Walking faster is a positive sign of cardiovascular and respiratory fitness.

VO2 max reflects your body's maximum oxygen consumption during exercise—higher levels correlate with a 9% lower mortality risk.

Muscle strength is linked to longevity, with grip and quadriceps strength serving as primary predictors.

The 'Get off the Floor' test assesses independence. The fewer points of contact needed to rise, the lower the mortality risk.

Imagine being an elderly individual prone to accidents. Strong grip strength aids in scenarios like gripping stairs to prevent falls, while the ability to rise from the floor facilitates seeking assistance.

Prioritize fitness indicators for a vibrant, independent life.

  1. I know so many people in their 80s who do not fit any part of this profile and still live.

Not healthy but live. Especially women. I believe women’s fat has a protective effect.

    • Women have two advantages. First they tend to put fat on in the legs and hips rather than around the mid (heart) section. Second they tend to be smaller than males. In all mammals the bigger ones tend to die earlier than the smaller.

  2. I’m sunk! I can walk fast and do grip exercises, but going down to do a plank, then laid flat on carpet. I had heck of a time getting up, didn’t just spring up. But I’m 72 Thank you slim land

    • The question is whether you can get off the floor without using your hands, arms. If you can’t regardless of age, you have work to do.

Not that being able to do this isn’t vsluable. At the same time IMO it is overrated. See my previous comment.

I can’t fo it snymore because of a knee injury (that I am working on), and it doesn’t determine (uniquely) my fitness level.

  3. Few people have access to VO2 measurements. However Siim should have elaborated on the Brazilian Dr.’s procedure for getting up from the floor. If you can get up from a sitting position flat on the floor without using your hands, elbows, you are virtually guaranteed another 5 years (unless you take the injection). Next year do it again and you are practically assured of another 5 years etc.

  4. We have a hood very simply marker of health. Can you get out of a chair without having to use your hands to help you up. I can say many students at uni couldnt get out of a chair unaided (at 20yrsa old)
