High-sugar diets can significantly affect your vitamin B1 levels. A vitamin B1 deficiency can cause fluid retention and lactic acid buildup, which can show up as restless legs syndrome. Many complications associated with diabetes type 1 and type 2 are related to vitamin B1 deficiency.

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, supports a healthy nervous system and the process that turns fuel into usable energy in the body.

Here are some of the warning signs of vitamin B1 deficiency:
•Nervous tension
•Irritability
•Restlessness
•Brain fog
•Air hunger
•Numbness on the bottom of feet and/or fingertips
•Hand tremors
•Confusion
•Low pulse rate
•Personality changes
•Low tolerance to stress
•Loss of coordination
•Headaches
•Constipation
•Insomnia

Allithiamine is a fat-soluble natural form of vitamin B1, which easily permeates the cell membrane and the blood-brain barrier. Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1 that may be beneficial for people with blood sugar issues.

Pork, beef, organ meats, eggs, fish, and nuts are the best food sources of vitamin B1. Unfortified nutritional yeast is also a good source.

  1. The video discusses the relationship between sugar consumption and vitamin B1 deficiency. It explains how high sugar intake depletes B1, leading to various health issues. The video covers B1 functions, deficiency symptoms, natural vs. synthetic forms, and food sources.

  2. I appreciate you being honest about your own past eating habits I’m there at this point but I’ve never had the pounding in my ear

    • Pounding in his ear,
I think he’s just referring to how when he (and I) eat a lot of carbs and junk food, if you are a side sleeper you may notice the ear touching the pillow will hear the heartbeat amplified, like it’s pumping harder and louder due to all the junk food, it’s almost like the body is under attack trying to digest all the junk and the heart beats heavier and sounds louder .

  3. I usually never comment but I saw most of your videos and read comments to them. I have one thing to say, you are a gem!

  4. Let’s keep in mind, pharmaceutical companies often make prescriptions to make you crave all of this, I have a family member that was given prednisone, and it caused them intense craving for junk food, not to mention depression. I believe natural supplements and good food, and herbs are the way to go, but the government will never put the study in the forefront so thank you Dr. Berg.

  5. Since I eliminated carbs/sugar and started consuming nutritional yeast and more meat, I noticed that my hands are less shaky, I no longer have nerve spasms and random colorful spots in my eyesight, and I feel calmer and less stressed.

  6. So encouraged by hearing what you have overcome in your life. I just thought you were always perfect. Thank you dr. B

  7. Thank you for this! I couldn’t figure out why all this was happening to me for several years. Now at long last I know and can try to get my metabolism back in shape. One year ago I started to slowly come out of the worst brain fog and had gotten so ill and couldn’t figure it out. Now am making many changes that I wish I could have known about earlier. Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge of nutrition. There may be hope for many of us yet!

  10. I started chewing seven Dr. Berg® nutritional yeast tablets daily. It transformed my life-long struggle with anxiety and allowed me to stop 20+ years of anti-anxiety medications. I have added Allithiamine and Benfotiamine and yes I take Magnesium Glycinate as well which is recommended when taking B1. I purchase from Dr Berg’s website. I’m not being paid for this post. I just want to express my appreciation to Dr Berg for the knowledge and inspiration his videos bring.

  11. This post really opens your eyes to the often-overlooked impact of high-carb diets on vitamin B1 deficiency, and it’s fascinating to see just how deeply sugar and refined carbs can deplete our B1 levels. It explains how seemingly unrelated symptoms—fatigue, sleep issues, even Restless Leg Syndrome—could actually stem from something as simple as lacking vitamin B1. I had no idea about the differences between synthetic and natural B1, or that magnesium is essential to make it work! Thanks for sharing such valuable information on this hidden but important health topic!
