Let’s talk about the vagus nerve and digestion. One important function of the vagus nerve is regulating the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. A problem with the vagus nerve can lead to a cascade of digestive problems and health issues.

Acetylcholine is the main neurotransmitter involved in the vagus nerve. Acetylcholine needs vitamin B1, but a deficiency of B1 is a common problem. If you’re deficient in vitamin B1, your vagus nerve can’t make the hydrochloric acid you need.

A lack of hydrochloric acid can potentially lead to an increased risk of various health concerns, including:
• GERD
• Acid reflux
• Heartburn
• Hoarseness
• Problems digesting protein
• Bloating
• Constipation
• Allergies
• A lack of mineral absorption
• Anemia
• H. pylori
• Gastritis
• Ulcers
• Stomach cancer
• SIBO
• A lack of bile
• Gas
• Diarrhea
• Inflammation
• Leaky gut
• Immune problems
• Autoimmune problems
• Cognitive problems
• Mood problems

Consider taking natural vitamin B1 immediately. You can get it from nutritional yeast or a natural supplement. To increase hydrochloric acid naturally, try taking betaine hydrochloride.

If you have gastritis or ulcers, you may want to take zinc carnosine, but if you have SIBO, garlic may be beneficial. For stomach inflammation, try a carnivore diet.

  1. You are one of the best doctors around imagine there were more like you. Maybe you should open a school. I mean you kind of already have here on yt 🤣

  2. For some reason my body didn’t like nutritional yeast. Is that odd? Eat at least 3/4 veggies a meal, with fresh garlic, zinc(90mg) and now B1, etc..

    • How interesting. My body loves it and I feel so much better taking it, but I find it very non appealing. I force myself to take it because I really dislike the taste.

    • Be careful with zinc and don’t exceed the RDA. It replaces copper, and can cause very serious nerve damage if you take too much.

    • @Linda Pelle Hi, I use the nutritional yeast flakes in my daily smoothie with berries, cannot taste them at all IMO, and make sure to get the non-fortified form. Cured my restless leg syndrome!

  3. This Doctor saved me. I was suffering from extreme constipation. 2 and a half months of hardly any bowel movements. The doctors couldn’t do anything. Not once did they recommend bile salts or specific supplements. I started using Dr. Berg’s supplements and apple cider vinegar. I also started eating non pasteurized sour kraut with small amounts of fiber to feed the probiotics. Thank you so much Dr.

  4. Many doctors prescribing drugs without checking the root cause for their own sake; that is how you save humankind, Dr.. Thank you

  5. Thanks so very much Dr. Berg- you’re so gifted at so many things, but if every patient could have the blessings of your gift of teaching – the world would be a better place 🙏 I wish your style and methods could be taught in medical school and every clinic and hospital all over the world so people would be empowered to heal themselves with this physical gnosis🙏🤗💚

  6. I’ve been on a anti inflammatory diet, with some keto, but mostly lots veggies and I stopped 100% alcohol, sugar and wheat, took a few months but feel way better, but best was the anti heartburn med I stopped taking. My bloating is gone, and the discomfort in lower abdomen. All problems come down to what we eat.

    • My wife and I both started ketogenic diet a few months …with various imput from people saying how unhealthy it was ….well my blood tests came back and I no longer need cholesterol medication my wife and I have both lost more weight than on any other diet and another bonus we don’t need any antacids anymore none and we used to buy massive amounts of tums! Thanks Dr Berg!!!

  7. Thank you so much Doc Happy New Year God Bless you and your family! I hope you help more people around the world and educate 🙏❤️

  8. Dr. Berg might not be a medical doctor but he is more of a doctor than a lot of “real” doctors out there because he actually cares about the origin of health issues rather than to just suppress the symptoms of those issues. Cure the cause and the symptoms will disappear by themselves. 🙂 Thank you.

  9. I’m 70 and had my gallbladder removed when I was 35. I have not noticed any digestive problems so far. Question should I be taking bile salt supplements because of my age and not producing enough hydrochloric acid?

    • “Root problems” often start long before symptoms (which are the effects of things going wrong/not functioning in ways that the body is having trouble adapting/making up for the shortage) … Doctor Berg has a great perspective and it is very very much worth looking into /exploring… as we age stomach acid is declining long before we notice the effects from it’s absence/ reduction…

  10. The connection between low stomach acid and GERD is such an unknown to the average sufferer. It took me a year of research to finally realize my silent reflux and GERD was caused by antacids. 🤦‍♂️

  11. I had a vagotomy in my 40’s where they actually cut the vagus nerve. It has caused digestive issues ever since. As I learn more about the importance of the vagus nerve I really regret allowing them to do it.

  12. I’m 99.9% sure my gut is the reason I get migraines.
I did a pH test on the test strips and my result is acidic.
Started taking my Lansaprazole capsules in mornings, and all seems calmer down below.
Whether it’s the vagus nerve screaming at me, “gut problems”, or what, but I am telling everyone, do not rule out gut issues the next time you have a massive migraine.
I do not eat fruit as to me they are acidic.
    Love chocolate!!

    • I had migraines and found out I was histamine intolerant..low histamine diet and my migraines went away..chocolate is very high histamine..research it and I hope it helps you..

  13. Hi doctor. Thank for all the information you put on your channel, ? There are so many brands of betaine hydrochloride out there, wish one would you recommend. Thanks

  14. I have IBS. I took hydrochlorix acid and had the worst heartburn. I do apple cider vinegar and it worked much better.

  15. Thank you for all you do to educate us!! I have to add, my husband makes your bread and it’s amazing with butter!

  16. Dear Dr. Berg, months ago, you recommend B1 as Benfotiamine, and Alpha Lipolic Acid for people who lost their sense of smell. This happened to my elderly father, 71y. He started taking both vitamins a month ago in pure powdered form 1 teaspoon per day each in his smoothie. He’s smell didn’t return completely (yet) but the temperature of both of his feet equalized. He had lower back surgery 15 y ago and since then, one of his feet was always cold on touch. And he would usually be sensitive to cold. Now, his feet are warm and his body warm too. He can smell only roses, jasmine, herbs, and Victoria secrets body lotions. So to cheer him up, I got him collection set of Victoria secrets body lotions for him. 🤗 Thank you.🥰 By the way, Dr. Berg, what else can dad take to speed up his list sense of smell please?

    • Loss of sense of smell is neurological, something in the brain. I read that the part of the brain that controls the sense of smell is right next to the part of the brain that is effected with Alzheimer’s.
The only thing that can be taken for the brain, that I know of, is the Standard Process brand Neurotrophin PMG. 1 at bedtime.
Dr. Berg does mention here, how much the mind / cognitive is affected by the digestion in the gut.
