Vitamin D is not a vitamin; it’s a hormone intimately involved in 10% of our genes. If you don’t have enough vitamin D, it can interfere with the genes responsible for hair growth. There is also a very high concentration of vitamin D receptors in the hair follicle.

Without enough vitamin D, your immune system is at risk of autoimmune conditions, including alopecia. Vitamin D supports the T cells that help combat autoimmune diseases. Psoriasis, dandruff, and dermatitis are also related to low vitamin D.

Magnesium is the most potent regulator of calcium and is involved with enzymes important for hair health. It’s also essential for the proper function of vitamin D.

There are 2 systems of vitamin D: one that controls calcium and one that has several functions, including hair growth and hair restoration. This form of vitamin D has a 24-hour half-life, so you need daily sun or supplements to prevent a hair loss problem.

There is a worldwide vitamin D deficiency epidemic! Several factors contribute to this massive vitamin D deficiency problem, including genetics, skin color, insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, and air pollution.

Your blood vitamin D levels should be at least 70 to 100 ng/mL. You need at least 20,000 IU of vitamin D daily and 50 mg of magnesium to support hair growth. Zinc, iron, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for hair restoration.

Key genes involved in hair growth:
1. Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) gene
2. WNT genes
3. BMP (Bone Morphogenetic Protein) genes
4. FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor) genes
5. TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor-Beta) genes
6. LEF1 (Lymphoid Enhancer-Binding Factor 1)
7. PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor)
8. Dkk (Dickkopf WNT Signaling Pathway Inhibitor) genes
9. CTNNB1 (Beta-Catenin)

I found out that kindness helps with serotonin oxytocin and dopamine and I feel like a brand new person.

  5. As a fellow health YouTuber, I just wanted to commend you on this insightful video, Dr. Berg! The connection between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases, particularly in relation to hair loss, is often overlooked in discussions about hair health.

It’s fascinating how many people are unaware that hair follicles are living structures and that their health is influenced by various nutrients. Your emphasis on the importance of the right blood tests to identify deficiencies is crucial. Many individuals may not realize that conditions like alopecia can be linked to nutrient imbalances, and your video sheds light on this important aspect.

Additionally, I appreciate your mention of magnesium’s role in enzyme function related to hair health. It’s a reminder that a holistic approach to nutrition can significantly impact our overall well-being, including hair growth.

For anyone watching, I encourage you to not only consider the tests mentioned but also to consult with a healthcare professional to interpret results accurately. Thank you for sharing this valuable information, and I look forward to more content that empowers viewers to take charge of their health!

  6. I was receding a bit over the years. I stopped smoking in 2020 and kicked my prescriptions in Feb 2023 and I started going outside even. My hairline grew back a bit. I noticed it was less far back when I started shaving my head since February of 2024 and as it grew back I noticed this

  7. Im female and started to lose my hair at the age of 17, the hairloss was so hard that my relatives noticed I didn’t have thick hair anymore and the reason was unknown. I didn’t take any vitamins at that time, I always thought it because of the puberty then coz of pregnancy, but after 20years I have made a blood test. It has shown that i have very low d3 and iron.
My daughter started also lose her hair at the age of 10,and the doctors say that her blood test is excellent. She lose hair, coz of spring)))
So now this video helped me to understand what is the real reason for our hairloss. Dr.Berg, thank you!

    • About 20 years ago I was very healthy. I ate very healthy (clean eating). I had the least stress in my life finally. My thyroid was fine. I was regularly seeing a nutritionist along with my doctor. My blood tests were finally normal and good. Finally I started on Iron. It took many months but my hair loss was no longer extreme.

  8. I have been fighting hair loss for a many of years. I pray this will help. Thank you Dr. Berg for the new info 🙏🏽

    • @lindachastang98
Could it be because of menopause? Because many of us women start to lose hair when we start menopause 😢

    • @@Drberg Would you please not make those silly faces in your thumbnails? That’s usually something done for kids videos, not for adults. It makes me embarrassed to share your videos with other professional adults. I’ve seen many people in the comments request this. We think it undermines the importance of the information provided. It makes me not want to click.

    • Thank you for this video. I’ve been losing hair for some months now. Probably lost about 30 40% of my hair. I take 10000 iu vitamin d, zinc, magnesium sometimes. I think now I will increase my vitamin d and certainly take a magnesium supplement each day. Finger crossed this helps. Very interesting information. Thank you again. UK subscriber.

  9. I wish I would’ve had this information when I was younger. I’m bald now at 63. I use rosemary oil, black castor oil, and other things. I have had some regrowth and darkening, but it’s too late. Some of the follicles have died.

    • Look at Dr Bergs video on Knox gelatin. I mix one heaping tablespoon of Knox gelatin dry in my coffee cup with a pinch of pink Himalayan salt and I pour hot coffee over it stir with your spoon and then put grass fed butter or coconut oil into your cup with liquid stevia to taste. I look like a Viking man with a full beard and hair

  10. So, I’ve been losing my hair this year and no Dr’s know why (also have lost 40lbs in 4mth and can’t gain wt. I had to wo 24×7 to keep my weight down before this year). Anyways, I just increased my Vit D3 for autoimmune and I have seen my hair stopped coming out in handfuls!
Keep on Dr. B! YOU are changing lives and I’m thankful for finding you. As a RN, you are the best Dr. I’ve ever listened too❤

    • Same symptoms here. Mine turned out to be hyperthyroidism brought on by overuse of iodine supplement (Biote) which was 8333% of my RDA of potassium iodide… took me three years to return to balance.

  11. I’m 63 year old man. I get plenty of sun, eat wild salmon and eggs. I take extra D3K2. I have shoulder length healthy hair.

  12. My theory on why Vitamin D works to stop hair loss is due to Calcium. Vitamin D increases the absorption of Calcium by 20x. I took 10,000 IU per day for 5 months and it did nothing. Its only when i started increasing my calcium intake that my hair stopped shedding. Calcium is imperative for healthy hair growth as : It aids hormone and enzyme secretion, including biotin enzymes and androgen hormones responsible for healthy hair growth. It also helps in absorption of iron which is strongly associated with healthy hair.

    • @@rvo3333 Dairy is the easiest way to add more calcium to your diet. Milk, cheese and yogurt are great sources.

    • @@Toronto4evr you shouldn’t be really supplementing calcium unless you show that you are calcium deficient on your blood test. A healthy diet gives sufficient amounts of the calcium our body needs any excess will end up in places you don’t want calcium to go to like your arteries. That’s why we have to take K2 and Magnesium to make sure the Calcium goes into our bones and not anywhere else. Lot of doctors are stepping back from prescribing calcium as our diet these days is plentiful in calcium. Any excess of any vitamin is not good except for vitamin D3.

  13. I’m so fed up with this “shocked” faces everywhere. Like all we need is another shock. I want to go back to the normal world.

  14. IT’S JUST GENETIC LUCK – 59 year old male here. My grandfathers went bald. My father went bald. My younger brother went bald. I lucked out and still have a full head of thick dark hair. I have no idea why my hair didn’t fall out.

  15. I have an autoimmune disease and I was extremely low in Vit D. After taking Vit D3 with Vit K2 and Mag I reached remission I also changed to a low carb diet as well. Thank you so much Dr Berg.
