Dr. Lucy Burns is a GP in based in Frankston just south of Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from Monash Medical school in 1993 and received her fellowship with the RACGP in 1998. She also has a diploma of obstetrics, a certificate in clinical hypnosis and has board certification as a lifestyle physician with ASLM.

Lucy worked in general practice whilst having her children until 2005, and then worked for the Department of Defence at HMAS Cerberus as a civilian medical officer for 13 years. During that time she noticed a large increase in obesity in the current serving members and the new recruits.

Dr. Burns has muscular dystrophy which impairs her mobility. In her 20’s she managed her weight with exercise. Alas, this is no longer possible and she found that as she got older following the standard low fat style of dieting was unsustainable and unsuccessful. She became overweight/obese and was insulin resistant.

Another doctor friend introduced her to keto and she was hooked. A year later she opened her low carb general practice clinic called 'Epiphany Medical Weight Loss'. Along with her colleague Dr. Mary Barson, the pair have also formed a business called 'Real Life Medicine' and have an on-line program that addresses both the physiological and psychological causes of obesity. Her strong belief is to empower people to manage their health through nutrition and the low carb way of living.

  1. I’m retired now Lucy, but i share your background in Aust Society of Psych Med (was a College in my early days) and Medical Hypnosis😁. I need to be very low carb to keep the aches and pains at bay. Mega sugar addict (in remission).

  2. Enjoyed the talk!
I’m passing along a new low carb food I recently discovered. For those who have their own garden and raise broccoli. Try broccoli leaf. Use the smaller tender leaves. I found recipes on the web.

  3. Lovely to see the logic of CBT and NLP being leveraged to help others understand and take control of their brains, towards achieving their health goals. I work with individuals and apply these techniques to help them perform at their peak. Very important side of the good dietary lifestyle world.

  4. Thank you I have been waiting for this video. thank you for being real. Bread is harder for me to give up more than biscuits or chocolate or cake or even crisps. I make Keto bread. Toast is a gateway drug.

  5. Recok it’s easy I’ve been doing it for almost 5 years… I believe it’s true that if a person has cravings for any type carbs after a month or so it means that person is still having some of them .

    • Do not be fooled into believing that you and another are one in the same. If that were so, even you would be able to eat a high carb diet successfully as many do all their long life.

  6. I wish she were allotted more time, the content is first rate. I haven’t seen anyone else deal with the social and emotional side of eating, beyond choosing busy days when you’re pretty much alone to fast..

  7. I will watch this again actually. 👍It really spoke to me because it’s not just about losing the weight (action based?) it’s the keeping it off which for me is always harder because (thought based?) it is always preceeded by thinking about the food and why I am binging or turning to it when angry or tired. The one time I don’t is when I am worried or depressed. Doc says she wants to see me at half my current weight at least to be healthier and now my knees are going… I think you are covering a really huge point here and would welcome more on this subject and or around CBT. I think I saw being overwight as a protective shield. Traumatic thoughts made me choose to put up a shield of unattractiveness since 1999 to help me keep relationships at bay. But all it did was make me obese and unwell. I am enjoying finding an approach that is more than just action based. Thank you for the insight. it is helpful and a game changer. Well done on your own weight loss you look very well and confident. I have to remember nothing tastes as good as slim feels. You have given me ‘food for thought’ as it were. Looking forward to more videos from you. Thank you from the UK from a yo-yo Keto Faster.

  8. I started low carb for the weight loss. I stay on low carb (5 years later) because of the multiple unexpected health benefits.

  9. As a former sugar addict, my family don’t help when they buy and leave the chocolates and sweets in my view in the fridge. As a 95% carnivore, I do not eat fruit or veges – I just feel better not eating them, so my food choices are limited. I make fat bombs made with butter and bacon chips which help with the cravings. I lost 41kg almost 2 years ago and maintained that weight for 12 months until I changed jobs and became complacent towards my diet – started putting on weight, and am concerned that my GP will try to get me back on meds because they are my only option. I don’t think so, so I have recommenced being more strict. For me, it is the only way to convince my GP.

  10. Flick the switch!
I’ve always been reasonably healthy, but even going low carb, I still maintained the bottle or 2 per week red wine !! ?
I then eliminated the seed oils and started on animal based diet..
Finally, my silly brain decided to stop the wine..
