Today we're going to talk about what you should drink while fasting and what you shouldn't drink while fasting.

I have done other videos on acceptable liquids while fasting, but I'm always getting new information and updating my videos so you can get the best and most current information.

Keep in mind that calories matter when it comes to fasting. The more calories you consume, the more problems you'll have while fasting.

Drinks not to consume while fasting:
• Bone broth
• Collagen powder
• BCAA
• Coconut water
• Coffee with sugar or flavors
• Pre-workout drinks
• Energy drinks
• Sports drinks
• Commercial electrolyte drinks (electrolyte powder sweetened with a natural sweetener like stevia is fine)
• Soda with artificial sweeteners (sodas with stevia, xylitol, erythritol, or monk fruit are fine)
• Beer and alcohol
• Soy drinks
• Milk
• Drinks with bouillon cubes (if the bouillon doesn't have MSG and maltodextrin, then it's fine to have)

Drinks that are acceptable but may set you back just slightly:
• Bulletproof coffee
• Coffee with a small amount of half-and-half or cream
• Dry wine
• Almond milk (check the ingredients)

Drinks you can have while fasting:
• Water (carbonated water, water with electrolytes, and water with apple cider vinegar, lemon, or lime are all fine)
• Tea
• Black coffee

It's important to consume sea salt while fasting—you can add sea salt to your drinks throughout the day.

You can also take supplements while fasting as long as they aren't protein powders. It can actually be beneficial to take supplements while fasting.

  1. I tried a couple of your electrolyte powders. I could honestly say that the amount of stevia for my liking is way too much. Could you please consider making a non-sweetened electrolyte powder? Thanks Dr. Berg!

    • There are many videos in Dr Berg’s library that cover the whole issue of supplements vs vitamins and when and why you might choose one over the other, so do some study and find out which apply to you. As a general guide for best absorption vitamins/minerals occurs with a meal – not sure a FULL stomach is something to aspire to.

    • I take magnesium glyconate but it says on the bottle – ‘do not take on empty stomache’. A lot of “fasting” I do with coconut oil / coffee so I can take vitamins.

  2. I actually use vegan cream with my coffee to control estrogen levels, and stomach cramps, and started recently to fast between breakfast & lunch, with no dinners. Thanks for the info Dr Berg 🌸

    • My rule of thumb is no eating past 3 pm. And max two meals a day, ideally only one. A lot of water in-between, but no drinking one hour before and after a meal.

    • @Chrysanthemum Lewis it depends where you live: in the UK: bigger Sainsbury’s, in the US possibly bigger Walmarts or just order from Amazon, and regards the gas: the best drink ever to get red if them is a mix of turmeric & fenugreek drink.

  3. 0:34 Drinks you need to avoid while fasting:
    • Bone broth: because it has protein and protein stimulate insulin
    • Collagen powder: same issue as bone broth
    • Branch Chain Amino Acids: same issue as bone broth
    • Coconut water: because it has a good amount of sugar
    • Coffee: black coffee is totally fine. Whole cream you can do but there’s going to be a slight decrease in some of the benefits of your fast
    • Bulletproof coffee: if you’re trying to lose weight and have done fasting for a period of time maybe just have the black coffee, but if you’re trying to maintain weight go for bulletproof coffee
    • Energy drinks/Gatorade: because they have sugar
    • Soda with artificial sweeteners: Even though they don’t have sugar, they have artificial chemicals that interrupt the microbiome in your gut that can indirectly cause problems with your insulin levels
    • Alcohol
    • Soy drinks: avoid them
    • Almond milk: if it’s just almond and water, maybe, but it still has calorie
    • Milk: avoid milk. Yogurt has more sugar than kefir, if you had a choice between yogurt and kefir, go for kefir
    • Beverages with bouillon cubes: if you can find ones without maltodextrin or monosodium glutamate then they’re good
10:23 What you can drink while fasting:
    • Water
    • Electrolytes
    • Apple cider vinegar
    • Adding lemon/lime
    • Supplements (make sure they’re not protein powder type)
    • Green tea
    • Black coffee (maybe with a little cream or half and half)
    • Don’t forget sea salt

    Thank you Dr. Berg

  4. I switched back to a Mediterranean diet with plenty of chickpeas hummus and legumes fruits and vegetables and I dropped 10 lbs in 3 weeks after I put 15 pounds of fluid back on from quitting keto . Cut back on meats and cheese and I feel incredible . Keto screwed me up . Mediterranean plus limited fasting works

  5. Since I’ve been fasting and intermittent fasting all the guys at work have developed an opinion about me. However one of them asked me the other day how much weight have you lost? Another one sad you look better like brighter. They can clearly tell that I have plenty of energy because I’m out working then. I’ve watched this channel for a couple of years now but never took anything serious because I was lazy and was just making excuses. A little bit of discipline and finally the desire to be a better version of myself has pushed me fully off the edge and I plan on doing this for the rest of my life. A couple weeks ago I was 265 pounds this morning I weighed in at 246.2. Thanks doctor for your free information that is changing my life.!!!

  6. I learned from you of course-those are the only things I allow myself during my IF & I’m so happy to see that they’re the only ones allowed. You are the best Dr. Berg and I can’t thank you enough, so I will… 😁🌟 THANK YOU!!

    • @EricbergDc247 I hope you get my msgs I’ve sent to this but I ordered the hair growth pills alone and wanted to make sure they’ll still work without the serum and shampoo. Couldn’t afford those yet.

  7. I actually do a prolonged fast and drink coffee with cream. However I’m into day 2 of ONLY water I already feel better! — I’m here to tell ya — water water water water 💦💙

  8. Lemons are incredible! They don’t make me feel like i ate a box of donuts as most fruits do while fasting Thanks Dr. Berg! 🙂

    Thank you Dr Berg!! 🐱👍🏿

  10. I broke an eight days and half fast few days ago. Interestingly, ten years ago, I had an other fast to the same duration. There is no doubt that my late fast was much easier.
Here are the reason Why :
Ten Years ago, I did it in South-East Asia, where the only drinkable water available in my place was filtered and boiled, and there cooled down in metal containers. After 8 days, I could not stand the taste of that water anymore, to the point that it made me interrupt my fast.
On the other hand, during my second fast I could drink both Tap Water and an excellent French mineral water.
Moreover, I could drink from time to time fresh brewed Decaffeinated coffee ( about one to two cups a day maximum ).
Finally, I could use some Liquid Magnesium formula without any additional sugar or proteins : That helped very much to keep me mineralised and energised. I guess that my usual practice of Intermittent Fasting during the last three years and half, helped me too.
The reason why I fasted longer then usual :
I must say that I started my recent Fast because of one main reason. Indeed, Following Covid that I caught in September, I observed that somme chronic inflammation that I still got before increased. I had experienced Brain Fog, and that condition worsened after the disease.
Today, after that Therapeutic Fast, I must say that my brain fog has reduced dramatically, that it is about ten times less debilitating.
Meanwhile, I still go on with a low carb, closed to Ketogenic diet, and with my daily intermittent fasting of about 19 to 22 hours a day.
I feel great, in High Spirit, with a clearer mind and vision, younger, full of energy.
    Best Regards.

  11. I tried whipped coffee in fasting but i was not satisfied and it keeps reminding me again and again that I have consumed calorie although it is not zero. So i am strict to black coffee in the morning and bullet proof coffee after breaking fast and results are amazing. that is my personal details 😀

  12. I’ve done 3 day fasts while drink coke zero and bang energy drinks. On the third day my ketone test strips were dark purple and I still lost weight. Sure its not the best thing to be drinking anyways but it will help you through those fasts when you get sick of the taste of water.

  13. I’ve been almost two years on keto, and about 18 months of intermittent fasting, black coffee and black tea haven’t affected me at all. Doctor Berg’s videos have truly been life changing. My go to drink is acv, lime and water, question, does inulin fibre break a fast?

  14. Answered a lot of questions, especially the use of whole cream (Heavy whipping cream) and half and half in black coffee. Thanks for the all the great information.

  15. A question for you Dr. Berg, I drink a tablespoon of Chia seeds, lemon juice, ACV, ginger and cinnamon and a drop or two of Stevia everyday, including when fasting, should I omit the chia seeds when fasting to get better results? Thank you always for your videos, I have lost 30 lbs and feel amazing since starting Keto and watching your videos/channel! I still have some to go and will not “throw in the towel”!!

  16. Been following your videos Dr. Berg. Been doing intermittent fasting for a year now. I start with black coffee with lemon juice and honey in the morning and eat nothing until midday. I start with a green smoothie at midday before lunch. I
also work out 3 times a week with dumbbells. I just noticed the other day, that I no longer have belly fat and cellulite. I used to think that if I don’t have breakfast I will be too hungry to work but instead I have more energy.
