  1. Vo2 max and mortality isn’t the same as VO2 max and longevity for those in the upper quintiles where little difference is shown

    • Longevity is determined by mortality over a lifetime, not just by mortality at any given point. Something can lower your mortality now but raise it in 10 years and vice versa.

    • EXACTLY! “Randomized trial with huge errors” lol, while Peter is still selling AG1, you know the supplement founded by a scam artist who once even said, we should eat dirt. True story

    • @@GiladThe1st Smoking has a much clearer method of action of increasing mortality. Smoking causes lung cancer, which can be measured in the lungs, which causes death. We can also measure the effects of 2nd hand smoke, pollution, and even living near a restaurant smoke stack all causing shortened lifespan from lung cancer.

Ability to train at high intensities might be an effect of good health. But even if it is the cause, increased lifespan in your 70s from high training could lead to dying earlier do to stem cell exhaustion and increased DNA damage, compared to those who did light to moderate exercise.

  2. Not sure but it can’t hurt. Primarily focusing on retaining muscle. Never skip leg day! Got to watch that back and no ego lifting

  3. Good vid as always!
What is your insight on the role of the EEA’s in relation to longevity? A lot of contradictory data out there.

  4. I’m a 56yo female with a VO2 Max of 52. I must be doing a few things right. I’ve been running since 2011.

    • @@KasKade7 This number is from a Garmin Forerunner 955, though a lab test a few years ago was very close. I’ve run 21 marathons and average 40-50 miles per week. At least Garmin will help me see trends.

  5. Awesome you did a video on this, yet there are still some things about that specific study that stands out. As you mentioned, the categories for extremely fit vs very unfit is scewed towards the low end. The 300 percent is misleading imo as the people in the lowest categories have such a low VO2 max that they almost can’t function and almost certaintly have disabilites/major health issues. When I read the study, despite their sensitivity analysis, it reads like VO2max here is mostly a proxy for other health markers.

The explanation that VO2 max is a good indicator of general physical activity also hints that something is off, as almost all other meta-analysis only show 20-50 percent decreased risk of mortality in highest versus lowest quantile of exercise/physical activity groups. Lastly, the fact that the study found that smoking vs non-smoking only increased risk of mortality by 40 percent signals, to me at least, that something is off with the analysis. As you said, smoking is consistently associated with a 100-300 increase in most meta analysis even after adjustment.

Not saying that increasing your VO2max doesn’t reduce your risk of mortality, I’m sure it does, but something is definitely off with that study.

  6. Peter is one of the most intelligent guy in the field of health and longevity. He is unique in his field

  7. I think Attia is making almost the exact same mistake with V02 max as people who think increasing grip strength will improve life expectancy.

  8. a part of the association with mortality and VO2 max is reverse causality but evn the last studies don’t meseasures it precisely

  9. We don’t see elite athletes or elder athletes blowing the rest of the field away in terms of longevity. When we look at those with elite cardio fitness they often only outlive the general population, on average, by 5 years, living to 77 instead of 72 for males. (The general population smokes, drinks and eats ultra processed food.) Oympic cyclists don’t outlive Olympic golfers according to the BMJ. This is why people are skeptical of V02 max as having significant influence on lifespan.

    • My dad is 85, never had any significant cardio level of fitness, and is outliving many of those with elite cardio. He also eats ice cream and takes his statins and BP medicine.

    • I still think it makes sense to train, but I don’t think having a high VO2 max will be responsible for getting you into your 80s or beyond. Other factors are likely more important.

    • High V02 max, makes you more likely to live to 78 but less likely to live to 100. It causes stem cell exhaustion that will kill you earlier than your peers who did moderate exercise, and ate healthy.

  10. The point is not to achieve elite status but rather in good shape from vo2 max and grip strength.

  11. Apple watch ultra regularly measures 20 met when I do things like swimming and 15+ for some other activities. It doesn’t seem like it is based on heart rate. I hope it was accurate but I am pretty sure something is seriously wrong.

  12. Hi Siim, I have a Bon Charge sauna blanket since two months, Its great, but not made of Pure Leather,
However its made of Polyurethane leather (not leather), cotton and PVC.

  13. I’m really looking for a video that supports my belief that I can keep smoking, suck down grease ball burgers daily, drink a 3 liter of coke per day while sitting around in my office chair and couch—-but still have a chance to live a long time…..

  14. Misleading title. You want more clicks, but you’re basically repeating the same thing that Dr. Attia has been saying.

  15. I don’t know if this was taken into account during the study; but I think it is not unreasonable to assume that people who met the criteria for „extremely fit“ most likely had a healthier diet regiment, right?
