Today I want to cover several interesting facts about sugar that you may have never heard before.

Interesting facts about sugar:
1. It’s not just the amount of carbohydrates that matters. It’s also the quality of the carbs.

You have to consume less than 50 grams of net carbs per day to get into ketosis. But, there is a big difference between consuming 50 grams of sugar carbs vs. 50 grams of carbs in general.

For example, 50 grams of carbohydrates from sugar would be equivalent to a twelve-ounce orange soda. But 50 grams of net carbs from vegetables is equivalent to about 42 cups of salad.

2. The liver treats fructose like alcohol.

Most types of sugar are really fifty percent glucose and fifty percent fructose. When you check your blood sugar, you’re really only looking at the glucose. Fructose doesn’t affect the blood sugar by that much. Instead, it affects the liver.

Even though fructose doesn’t raise your blood sugar levels, it can create other serious issues. These issues can include a fatty liver, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, free radical damage, inflammation, insulin resistance, and diabetes.

3. Just because it’s from beets doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Most of the sugar used in the US is from beets and is genetically modified, so there are traces of glyphosate. There is an in-depth process to produce beet sugar, and the end product is refined and overly processed.

4. The chemistry of glucose is similar to vitamin C.

This means that glucose and vitamin C are competitive to a certain degree. If you consume sugar, your body won’t absorb vitamin C.

  1. If ever shunned for eating the healthy keto way…. CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉 I greatly appreciate Dr. Berg, for continuously steering us clear of the many hoaxes out there. 🙌

  2. Great information. Fantastic presentation. So grateful for Dr. Berg to bring this information to us!

    • I don’t believe that. I agree that refined is much worse, but even unrefined is bad. Even whole fruit will damage your liver if eaten more than on extremely rare occasions. It depends on which fruits, though. Some such as berries are much less harmful than sweeter fruits like bananas or pineapples. But, even fruits like berries should only be eaten in small amounts.

  3. Always fascinating & so clearly communicated. Never any hype. No unnecessary Muzak (!) No silly camera gimmicks. Just no-nonsense nutritional education, aimed at helping stall, or reverse, the looming disease / healthcare crisis coming our way.

  4. 1. The production of sugar involves several steps, including washing and slicing sugar beets, passing them through a diffusion tower, and refining the carbohydrates.
    2. The recommended amount of carbohydrate intake to enter ketosis is approximately 50 grams per day, although this can vary.
    3. Finding alternatives to sugar can be beneficial, and there are resources available to explore these options.
    4. The production of sugar involves a complex process of refining and removing nutrients and phytonutrients from the natural product.
    5. Agave nectar contains a high amount of fructose, more than high fructose corn syrup.
    6. The liver is the only organ that can effectively process fructose, which it considers similar to alcohol in certain aspects.
    7. Consuming table sugar results in only half of it raising blood sugar levels, while the other half goes directly to the liver.
    8. It is important to be aware of the impact of sugar on the liver and overall health.
    9. Exploring alternatives to sugar can help reduce the consumption of fructose and its potential negative effects.
    10. Understanding the production process and the effects of sugar on the body can guide individuals in making informed choices about their sugar intake.

  5. The main takeaway is that fructose, found in sugar, is processed by the liver in a similar way to alcohol. Consuming excessive amounts of sugar can lead to negative health effects, and it is important to be aware of the hidden sources of sugar in our diets. Additionally, the refining process of sugar removes important nutrients and phytonutrients that are essential for our health. It is crucial to prioritize whole foods and limit our intake of added sugars for optimal health.

    • Yep, I got a fatty liver and the only way I actually knew it was through watching Dr Berg’s videos. I (used to think) having fruit smoothies for breakfast was healthy. (Boy was I wrong).👍

  6. Thank you for breaking it down for a us Dr Berg! You’re the best! ❤
🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July everyone!

  7. I have just reached the 50 pounds-lost in 6 months, thanks to Dr. Berg’s guidance and inspiration! And you know what? I don’t miss the sugar.

  8. Thank you Dr. Berg for restating how we ate fruit only in season, to the availability that we have now. i would eat fruit all winter long, at night, right before bed. Now it is summer during the day. it does help be sleep better.

  9. Lost 7kg by just quiting sugar and adding steps to my routine after every meal. Thank you for every video.

  10. I tried going without fruits for a long period of time. Bad idea. There are antioxidants and nutrients in those that we need. I’m always going to eat a small amount of fruits every day for the rest of my life. They give me a sense of well being. I quit drinking alcohol. That was my biggest problem.

    • Agreed. Fruits in moderation are definitely beneficial to the body, there is plenty of evidence backing this up.

    • Alcohol was my biggest problem too. I am down to just a small glass of very dry wine every once in a while with a meal. I sleep better and wake up refreshed now. I drink lemon juice and apple cider vinegar in water every morning.

    • I agree, i love my fruit. I eat cherries now since they are in season but i have a tendency to overeat and that’s my problem.

  11. I just have to share this here because nobody in my real life thinks it’s impressive but I’m giddy with happiness! Basically I struggled with acne for the past 6 years, not terrible to start but slowly getting worse every year, to the point where I was waking up with new spots every day and at times was ashamed to leave the house. They were also painful, since many were under the skin cysts that would last for months. I tried every topical on the market, healthy diet (or so I thought) but nothing touched it. I finally came to the conclusion it was hormonal, since it was mostly concentrated on my jawline, chin, and neck. I didn’t want to go on birth control because I know how bad it is for you and I used to be on it for years and hated the side effects.

I was prescribed Spironolactone and took it for 6 weeks. It cleared my skin fast but omg, the side effects were horrible. Dehydration, dizziness, lightheadedness, chest pain, heart palpitations, itching, fatigue, messed up menstrual cycle…you name it. Plus the potential for other more serious side effects long term. I stopped taking it and started doing more research on using diet to cure my acne.

I already knew to avoid sugar, gluten, and dairy. I basically ate healthy during the week but would indulge in out to eat food and alcohol every weekend. I was also eating lots of white rice and potatoes. I gave that up, and also started watching more of Dr. Berg’s videos on keto, insulin resistance, etc. I’ve suspected I have a problem with insulin even as a healthy weight person because carb-heavy meals put me in a brain fog and inevitably lead to a nap, so I decided to lower my carbs and do my best to avoid insulin spikes, which I didn’t know were connected to acne until I heard it in one of Dr. Berg’s videos.

I did keto for 4 days but wasn’t feeling great, so instead I switched to low carb (no fruit or grains, mostly veggies) with my only high carb item being 1 serving max of chickpea rice/pasta or pinto beans, which are complex carbs so they don’t cause the insulin spikes after eating. I also incorporated ACV and started supplementing with betaine HCL at every meal, as I also suspect I have low stomach acid (I have Crohn’s disease, rosacea, and acid reflux).

Within only a WEEK my skin looks amazing! The acne I got rid of on Spiro hasn’t come back, and the neck acne that even Spiro didn’t clear up is almost gone. Not only that, but the horrible perioral dermatitis that has been around my mouth on and off for five years (that I basically had just accepted I was going to have to live with) is GONE!

I also have more energy and less brain fog since I’m no longer having those constant insulin spikes. Now if only I could give up coffee 😅

Thank you Dr. Berg!!! I wish more people had the knowledge of how to cure themselves naturally instead of being put on dangerous and hormonally disruptive medications like birth control and Spironolactone. I firmly believe acne (and most conditions tbh) is your body telling you something isn’t right, and with the proper knowledge, we can overcome many things that mainstream medicine just wants to slap a (costly) bandaid on.🎉

    • @ScalpelTron I had acne issue and ever since I started following Dr berg I’m feeling good and acne free

    • @vigneshvgs S That’s awesome! So glad you were able to overcome it too! I truly believe diet is at the root of most health problems.

    • @ScalpelTron Exactly. Especially high carb diet. When I went through your comment I feel like it was me!!

  12. Hi Dr. Berg love your content. Can you do a video on “Natural Flavors” vs ” Organic Natural Flavors” Is there really a difference?

  13. The negative effects of sugar can’t be emphasized enough by Dr. Berg. I notice a huge difference in my mental health and energy by being off sugar versus my mental “well-being” when on sugar (the “high” from sugar lasts just a little while and then I’m “crashed” for the rest of the day and even into the next day).

    • YES!!! I’ve noticed that, too! I only stopped all sugars(the kind Dr. Berg just talked about as well as pastas, etc.) about two weeks ago, and now barely use even the keto-friendly ones—literally, just one or two drops of liquid stevia in my single cup of coffee each day—and the mental clarity that I’m very recently noticing is wonderful!

  14. “Starch is a series of sugar molecules connected together.”
Ok, I didn’t know this simple info. We learn new things daily.
How blessed we are to have a wonderful doctor like you!
Bless you and your family doctor.

  15. I was conned into sweetening my tea with agave nectar because it’s supposedly low-glycemic. That, along with advice to eat multiple meals a day probably made me diabetic, or at least helped.

  16. Thank you for helping us understand the seriousness of too much sugar!! It’s very helpful!

  17. No added sugar for me since you got me straight on my good healthy keto diet… ROCKIN with energy and focus now! Thanks Dr Berg!

  18. Just what I needed to see. Your videos are helping me clear up my psoriasis like never before. I’ve also started using your d3 supplement. Thank you so much 🙏
