably one of the best things i’ve ever done. It wasn’t like it was ruining my life, bc I was very functional and would get energy, and i’d couple it with smoking (weed) while always doing something (i.e.: creating things like art, cooking, sewing, etc.)

I was a whiskey, scotch, red wine drinker and had my first drink of (Jack Daniels) in 6th grade.

I’m sure being an athlete at a high level most likely allowed me to get away with it for so long, but everyone isn’t so fortunate. Being sedentary or inactive + poor eating habits—coupled with poor sleep is a recipe for disaster!

It did use to give me crazy anxiety, though. Worrying about things that I didn’t even feel like were necessarily big problems. Sometimes the alcohol would make it one.

Quitting turns the powerless into the powerful!

  9. Very interesting! I was a pretty heavy drinker but noticed once l stopped sugar the cravings went way down. Now that I’m keto I have almost zero cravings and they usually only come after a hard day’s work when I haven’t eaten dinner yet.

I would never call myself an alcoholic, could say no whenever I wanted. But always felt my body was craving something the alcohol provided, never knew there actually was something, very cool!

  10. Once you rid alcohol from your life, the mental and physical benefits will abound. Excellent remedy Dr. Berg!

  11. My brother is in physical rehab right now because of alcohol. I found him in the floor unable to move/control the lower half of his body. He has been a functional alcoholic for almost 50 yrs. but recently started (secretly) drinking liquor. He had been declining, but we thought it was his COPD. In one day, he went from walking, driving, functioning, to completely disabled. Stay away from alcohol folks… you never know how or when it will try to kill you.

  12. A lot of people hit alcohol hard and took up drinking during covid lockdowns and now find it hard to give up that covid did a lot of damage in many different ways

  13. I don’t have sugar or alcohol cravings, but this study on L-Glutamine was invaluable to me. I’ve suffered from anxiety my whole life and I’m feeling much better since starting L-Glutamine for my _gut issues_ and had no idea it was impacting my emotional health. Thank you, Dr. Berg!

    • I also have anxiety when I turned 50 Lots of hormonal changes Some of my friends suggest CBD oil it’s changed my life

  14. Started taking kratom capsules a week ago and it absolutely took all alcohol cravings away as well as making me not so hungry. I was drinking tequila, wine, beer about every night. I’ll try L-glutamate when I take a break from the kratom. 🙂 Thanks!

  15. I drank so hard through my 20 years in the military. I thought there was no way to quit, until I did. In part, thanks to the folks here. This is a wonderful community!

    • Great 👍. Congratulations. Alcohol is a HUGE problem in the military. Many long nights picking ppl up from various police departments especially at (Fort Bragg) Fort Liberty, NC.

  16. I found that I really missed the “burn” from drinking alcohol (aka the carbonation). So instead, I’ve found sparkling mineral water to be a great substitute. Now I buy those by case when I go grocery shopping.

  17. Dear Dr.Berg kindly do the same format for below
    1. Drug Addiction
    2. Porn Addiction
    3..Social anxiety
    4. Food adiction

    Thanks much 🙏🏻
