Let’s talk about biotin for hair and skin. You may have even noticed biotin shampoo for hair loss—does it really work?

Biotin is vitamin B7. Biotin is especially important for pregnant women and children. A deficiency of biotin in a pregnant mother could lead to malformations in the growth and development of the child.

Biotin acts as a coenzyme in the formation of proteins. There are a lot of different fats and proteins that make up body tissue. It’s a helper enzyme in the formation of myelin, hair, and skin.

The microbes in the large intestine make just as much biotin as you get from your diet. But, the majority of biotin you get from your diet is not in a free form—the biotin made by your microbes is. Anything that destroys your microbes, especially antibiotics, can have a negative effect on biotin.

The RDA for biotin is not fully agreed upon, and it’s difficult to get biotin from your diet. However, a few foods rich in biotin are egg yolks, liver, kidneys, and certain cheeses.

The top causes of biotin deficiency are:
• Raw egg whites
• The keto diet (causes the demand for biotin to increase)
• Anti-seizure medication
• Smoking
• Alcohol
• Lowered stomach acid
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• High amounts of exercise
• Age
• Genetic issues

If you’re experiencing symptoms like keto rash, hair thinning, or hair loss on keto, it could be because of a lack of biotin in the diet.

A subclinical deficiency in biotin could lead to thinning hair, hair loss, or skin rashes. However, symptoms of a major biotin deficiency can be more severe.

Symptoms of a biotin deficiency:
• Alopecia
• Eczema
• Seizures
• Candida
• Depression

Biotin cream or shampoo can be absorbed through the skin and may be beneficial for a subclinical biotin deficiency. You may also want to include biotin in your diet and even take a supplement form.

  2. I’ll be 80 in a couple months and have been taking biotin supplements for several years. My hair is long, curly, thick, and pure white and quite lovely. I get many compliments. Thank you for giving people such good advice 😊

  3. Thank you Dr. Berg! Excellent video as always. Do you have a recommendation for a biotin supplement that has really good biotin in it and not fillers?

  4. I started using head and shoulders thickening shampoo when i noticed my hair was thinning, all it did was make some of my individual hairs super thick to the point i could feel them when i ran my fingers through my hair, the rest of my hair kept thinning. Switched to a nature made biotin supplement and it did the same thing, just going to let nature take its course at this point. Biotin doesn’t work for everyone.

    • Finestride completely stopped my hair fall. I tried ALL of these natural remedies and they did absolutely nothing for my hair.

    • Yeah biotin definitely thickens preexisting hair and I wouldn’t say biotin alone made my hair start growing back. It was a large combination of things. Biotin is a key component though

    • @JJ may you want to allaborate? Even though i don´t have alcopecia i´m intrested. Because i do ave very fine hair and i noticed some time it rew thn it god split ends and didn´t gt long, thn again it grew and now it seems like it don´t.But i have to admit i don´t get them cutted.

  5. Hello Dr. Berg. I’ve watched several videos, both of yours and some others, to see I guess how effectively biotin can offset hair thinning effects from DHT. I know it doesn’t block it, but will the follicle ‘tightening’ effect from DHT mitigate or outright nullify the benefits of biotin for hair growth? Thank you for this and so many other videos!

  6. Almost three years ago I was almost 300lbs. I found Dr Berg and Dr Jason Fung’s videos and started on LCHF keto and learned how to fast. I’m 60 and I lost 160 lbs. I experienced hair thinning.
I started on Dr. Berg’s Hair Growth Formula supplement capsules and Biotin shampoo and conditioner about a year ago. It really works! My hair is great now and I’m still taking it and using the shampoo and conditioner. Thanks Dr Berg for all you do! 🙏🥰

  7. I’ve been watching all Dr. Berg’s videos since early 2019. I have learned so much. I take Biotin, Dr. Berg’s Hair Formula, eat Jell-O (on the days I’m not doing 48 hour fasting) I use the unsweetened and unflavored and add organic lemon and organic Ginger and I eat a minimum of a dozen organic pasture raised eggs a week. I also walk over an hour six days a week and do hand weights. I’ve never had problems with my hair falling out. I do this for hair growth and thickness. It works!! I also took myself off Synthroid after 20 years. I did it slowly from January to May of this year. I turned 56 in May.

    • Hi, how did you get off thyroid meds, can you explain, I stopped taking my statins and I would love to get off of thyroid medicine too!! Appreciate any advice you can offer 😊

    • I would also make sure you get plenty of vitamin D. A deficiency in that tends to cause hair loss, as well as causing a bigger forehead. I would love to know what exactly causes forehead enlargement, but I know for sure rickets and vitamin D do something because it happened noticeably to me over covid.

  8. Thank you Dr. Berg! This video is right on time. I ordered your Biotin shampoo a few days ago and can’t wait to try it soon. Recently I got Vitiligo and wondering if it helps for Vitiligo?

  9. Dr. Berg has a no nonsense way of helping people understand the way our body, nature and science work. No underlying motives. Just facts. Much appreciated Dr. 🙂

  10. Biotin may work for hair loss due to surgery, pregnancy, or medication, for instance, but it has little effect on genetic hair loss. If you are eating these food on a regular basis you may get enough biotin: beef liver, eggs, salmon, pork chops, sweet potatoes. almonds, broccoli.

  11. Dr Berg you have taught me so much that I have began to take my health more seriously at 57. I have been inundated with my own young adult children and grandchildren forgetting about myself. Again Thank you 🙏🏽

  12. Hi Dr Berg!
Thanks for always sharing Valuable information! Thank you for all you do!
I went to physical therapy today and a Jewish patient told me that your content has saved his life and how much he admires you. He recommended me to follow you and I mentioned that I am huge supporter of you for long time! God bless!
    Much respect and love,

  13. Dr Berg, this is a bit off topic but I have read that if milk thistle is taken with Berberine it significantly increases the absorption of berberine. I did it for a while and I did lose weight. Could you clarify or do a video on it?

  14. When I first started losing my hair, a combination of 10,000 units of biotin and a glass of soymilk (for the estrogen) brought it back. As the years went on, however, it stopped helping, but I discovered recently that I was only getting 1/4 of the protein I need each day. I didn’t realize that you have to gauge protein intake by weight and age. We need twice as much protein at 65 as we do at 30. Most of my hair had fallen out. I’m still not consuming the correct amount, but I did triple my intake and my hair has started growing back after just a couple of months. My hairline has come down in front almost a quarter of an inch and I no longer look like I have a bad comb-over on top. I’m crossing my fingers that it keeps up. I’m 68, for reference.

  15. This video imo contains very important info. I didn’t know that babies could have malformations. I’ve been taking suplements for a couple of years now, not every day, and have not seen any difference in my hair. But I understand the importance of taking supplements and I will continue to do so. Thank you Dr. Berg. Nice teeth btw.

  16. Dr. Berg, if you have any tips for weaning off Lexapro could you please share them? I’m on my third attempt but get so sick from withdrawal symptoms that I keep giving up. Thank you either way! ❤

  17. I have found biotin to be helpful in the past. (Just as I have found Dr. Berg to be so helpful so often.) It also causes stronger nails. But when I gained some significant weight, and then lost it, I had the common resulting problem of also losing hair.

I’m just sharing what helped me. At this point the biotin didn’t seem to be helping even at higher levels.
What did help was this: Putting in a blender, a red onion with some water. Then letting that slushy mix drip through some cheese cloth into a big jar.

I put the juice into a big eyedropper and lift up locks of hair, applying it wherever hair loss is seen on the scalp, and in my case, it has been seen to a scary extent.

Then I rub it all over my scalp. You can repeat this process, just leaving the onion juice on, and will not have to wash your hair for two or three days. Your head won’t smell funny. Your hair won’t look any different.

It took two or three months for me to see a difference, and the difference has been dramatic. I didn’t quit taking the biotin at the time.

Again, just sharing something that helped me personally in case it can help anyone else.

And btw red onions contain biotin.
