Today, I’m going to share some of the not-so-common reasons why you might be struggling to lose weight fast.

Insulin is at the heart of a slow metabolism. Ultra-processed foods like chips and Cheez-Its have 0 sugars but contain carbs with very little fiber. They also contain starches—strings of sugars connected together.

Starches act like sugar in the body, but worse! They are higher on the glycemic index, so they cause a higher blood sugar spike than sugar. Seed oils can also cause problems with insulin, affecting weight loss. Stress and lack of sleep can also affect weight loss.

So, how do you fix an insulin problem?
•Reduce sugar and starch consumption
•Stop snacking
•Exercise
•Get more sleep

It takes 24-48 hours to get into ketosis. If you have a glass of wine one night and then just one piece of bread the next, you are not going to be in ketosis.

Sometimes, your eating plan is working, and you just don’t know it yet. If your hunger is gone and your energy levels are high, your diet is working; you just need to give it more time.

Overtraining, poor sleep quality, and certain medications can also interfere with weight loss.

The following natural solutions can help reduce insulin and boost weight loss:
•Berberine
•Apple cider vinegar (ACV)–1 tablespoon in a glass of water
•Vitamin D–10,000 IU or a half hour of sunlight daily
•Healthy Keto diet with intermittent fasting

Once you’ve adjusted to a 16-hour fasting and 8-hour eating window, try switching to an 18-hour fasting window with a 6-hour eating window. You can even work up to 23 hours of fasting with a 1-hour eating window to boost weight loss.

Dry fasting can also speed up weight loss. Don’t eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset for 12 hours of dry fasting.

  1. Obesity has become a very worrying “pandemic” and clearly people need any support / advice that can help…but many people can’t put weight on and are struggling with chronic malnutrition issues, possibly due to malabsorbtion or auto-immune issues. This condition could do with a bit more attention perhaps?

    • Yes, because the body uses water to produce stomach acid. If you don’t drink, it holds back from producing that.
That’s short term. But water fasting for weeks on end is easier than dry fasting, because you are still alive.

    • @advex4428 not really dry fasting doesn’t mean you don’t eat. Muslims dry fast for 30 days each year. They don’t drink or eat when the sun comes out until when the sun sets. They break their fast with water and a date. You won’t die when you dry fast.

    • … only if you don’t get the message. Twelve hours are not as deadly as it seems.
Pushing through the limits – as Dr Berg says – can amp up the body’s survival and healing abilities.
If dry fasting is not you thing simply star with water fasting.❤

    • It’s not 115* everywhere this week… but where it is, most people will be inside with A/C on. So a 12H fast from 7pm to 7am is doable… even a 23hr isn’t going to be that hard (unless you have to work out in sun/heat). Anyway, no excuses, suck it up buttercup, try it before you dismiss it

  2. I’ve always been very thirsty. Less so in the three years since I went carnivore, but I still have water next to me at all times and naturally drink around a gallon each day. The idea of water fasting is just awful to me.

Back in 2015 my severe thirst helped me to stop a 28-year heavy smoking habit. I went to the ER with my appendix around midnight. The surgeon came in and said he was waiting until morning to take it out. Sometime in the night it burst (I suspect while I was still in the ER) and by the time they opened me up I had gangrene and they had to take out a fourth of my colon. Because of the resection of my colon I couldn’t have anything at all by mouth for days. Not even water. I was SO miserably thirsty that I forgot all about smoking. I didn’t think about food either. My need for water was all consuming.

I had tried to quit smoking multiple times and never made it past the fourth days. Well, it was six days before I was allowed water. It wasn’t until I could drink again that I remembered to miss smoking. But realizing I had made it over that four-day hump I decided when I got home I was going to try and not smoke. I think it was important that I framed it that way to myself. I wasn’t “quitting”, I was just trying not to smoke. Even with that head start it was still very hard, and there were tears, but I did it. It also helped that I decided to quit coffee too, since in my head the two were so linked. If I had a smoke I needed coffee and vice versa.

Anyway, yeah, I think I’ll have to start small with the water fasting. Maybe one hour a day and then increase it an hour every week and see how it goes.

    • Well done for the smoking. I have a fear of not being able to drink water from a few times I was in hospital and I couldn’t. It’s awful 😣🫶🏻

    • I never smoked but I agree, I had a very, very bad case of pancreatitis which ended in gallbladder removal. I was in there several days wasn’t allowed to eat or drink – the thirst was unbearable.

  3. 😂 Tell the truth! Some of y’all out there stopped losing weight once the haters started to persecute you, shame you, or try to force feed you Cheeze-It, Lucky Charms, processed bologna, etc., after they became jealous of your success! 💯 Keep up the good work! 💪

  5. I’m 63, age 60 I was the heaviest I’ve ever been 5’ 2” and 151 lbs. I was sedentary and eating hostess Chocolate cupcakes and washing them down with Pepsi for my night time snack. I decided to go low carb then Keto I lost 15 lbs and have fluctuated between 135 and 140 for the last 4 years by keeping sugar to a bare minimum like (birthday cake) At home I use Monk fruit and will treat myself to a Pepsi Zero now and them. Anyhoo now I am on track to lose 5 more this morning I weighed in at 131.4 I’m doing intermittent fasting 16:8 and 18:8. Thank You Dr. Berg for all your help with my health journey. I could go on and on it’s been quite a ride.

    • I would stay away from the aspartame also rebranded as asulphame k found in all the diet drinks. Worse for you than the normal sugar they put in by a long long way.

    • my short story: my anxiety and stress levels got so bad, I seriously considered rehab. Nothing helped, inc meds, substances, etc. It lasted for almost 10 years.
Then I tried int fasting (18+6), after 3 months my anxiety was GONE. Yes, I was hungry most of the time but at least I didn’t have panic attacks every single day. I call it ‘hunger enlightening’ and I love the feeling.
Now I’m about 2,5 yrs in been doing int fast but didn’t lose weight until keto. I wasn’t obese, but now I’m finally getting this athletic slim build I always wanted. And the serenity, ofc. That’s the best part.

    • Totally agreee….. Stress is so damaging and it makes u even more stressful when u realize how stressed u r….

    • Katiem, I thought so too, until I took a couple of weeks off work,. My weight dropped off without even really trying too hard. I think I was doing everything at a more relaxed pace instead of rushing around all the time and working out a lot.

  6. Another big thing is not drinking enough water when you’re water fasting. I did a 3 day fast that wasn’t working as well as it usually does.. So later I did another and made sure to drink a full gallon of water each day and I was losing 3 lbs per day… for 6 days straight. It helps burn fat and it helps to flush the kidneys, which are filtering your sugar from the blood (at least the first couple days).. and it helps you poop well, since you’re not eating, etc.. It’s so beneficial to really take on a lot of water. and you can alternate that with dry fasting; which also has great benefits

    • When I do long term fasting I hardly get thirsty and hardly use the restroom. I lose 2 lbs a day when I do though. 3 would be even better though maybe I’ll try to drink more water. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @@mindydiaz9015 I’m almost 6ft and have fairly stocky muscles.. You probably won’t get over your 2 lbs per day, just because of your size and muscle mass, etc. But 2 lbs per day still adds up quickly. Don’t be afraid to fast for a whole week. You feel great doing it. Some people like dry fasting, but I hat3 it. I’d much rather load up on water and drink a LOT, than to do without.

  7. I’ve been doing keto since May 10, 2019, lost about 60 lbs, kept it off until about the last 8 months, I have had a lot of stress and haven’t been sleeping well consistently. I have gained about 8 pounds while still eating the same.

  8. Dr berg. How do you break a weight set point? I’ve been plateud at 200lb for over 3 years now. I’ve been full carnivore, got my health back and lost 70lb. I have about 45lb left to lose for my height (5ft6in) and the fat won’t budge. I’ve tried everything. Nothing is working. This set point

    • I was in the same situation and I started including fasting periods until I was able to complete a 6 days fasting. That worked incredibly for me, I lost weight and it did not come back anymore. Also check if you have some kind of gut dysbiosis. Candida is usually behind some serious cases of not losing weight

    • Do exercise that burns lots of calories while increasing your muscle mass (weightlifting is probably the best) which will increase your metabolism at rest therefore allowing your body to burn even more calories throughout the day. Also being in a slight caloric deficit at the same time will help

    • That means you’re eating too many calories even if it’s carnivore… too many calories will always keep weight on

  9. Intense exercise does you more harm than good. In my younger years I was a bodybuilder. The one phrase that bugged me more than anything, “no pain, no gain.” Absolute nonsense. I got more gains without the stiffness and soreness associated with overtraining. The body wasn’t designed to overworking it.

  10. Let’s be honest: corporations use ingredients that are illegal in other countries but in the US we blame the consumer.

    • The consumer happily buys garbage and takes no responsibility for learning what they are consuming.

    • @@janedough6575 Tha’ts because it’s normalized. I went overseas twice this year. The difference is astounding.

    • @@gigilamoore2656 normalized by who? I grew up in a family where we were not allowed soda. Most of my friends drink soda because their family allowed it. I’m 57 now and still don’t drink soda. It’s not society, it is your personal choices.

    • @@mommabear5059 I’m 52 so I am from the generation where fast food was a rare treat, we ate at home and yeah we consumed soda and snacks. However, we were also outside all day. Your household and mine are not the arbiters of how most people grew up. Also, at the ripe old age of 57, you can’t sit here and tell me that there aren’t more chemicals in US food or that the food industries are in bed with politicians, the AMA, the ADA and every other “A”.

This bad food is pushed on us (remember the campaign that HFCS was ok?) and then we are pushed into healthcare “treatment” which never cures anything but keeps us reaching for more and more medications.

  11. One of the main problems is that the “sugar free “ items you showed in the beginning aren’t food. Things will improve when people learn the difference between food and not-food.

  12. A year ago I decided enough pain. Started with Jinger fennel tea. Right away the pin’s and needles in my feet went away.
After that adjusted total diet. Trying everything
Now at the weight I like and the numbness in my toes is gone.
Your one of the doctors I learned to trust. Thanks allot 🤓😽🖖

  13. The worst prescription I heard of;

A woman complained that a specific weight loss program didn’t work and then let out that she was on an anti-depressant that caused weight gain.

I told her that rather than blaming the program, she needed to blame the drug that causes weight gain and is defeating her efforts. I also told her that she needed to a different doctor.

There is absolutely no logic in prescribing an anti-depressant that causes weight gain, to a patient that is depressed about not being able to lose weight. I am of the opinion that doing so; is medical malpractice.

    • With all anti-depressants it’s the same, there is no antidepressant without weight gain. The doctor has no solution, I changed 100 doctors and no solution found. Only one medication helped with weight gain, but produced hypertension.

    • @@danielastoica3354
Years ago, my doctor gave me an anti-depressant. I took one pill one time and that was the last time I took it. The way that drug made me feel was a hundred fold worse than dealing with the depression.

It was later that I noticed that when I did not take vitamin D3, I had more days when I was down than when I taking vitamin D3 so I made it a regular supplement in my diet.

The first step a doctor should always take when dealing with a patient that has depression is make sure the patient is not suffering from nutritional deficiencies like vitamin D which does cause depression in people, or some other physical malady that can cause depression.

Seasonal depression is a real thing, and if a person has a vitamin D deficiency year round, the depression is likely to be year round.

  14. Glorious tan. I personally have felt better in the last three years because I sit in the sun with no sunscreen.
