Here are the 7 worst diets for weight loss and your health.

1. Junk food version of the Atkins diet
The Atkins diet brand sells shakes and bars full of unhealthy ingredients such as soy protein isolate, soybean oil, artificial flavoring, and polydextrose.

2. Jenny Craig diet
This diet consists of pre-made meals and the “anytime bar” that contains soy protein isolate and concentrated milk protein. Jenny Craig pre-made meals contain synthetic starches such as potato flour, cornstarch, modified food starch, and maltodextrin.

3. WeightWatchers
This diet is based on portion control. WeightWatchers sells a brand called Smart Ones, which makes chicken pasta that contains wheat flour, wheat gluten, maltodextrin, soy protein isolates, and soybean oil—the same ultra-processed ingredients found in junk food.

4. Nutrisystem diet
The Nutrisystem diet claims to be diabetic-friendly but uses the same ingredients, such as polydextrose and maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is 185 on the glycemic index compared to sugar, which is 65.

5. Ideal protein diet
The ideal protein diet is not ideal! Wheat protein isolate is just another name for starch, which is a chain of sugars.

6. Optifast
This medically supervised diet program consists of three main types of food: shakes, bars, and soups. The first ingredient in their chocolate shake is maltodextrin!

7. Medifast
This “scientifically designed” program consists of 6 servings per day. One of their products is called the essential chocolate mint cookie crisp bar. Once again, this bar contains soy protein isolates, sugar, polydextrose, soluble corn fiber, brown rice syrup, milk protein isolates, and rice starch.

If you use these ultra-processed ingredients to lose weight, you will destroy your metabolism! These are very poor quality ingredients that do not promote health. They are the prime contributors to diabetes and obesity, yet they’re in “diet” foods.

To lose weight, consume whole foods and read ingredient lists! Just because a product is labeled “keto-friendly” doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

  4. 25 years ago Jenny Craig wanted to hire me to write prescriptions for phenomenal and another medication. I wouldn’t be allowed to counsel anyone and if I did they would fine me $50,000. Needless to say I didn’t do it. Six months later those medications were identified as causing cardiac issues and pulled from the market.

    • It’s definitely addictive, and people are too lazy to cook. Lean protein and fresh vegetables are quicker to prepare and eat, but often they’re more expensive than processed foods.
      That tells you the quality of food you’re eating.

  7. I lost 40lbs in two months following meditast but it was something I could not transition from without gaining lots of weight back

    • Probably a bulk of the “weight” lost was water, which will be regained if you resort to the same diet choices that lead to the problem in the first place. Don’t underestimate the value of exercise and a keto diet.

  8. Dr Berg…I’m 63 and have had misophonia since I was a child. I always have to eat alone and live most of my life with Bose Noise Cancelling headphones with a White Noise App. I appreciate you listening to my feedback about the sound effects with graphic changes. I can continue to watch your videos without being highly stressed.

  9. I was diagnosed diabetic on May 20th. I had moved and found a local Healthcare clinic. My visit was with a PA. I went for other issues but she saw some lab results ( from an Urgent care visit in April) so began with more labs including my A1C and cholesterol. I’ll be 60 next week and I’ve never had these 2 checked. Both high. I began cutting out carbs, and watched calories . I’ve lost 31.5 pounds, my blood sugar is regulated and blood pressure back in the normal range. I go back to the PA for my 3 month check up and follow up with a new A1C and cholesterol level. I’m excited to see the newest numbers. My diagnosis for diabetes was a shock. I had zero of the usual symptoms.
    The past 3 years ( prior) to my clinic visit I’ve been through alot of devastating things in my life. I sat in my room for over 2 years rarely leaving my house. The weight poured on. Thankfully I’ve gotten my life back spiritually, mentally and physically.
    I now have a new situation and I’ll go through it and continue my new healthy lifestyle choices.. my husband of 40.5 years told me he’s leaving me this next week. Happy 60th birthday to me huh?? He was going to be out this weekend but we’ve had 9 days of nonstop rain mostly from tropical storm Debby. Finally clearing up so he’ll be moving out. I’ll make it. My health is my #1 priority right now…

      I too have undergone so much change this past year, after being mostly isolated for a couple years ‘in my room’. Im 57, and like you I took back control and have grown leaps and bounds physically, spiritually and mentally. I lost 40 lbs and have educated myself against the terrible practices of our food industry. I can -so- relate to your post, I had to comment. ❤ I’ve been divorced for years and I’m here to tell you, at this age, you WILL be okay without him. Being alone doent mean lonely. I cherish doing my own thing and not having to worry about what someone else is saying or doing anymore. I love my grandkids and pets and I’m just fine 🥰
      I’m so thankful for Dr. Bergs help through this take-back-control season in my life. I have no doubt his valuable info has added years and -quality- of those years to my life. My prayer is for your continued success and happiness in your upcoming seasons, truly ❤ 🙏

    • You’ll be better off overall. You’re already off to a good start.
      It can be devastating to lose someone that’s been in your life for so long but now’s your chance to do for yourself, it’s okay to be selfish instead of always selfless.
      As far as diet goes, I’ve seen so many fail because of the people around them (usually close family) because they have to cook different meals or feel peer pressure or doubt.

    • You’re not alone, I’ve had three long time girlfriends choose to leave very near or on my birthday. Each one later asked to come back, no thanks.
      You can do better, take care of yourself. Without your health its all bad news.

  10. I had to go completely carnivore to get away of the fake food sold to me as Keto and great food to lower my glucose. Thank you for your videos that have provided so much education to me on how to avoid glucose and starch.
