*** Observe: This treatment is extremely effective. If you have diabetes and take blood sugar lowering medication (especially insulin injections) you may need to reduce the doses a lot to avoid potentially dangerous hypoglycemia. You may instantly become too healthy for your medication. ***

In the full 45 minute interview Dr. Fung goes into more detail about exactly how to add fasting to your low-carb diet, important things to consider and how to avoid potential problems.

  1. Dr. Fung is the Asian twin to Dr. Sebi 💕 so much respect. This is a person who takes his oath seriously. “Do no harm” 💕 very knowledgeable! This is how a doctor’s visit SHOULD go, honestly. So many doctors are way too quick to prescribe medication before thoroughly educating their patients on the science behind their conditions. Medication should ALWAYS be a last resort 💯

  2. I’m nearly 60 years old, not type 2 diabetic, but I was overweight and feeling unfit and had stiff joints. I gave up sugary foods and seriously cut back carbs such as potatoes, rice and pasta. Also ate much less in general and I lost 30lbs in 4 months and am now feeling 20 years younger. No more stiff joints, a much flatter belly and just feeling great. Certainly works for me.

    • As we age our bodies need a lot less food I believe, and that is why middle aged people and older can gain a lot of weight because they are eating what they are used to eating mentally but the body doesn’t need that much any more, so it’s a mismatch. It’s a tough thing in some ways because people have very ingrained habits with food and don’t want to suddenly cut down what they are eating, that is the challenge, to eat about half of what they are used to eating. I find that I don’t get as hungry eating less, I guess smaller portions of lower carb foods help to reduce the rollercoasting blood sugars that can cause that horrible sinking feeling after having been spiked by carbs and then dropping down, creating hunger pangs and other unpleasant feelings leading to craving carbs. Carbs do cause blood glucose spikes so cutting back on starchy/sugary foods and having more protein and a bit of fat which helps to slow down spikes should feel better.

    • How can I start fasting when I feel hungry if I don’t take anything before 9.00am. How can I do it?

  3. Omg, this is the first time I have heard a doctor say, treat the disease and not the symptom! Finally someone who makes total sense:-))

    • A man with an independent brain ❣❣
I wish my brother could’ve seen this doctor.😥

    • @Reasoner Enlightened I use to think the same as you, I guess because I wasn’t having symptoms at the time. I was diagnosed with pre type 2. I disregarded the whole idea of diabetes because I felt fine. But over the next 20 years, symptoms krept up on me and now I have the beginnings of neuropathy in my toes. My glucose levels are between 145-220 in the morning. The day after I started restricting my carb intake, it slid down to 135 one morning. I just began my journey. Any weight loss will be an added prize. Lol but when you start having symptoms of type 1, will power has nothing to do with it. Fact is… At that point, your in fear of your life. You go into defence mode. Figure out the problem and, like the Dr said, fix IT!. VERY knowledgeable man. Be but yeah carbs and hidden carbs are literally killing folks! And they have no idea that that large chocolate shake they just drank had 120 carbs in it. That’s begging for insulin resistance! Like a drug.

  4. I was diagnosed with type 2 and did EVERYTHING my doctors said. Did the xigduo, metformin, bp pills’ statins. I still kept getting sicker. I was a mess.
I listened to Dr Fung a few times and followed his logic. In a matter of 3 or 4 months I took myself off all medications. For the last year my BP, cholesterol and A1C have all been great. Thanks to Dr Fung I have a normal life and hope for the furure.

    • I am just thrilled to hear your story! Working in home health, I’ve had only 2 or 3 patients resolve or at least manage their diabetes with lifestyle changes. I know 2 for certain actually got OFF dialysis! The funny thing was, they were somewhat nonchalant about it LOL. So I said, “You do realize how big this is right? Nobody ever does this.” I’m so proud of you and them and everyone else who achieves this milestone. Lastly, I am inspired by you because I recently began drastically reducing my carb intake. Many times it’s hard to remember why I’m making this change so I’m happy to hear about victories like yours.

    • @Robin Moore Low carb, less than 20mg. carbs per day. Eat all fresh vegetables with a little fruit. No wheat, white potatoes, sugar, beans, pasta, rice, no grains and no vegetable oil! because they are all high in carbs. If it comes in a box, bag, can, or jar with more that one ingredient (not counting water) it is no good! Eat all of your meals from the produce and meat department. One ingredient meats, one ingredient vegetables, and one ingredient fruits. In the beginning limit your fruits to occasional berries. After you lose the weight you want to lose you can add more fruits. You can get the carb counts for your meals on google. But if you are going to limit your carbs to 20mg per day you must replace those carbs with fat of some kind.. You can use real butter, (not margarine) lard or animal fat to cook with, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil. And you must take electrolytes! I know that we have been mislead all of our lives about the fat myth. believe me it was hard for me to except at first! But I started slow. First I just cut out all sugar! Then I cut out anything that turns to sugar ie: wheat, or anything made with wheat, pasta, white potatoes, rice. Then all fruits except berries. The hardest thing for me is the bread!!! but you learn to deal! At first I was not happy with my progress for the first month and I almost quit but I stuck in there and after the second month I ha lost 10lbs. I am now on my fourth month and Im down 40lbs. And I am off all diebetes medicines and off high blood pressure medicine! I will never go back!! Good luck on your journey!

  5. After a successful 72 hour fast, two days of eating and a full day of fasting yesterday my sugar levels are at 4 this morning – no shakes and feeling great. No medication. In the past when I had a 4 with metformin and insulin I had the shakes and binged on sugar to feel right. Additionally, I am 5 pounds away from the lower range of my ideal weight and my stomach is the flattest I have seen it since I came back from Greece 20 years ago where I literally walked my butt off for a month.

  6. Dr. Fung is absolutely correct about intermittent fasting. As one of my strategies of correcting insulin resistance in my own body I began intermittent fasting. I eat nothing from about 7 PM to noon the next day. It has worked wonders. I am not hungry at all each morning and do not crave breakfast. My A1C is going down.

  7. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a MMOL 97 in January. 6 months later it was MMOL 39. I started fasting 16:8 and reduced my carbs and now I am remission. My GP was amazed and couldn’t believe I hadn’t taken my prescription. This really works.

  8. I Worked in medical field for long time, this is the first time to watch a Dr. Who shares his thoughts, knowledge, expertise and experience to the people… More blessings to you Dr. Jason Fung

  9. I used to get mad at my diabetic grandma for fasting during Ramadan, believing it would make her condition worse. She always said she felt much better while fasting. Wish we had known better.

    • Religion stops people from thinking right, not that people are thinking right when they have not religion.
Those who fast have to fast in accordance with their health; otherwise, they get sick and sicker. Remember we do nothing for God, He does for us.

    • “But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.”

      Quran 2:216

  10. He has most likely added decades to my life. No meds and down 40 lbs in 4 months. Haven’t ate in 22 hrs and I’m barely hungry. Just left the gym. Did 60 mins on the elliptical and bench pressed.

  11. *My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*

    • Yes, unfortunately this disease is happening earlier and earlier among children, try to help your daughter as soon as possible, research a lot, health and peace

    • Hello as a paramedic I was taught type 1 diabetics are born with it, and type 2 acquire it due to lifestyle. . That being said my wife’s nephew was a healthy 14-year-old young man and in a matter of 4 weeks became type -1 losing 45 pounds almost overnight, the doctors say it is a form of diabetic autoimmune disease, up to this point I had never heard or observed this before. Do diabetes or autoimmune diseases run in your child’s family history? I personally would monitor your child’s blood sugar 3 x daily, talk to their pediatrician and stay vigilant.

  12. Unbelievable how a guy can take such a complex issue and make it so easily understandable. He’s had a tremendous impact on my health. I wish I’d heard this message 40+ years ago.

  13. Dr Fung is my hero! I was diagnosed last May with A1C 12. I took jardiance duo and metfo.
I have done the combination of intermittent fasting, exercise and low carb diet.
In the 2nd month of it, my doc told me to go off med after seeing my daily FG everyday for a week. Iwas very happy, and keep doing what i have been doing till now (and, i hope, forever)
Last month, I checked my recent A1C and I am on 5,5. Couldnt be happier than this.

He is truly a hero.. Thank you , doc.

  14. Dr Fung is my hero. In January 2021 I was 55 yrs old in menopause and more than 100 lbs over weight. I had quit smoking the year before and in menopause. Even though I thought I was eating healthier the weight was staying on. I was too exhausted to exercise and was restricting my calories. I started watching Dt Fung. I tossed my high carb cereal and low fat options and went strictly low carb about 20 net carbs a day and started intermittent fasting 16 hours a day. I am doing healthy keto more plant based keto and extended fasts for up to 3 days a week. I am 15 lbs away from loosing 130 lbs. I am so thankful for you Dr Fung. You changed my life. 😊

    • Congratulations. Our family is vegetarian. Can you please give suggestions for how to eat super low carb on a plant based diet?

    • @cherishgp To eat low carb on a vegetarian diet you need to eat a lot of leafy greens. Only eat one ingredient foods. You can have other fresh vegetables too, but they are higher in carbs than leafy greens! And If it comes in a box or a package or a can with more than one ingredient. (not counting water as an ingredient) then it is no good! No wheat, no grains, no beans because they are high in carbs. And the one thing that most people dont understand is that if you dont do carbs then you must replace them with fat, because your body has to use either carbs or fat as feul! You can use fats such as olive oil, avacado oil, or coconut oil as your fat source instead of animal fats, but you must do some kind of fat! And you must have electrolytes, or you will regret it!

  15. As of today, I have been a diabetic over 20 years. My doctor always told me that cut out the red meat and work out. Over last 20 years I have not even lost one pound but I ended up gaining weight. My doctor told me that I will have diabetes for the rest of my life. He also said that I will run out of insulin soon if I don’t cut of red meat and work out.
3–5-2022 I had a blood test. Found out that I have high proteins in my urine.
4-14-2022 I had a CT Scan. I ended up with fatty liver and a lot of gallstones on my right kidney.
That’s when I started to google on YouTube found my life saver Dr. Eric Berg and Dr. Jason Fung. I started eating Keto and Intermittent Fasting.
    As of today 6-4-2022
    My ( HGB A1C) is 5.6
    My ( Cholesterol ) is high 452
Kidney and liver tests are normal and don’t have Hepatitis C Infection also I lost my dream weight and I am very happy and healthy.
I wish all will with good health and spread the information to all your love one. God Bless.

  16. I’m just so impressed that we have ‘Drs’ out there who actually prioritise treating the disease in a natural way as opposed to shoving pharmaceuticals down our throats just to treat the symptoms. Awesome! Appreciate how he talks about fasting as a positive and how religions all over have been saying this all along.

  17. I’m almost a month into my diagnosed type 2 diabetes. I’ve followed the advice of Dr James and after the first week I stopped the meds. I’m doing 16 to 18 hours fasting, I’ve lost 14.5 pounds so far. Great advice 👍🏻
