22:32 An important tip for type 1 diabetes

We have a wonderful guest with us today! Manuel Suarez is going to share his incredible story and how he uses the keto diet and intermittent fasting as tools to deal with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a situation where you can’t produce insulin, which means you can’t regulate your blood sugar.

A person with type 1 diabetes depends on insulin medication to keep their blood sugar from going too high. But, if you lower your carbohydrates, you can decrease your need for insulin.

High blood sugar is unhealthy, but so is high insulin. The goal is to take the least amount of insulin possible to have normal blood sugar levels.

Before keto and fasting, Manuel was taking around 40 units of fast-acting insulin a day and 25 units of long-acting insulin a day.

After being on the keto diet and intermittent fasting, he only takes two to five units of fast-acting insulin daily and ten units of long-acting insulin daily.

One of the components he attributes his success to is exercising regularly. What works best for him is a high-intensity workout for 30 minutes three to four times per week.

A key tip to take away is that if you’re doing OMAD, try having your meal between 2 pm and 3 pm to maximize your results.

I think this interview will encourage you and help answer some of your questions about type 1 diabetes in relation to keto and fasting. Enjoy!

  1. With MY situation ( I have Type 2 ), I had not gone to a doctor. So, I had diabetes for several years before I ended up almost dying . What MY Type 2 did (was not throw me into Type 1 )………but it went over to my liver causing me to get non-alcoholic cirrhosis of my liver. Et voila’, this was how I lived until discovering Dr. Berg and taking control of my two diseases, instead of them controlling me. ❤️

  2. Thank you Dr. Berg you’re the best as usual.
I have a question I’m doing OMAD KETO for 6 months now I have a sweet taste always in my tongue what the reason? Is it good or bad? What to do to get rid of it? Thanks 🙏

  3. Very interesting, thank you! Manuel, do you have content in Spanish? I live in Mexico and am constantly translating for others who are trying to follow a fasting lifestyle, but haven’t found a good resource I can point them to for getting information themselves.

  4. I am very grateful to you Dr Berg as type 1 and was in a lot of trouble over 9 months ago I found your channel and learnt from your channel about keto and intermittent fasting. My diabetes and blood sugar is under control now . My health is great now and losing weight also . The best thing is I don’t have use insulin. OMAD 8 cups of veggies and salad, 220 grams of meat and some nuts less then 20 grams of carbs a day . Thank you . God Bless

  5. Great to see the genius marketing guru who helped Dr Berg become the internet sensation that he is, getting the genius level wellness help from Dr Berg! You both are amazingly talented people who inspire me. Thank you for both for sharing this. This will definitely help thousands of people who need to know this

    • Gurus are bad ‘Coz people follow them blindly. Dr Berg is a huge source of knowledge and interesting stuff. I like his stuff. But don’t take it for granted.’ 😉

    • @SirMorak Interesting. Maybe you can check out the many reviews of how much he’s helped… I think that’s what people enjoy the most… proof of actual results. Mix in consistency and the value and trust is there.

    • @Sally Matsukawa sure I don’t say the opposite 🙂 but he always implies keto answers everything, which is not. But sure for an American population it can solve a lot considering all the sh*tty products they have there.

  6. *Manuel Suarez* — Thank you for sharing your story.
A lot of people in the Latino community suffer from Type 1 Diabetes
So – you would be a great spokesman and advocate for Low Carb – Keto & natural cures.

  7. Great interview!
I definitely recommend the Berg’s electrolyte powder. It’s a must with OMAD and keto.
I feel much better since including this.
    Thanks again!
    Peace and blessings 🙏

    • Gave Dr Berg’s sports version to my bodybuilder son after I heard him complaining about moodiness… he called the next day to mention how great he feels. He is non-keto but he sees my response to keto/IF after only 100 days and is asking the right questions now. The product is a great solution to ‘keto flu’

  8. This is so true, I have 3 type 1 children, keto diet really help their bgl with less insulin, but my younger 2 is still a struggle, they love to eat some carbs so we will get there.

But Keto does work. Thank you Dr Berg

  9. I quit drinking alcohol 2 years ago and I’m feelling great! Sugar it’s next. 2 weeks. 14 days without sugar coming up! Thanks Dr. Berg

  10. Thanks Dr berg for talking bout type 1. I’ve been type 1 for 47 years and it’s been rough at times but since I found your channel and started keto and IF I way more healthy then I’ve ever been. What this guy is saying is true. Most days I eat OMAD as long as blood sugar is good and the less food and strict keto I feel so much better and have so much more energy. I dont know who thought we need 3 meals plus snacks to live but that’s not true. I’ve been able to lose over 80 pounds and lower my insulin from almost 100 units down to 38 units. I’m hoping to get it even lower. One serious question dr berg what in your opinion the best healthy insulin to use if there is such a thing. Im on novolin N and R and would like one more natural. I’ve researched it but can’t seem to find one. When I was first diagnosed I was taking insulin made from pig pancreas. So can you please tell me the best insulin. Thanks for this video and I hope you do more on TYPE 1 DIABETES.

  11. A few years ago I was taken by ambulance to the hospital, when I awoke from intensive care the doctor told me I was lucky to be alive. She said they never seen anyone survive with a sugar level that high, my sugar level was over 1500.

  12. Eating earlier to align with the circadian rhythms is what I strive to do! I don’t know if what I’m attempting to do currently could be considered OMAD, but it was pretty helpful with digestion the day before, after a 48 hour fast.

Post bile salts, I replaced those with ginger and fennel seed and on my first office break of the day (after the 48 hour fast) I have these with some butter to get my juices flowing. Then two hours later I begin lunch (I do all of this at work), and lunch would usually be my OMAD for the day. It gave me such incredible results! I felt the body go after the fat and give my brain and the rest of me energy and it was even easier to concentrate at work! I was only going to do this yesterday but the results were so amazing that I decided to try it again today, but this time I’m adding some sauerkraut and some sea salt to the mix. The practice of priming my gut for proper digestion before lunch may be what I do regularly going forward! Thanks to your advice on what to eat, how much and when, of course.

Thanks to you and your guest, you guys are awesome!

  13. I am from India. My ancestors used to say “Never eat after sunset”. Modern people here call it superstitious but what my ancestors meant was “Never eat too late and have good gap between dinner and your sleep”. Here in India, the sunset occurs between 6.00 p.m – 7.00 p.m. depending upon season.

Btw, a very nice and informative video. Awaiting for more videos.

  14. You are where I was trying to game the system. Trying to test how much of my old life I could hang onto. Testing boundaries. After listening to you today I’m going to embrace the foods that make me feel great and keep me motivated. Thank you.

  15. An excellent conversation on this topic. I am not diabetic, but my Dad was. That did not end well. (understatement) I adopted keto and omad, thanks to Dr. Berg, about 3 years ago now. I lost 50 pounds (1/4 of my body weight at the time), and my health has improved dramatically. The headaches, hip joint pain (excruciating) vanished, and the ravenous continuous hunger simply disappeared. I think this last symptom is the one creating the greatest barrier for the average person to grasp. They literally don’t believe me when I try share the info with them.

  16. I found this positively helpful. I never pondered that: Chronic high insulin being worse than chronic high sugar intake. Intriguing!

  17. Great video that all type 1s need to hear. Type 1 here for 24 years. I started keto 3 years ago then went lazy carnivore. I was taking 107 units of insulin a day and am now down to 16 units a day.

  18. My husband became Type 1 Diabetic at 39… This does not run in his family and they contributed it to severe food poisoning, which he did have prior to his diagnosis. I see him everyday struggle to keep it all balanced. He is now 54. It is real tough. Thank you for this GREAT VIDEO.
