Today, we’re going to talk about vitamin D deficiency and some things you’ve probably never heard about vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause:
• A compromised immune system
• Inflammation
• Sleep issues
• Digestive problems

Causes of vitamin D deficiency:
• Gut inflammation
• Missing gallbladder
• Thicker skin
• Darker skin
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• Insulin resistance
• Location (living further from the equator)
• Problems with certain genes
• Infection
• Fatty liver
• Smoking
• Sugar
• Stress
• Statins
• Low-fat diets
• Pollution
• Omega-6 fatty acids

It’s almost impossible to get vitamin D from your diet, so you need to take certain measures to avoid becoming vitamin D deficient.

Important things you may have never learned about vitamin D:
1. Most side effects that occur after taking vitamin D could be caused by a magnesium deficiency.

2. Infrequent large doses of vitamin D may be better than small daily doses.

3. Farm-raised fish have four times less vitamin D than wild-caught fish, and grain-fed animals have less vitamin D than grass-fed animals. Chickens and pigs that roam outside have more vitamin D than those confined indoors.

4. Vitamin D3 is the third biggest factor that improves overall health.

5. Vitamin D2 is very different from vitamin D3 and may inhibit the absorption of vitamin D3 and worsen MS. It’s also not effective to help with lupus or to decrease mortality, whereas vitamin D3 may be effective in these situations.

6. Ten minutes of skin exposure to the sun only provides about 400 IU of vitamin D.

7. Most vitamin D3 supplements in Europe (and possibly around the world) contain corn syrup.

  1. On the mark , precise , concise and cutting-edge as usual ! Thank you Dr Berg . I remain grateful to you for everything forever …..

  2. Thanks, Dr. Berg for an informative video.
What level of vitamin D in blood is optimal?
In 2021 I took vitamin D supplement 1,000IU-2,000IU everyday for a year that helped my Vitamin D level to go up to 50 (the high end of the recommended range). In 2022 I stopped taking Vitamin D supplement because I learned that too high a level of Vitamin D in the blood could potentially be dangerous and that 20-30 is the optimal range. My vitamin D level in the blood now in 2023 stays at 50 and wouldn’t come down for 1 year even after I stopped taking the supplement.
I don’t go out in the sun because I develop hyperpigmentation (sun blotches) on my skin (especially on the face). I apply sunscreen everyday and put on long-sleeved shirts and pants to prevent sun damages on my skin.
    Any advice please?

    • @Keto Diet You are wrong. Kenyan pastoralists living in the modern world had an average of 48 ng/mL. And even they have POPs exposure which lower vitamin D values in the serum. The NIH is an empire of group compliance think and not real science. PTH hormone levels respond suggesting to a level below 80 nmol/L (32 ng/mL) so as to maintain serum calcium levels and PTH are raised to respond. PTH has number of actions and is a fun topic.
Watch your serum calcium levels not so much your vitamin levels.
IMHO and as my memory recalls. Refer to primary papers not half wit secondary sources.

    • For what it is worth I have sustained blood test levels of 105 – 108 ng/ml (270 nmol/ml) for several years now. No obvious problems. Basically we are now on a 10,000 IU D3/ 180mcg K3 daily maintenance dose. My partner and I used to both struggle through every winter with repeated bronchitis, bad colds or flu’s. To the point where it was a real concern. Since we started working with Vit D3 about five years ago neither of us have had more than a few days of sore throat at worst. And both still free of the demon virus as far as we know.

  3. Vitamin D makes such a big difference to my well-being 😊notice a big difference over Covid lockdown until I started taking Vitamin d feel so much better . Appreciate Dr. Berg .

  4. So crazy I came across this I just did my blood work and my vitamin d was a 13 which my dr said was extremely low so he prescribed it ..I’m always always exhausted and have digestive issues like acid reflux

    • @SelesteWithAnS My Vitamin D level was 18 a few years ago which caused lower back pain. I used to take the 50,000 IU a week and my levels would stay in the 20s. When I started taking Vitamin D3 with K2 my levels stay above 60 sometimes hitting 80. I feel so much better nowadays. The brand I take is called Nutriflair and it’s plant based.

    • Yeah me too coincidence My Dr informed me todU that Vit D levels is below 30 I think 12 or 13
Dr’s prescription is ready for collection tomorrow

  5. Living in the Sunshine State definitely has its perks when it comes to getting that daily dose of Vitamin D! ☀ But even here, it still takes a conscious effort to ensure I’m spending at least 30 minutes outside every day. Dr. Berg’s informative and eye-opening videos like this one are truly a game changer! His dedication to our health and well-being is incredible. Thanks to him, I’m reminded to prioritize my health and soak up that sun, or at the very least, get my Vitamin D in pill form if necessary! 🌞💊

    • Probably one of the reasons why Okinawans live the longest. They’re always outside. It’s mainly sunny year round and warm. I lived there for a year.

    • @Michigan USA/Singapore S.E.Asia
My Dr told me I need (everyone needs) 10,000 IU a day of D. But the vitamin bottles say 2,000IU. And my Dr said the body stores the D and uses what and when it needs it. Calling it a “checkbook vitamin “. I never heard of anyone o’ding on D 😆

    • Thank you so much for your videos! I had a misfortune, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I also created a channel and am trying to move in that direction, but so far not very successful((xv

  6. My levels are up thanks to you and dr Ronda Patric! I feel empowered because of you all and my own new confidence about my own research!

  7. I have used vitamin D/K2 for many years, because I’m living in Norway. Why is it possible that groups of people and scientists now declare that vitamin D is not a vitamin (which I knew) and is dangerously disturbing the VDR, vit D receptors? Thank you Eric, as chronically ill, I appreciate your support with the videos very much ‼️🥳

    • I live in Norway too,I need more vitamin D because l am originally from Africa. When I was in Africa I gott vitamin D from the Sun!

  8. I didn’t know there were three types of vitamin D. Thank you for sharing this incredible video Dr. Berg. ❤

    • 🚨🚨🚨🚨 🚨 I almost lost my pancreas because of too much Vitamin D😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

    • It’s actually 5😊

Vitamin D is a group of fat- soluble prohormones made up of 5 different vitamins : vitamin D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5. The two most important forms in which vitamin D can be found are vitamin D2 ( ergocalciferol ) and vitamin D3 ( cholecalciferol ), both of which have very similar biological activity. Ergocalciferol (D 2 ) is of vegetable origin, while cholecalciferol (D 3 ), deriving from cholesterol , is synthesized in animal organisms .

  9. It is interesting that insurance companies don’t want to cover the vitamin D test anymore. My former Dr said they found that vitamin D isn’t that important. I beg to differ.

  10. Hi Dr Berg. I found out yesterday from my PCP that my Vitamin D and B12 levels are too high and she asked me to take a break from those two. I take your vitamins besides black seed oil, iron and sea moss. I was wondering, can you do a video dedicated to daily vitamins to take? For everyone not just people who are on Keto lifestyle? I think I might be taking more that I need.

    • @Sarah I saw a post about joint pain. I had it bad for years. Stopped wheat and grains, disappeared in a few weeks never to return. Just putting that out there. Maybe try elimination diet carnivore. Look it up. Could be something you’re eating and the body is autoimmune state

    • I recently started taking Beef Liver supplements. They say you don’t have to take a multivitamin if you take Beef Liver. Also gives amazing energy.

    • 50-70 ng/ml (or 125-175 nmol/l, this unit gives 2.5 higher values) is optimal. 70-100 ng/ml is seen as therapeutic.
If higher than that, you may want to go back to 70..
Always always combine with vitamin K2 and magnesium!🌟

  11. I got a skin rash that resembled psoriasis from vitamin D3 supplements. Took me 8 years to get rid of it. Got rid of it literally in 1 day by taking a high B complex supplement where all the B vitamins were in the 100mg range.

  12. from self trials, I noticed that when I started taking vitamin D supplement my insulin resistance went down to normal, my blood sugar post meals went down to almost normal even with carbs, it’s amazing!, I did not check for vitamin D deficiency but I live in the north where we can see the sun for only 3 months a year and cloudy the rest of the year!

    • what was your iu per day? or were you big dosing 1/2 times a week? and how long did that take? apologies for all the questions, think I’m in the same boat as you were.

    • @Ed Douglas I started 2 weeks ago vitamin D3 2000 IU 1 pill every other day, I’ve noticed the effects after 5 days, as I check my blood glucose post meals for the last 3 years when I got diagnosed by coincident without any side effects during a normal blood test, I don’t know if it’s relevant, but it happened only when I started!

  13. I have seen Vitamin D3 literally change many lives and lift depression. I live in seniors citizens building and I have told many of my neighbors to add Vitamin D3 to their life. It really helps with depression and inflammation.

  14. He should’ve mentioned the importance of taking the combo capsule of D3 + K2, instead of D3 alone.

    • 🚨🚨🚨🚨 🚨 I almost lost my pancreas because of too much Vitamin D😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

    • Wrong. It is best so they say to take them at different times of the day. I think the K2 in AM and D3 with fatty dinner meal. NOT at the same time.

  15. Thanks doctor Berg. I’m a nutrition and longevity scientist who’s been hard on you in the comments at times but I also think you do great work most of the time. Great video

    • I have one for you, as I posted above, No matter the combination, Vitamin D3 even with fish/cod oil or even K2, sends my blood pressure through the roof!! GNC reps tell me it is a known phenomenon and not everyone can take D3. My naturopath and osteopath tell me the same thing and diet, sun, and nature are better than a manufactured substance. In fact, I had a GNC area rep tell me many people stop taking D3 and their BP goes way down. My naturopath did say that D3 is way over blown and can trigger imbalances.

  16. Thank you Dr. Berg. I’ve been taking Vit D3 with K2 since C19. Lab work is perfect.
    Thank you for this confirmation.

  17. Dr. Berg, you are a blessing to the community around the world. I am from Bangladesh and i have been following you for over a year. You helped my community tremendously with all the information about our body and how it functions. Do you have any tips about Lipoma in the body? I have countless and am trying to find a remedy for it. I have tried homeopathic but it tends to not work. Any advice, your suggestions will be greatly appreciated. May Allah(SWT) bless you!

  18. I had normal vit d levels until I became ubber flouride toxic. It went down to 19 finally got up to 24 then the 36 started grass fed beef, but it has was done to 24. Will be interesting to see next labs next
