In this video, we’re going to talk about what to drink while fasting.

Water won’t kick you out of ketosis, but water quality varies greatly. Tap water is generally pretty toxic, and plastic water bottles contain microplastics. Glass water bottles are a better option, but they can be costly. Canned water often contains BPA.

Unless you have access to a well or spring water, a water filter is best. Crystal Quest water filters are cost-efficient and work well.

Some people find that they feel more hydrated after drinking carbonated water. Carbonated water contains carbon dioxide, which helps drive oxygen into your tissues. Carbonated water is also slightly more acidic, which may be helpful for digestion.

You can add apple cider vinegar to your water to increase energy, help with insulin resistance, improve mitochondrial function, and help improve a fatty liver.

While fasting, you can also add electrolyte powder or sea salt to your water. If you’re doing one meal a day, it's especially important you’re getting enough salt.

Stevia is fine on keto, but oftentimes, you’ll see maltodextrin added to stevia-sweetened beverages. Keto-friendly sweeteners that will not kick you out of ketosis include erythritol, monk fruit, and stevia.

You can drink coffee without sugar while fasting—just be careful not to overdo it with caffeine.
Try using heavy cream for your coffee rather than half-and-half. Bulletproof coffee involves adding coconut oil, MCT oil, or butter to your coffee. For some people, this can hinder weight loss.

Tea is also fine while fasting. Coffee and tea can sometimes deplete vitamin B1. If this happens to you, simply supplement vitamin B1 and decrease your consumption of coffee and tea.

Most people can not consume coconut water while fasting due to its sugar content. Alcohol kicks you out of ketosis and autophagy. Kombucha is okay in small amounts, but don’t consume too much because it is high in sugar.

Shakes or smoothies are fine on keto but can inhibit fasting because of the calories. Smoothies are better consumed closer to a meal, not while you’re fasting.

  1. Before replenishing my electrolytes after one heck of a workout and losing about 6 pounds of sweat right before my physical yesterday, my height was ½ an inch or so shorter! What was so interesting was that even after being followed by a PRETTY security guard woman, my B/P was 105 over 56, and my heart rate was only 56! 🎉 Thought it would be off the charts! 😊 I truly appreciate you, Dr. Berg for teaching us Healthy Keto! Have a wonderful day, everyone!

  2. This is wonderful to know, Dr Berg. I myself found out that drinking carbonated water was more refreshing and comforting before knowing this from you. Precisely diluted raw organic ACV, squeezed fresh lemon juice and a tiny bit of pink himalayan salt was the only thing that kept me going and helped me recover quickly from dysautonomia due to long covid since I barely could eat, which knocked off the bit stubborn belly fat I had, alongside taking other supplements recommended from your videos. Carbonated water is my everyday favourite drink now. Thank you so much for your daily educational content and helpful advice to improve our health 🙏🏻💕

  3. I have lemon water if I want to push my fast further and get gut issues. Charcoal and oregano oil as well to assist as I get gut infections constantly. Can’t tolerate ACV. This works for me.

That co2 water theory sounds awesome 🙂

    • @@prop5339 That’s a bit of a struggle yes, but most of the time when you fast for an extended period of time, you don’t need as much sleep. You should feel pretty energized with some practice. My rest heart rate is by itself pretty low due to a lot of running, so maybe that helps me to control it better when i do fast. That also made me fat adapted, so my body knows it can use those stores efficiently.

But when i fast i make sure i do as little as possible, you want to avoid any type exercise. Try to get in an relaxed state, and let it happen. And if you can’t, that’s okay too.

  4. Amazing information, Dr Berg! I also enjoy drinking my carbonated water on a daily basis, with diluted raw organic ACV and squeezed lemon juice first thing in the morning, it’s so refreshing. Thank you so much for all your time dedicated to provide relevant content. Cheers from the UK💕 🌞

    • Not only are you absolutely right about Dr. Berg, but your morning cocktail (water, organic ACV, and fresh lemon juice) is also something to keep doing forever!! I’ve been making the same thing for a long time, and I love the effects, so I can confirm it is a very healthy drink!! The only difference for me is I add a couple shakes of organic cayenne pepper for an added thermogenic effect. If you don’t like spicy things, then you don’t have to add it as what you are already doing is plenty fine!! Cheers from the US!! 😊

    • @@skylerhorner8796 aye same here, that’s what I drink everyday since I’ve known about ACV, and love spices too! Thanks 👍🏻🍋

  5. Start with Dr Berg has been a huge support and is the reason I started getting my health back.

Only one thought and/or constructive criticism piece for this. Going back and forth from different diets has made me realize that it is very hard to retain salt/sodium when not eating carbohydrates. When doing keto I could never get enough water and salt. But when eating a small amount of sugars, staying hydrated was no deal.

Hope this helps, peace out and have a great day.

  6. Good morning Dr Berg, I drink sparkling water all day long but in a morning I drink sparkling water with Ginger, Turmeric, Lemon, Lime, ACV and Himalayan Sea Salt. Thank you Sir.

  7. The most I’ve done was 3 day water fast and I did green tea and white tea and carbonated and non carbonated water with sea salt or electrolyte powder but I normally make my own electrolyte drink. Sparkling water does Help you feel fuller longer💯

  8. I use a Zero water filter, we got yet another notice from our water company that now it is excess manganese that we should be concerned about pouring from our tap along with all of the other chemical delights. I started following you last year, became determined to finally do something about my weight problem. It took awhile, but I’m nearly at my new goal weight. I’m 65 years old and in less than a year I’ve lost 60 pounds and now weigh less than I did when I was in the USMC in 1978. Thanks for your guidance and common sense advice, I look and feel great.

  9. I drink 3 large cups of coffee each morning while I’m fasting… although some people would argue that I’m not really fasting. However, I managed to lose 103 pounds of body weight drinking 1 cup of tea and 3 cups of coffee with heavy cream each morning. I think that people should work out what works for them and tinker with it.

    • People do not ” _argue_ ” that you are, ” _not really fasting_ “. They simply make that observation of truth. There is no argument to be made. I am really glad your extreme liquid KETO diet helped you lose weight and get healthier. Sincerely.
But *calling* it ” _fasting_ “, does not make it so. It never will. Words have meanings for a reason.

    • Make sure you ingest atleast a teaspoon of good sea salt if your gonna fast and have that much coffee becareful

  10. Thank you, Dr. Berg. I’ve had a habit of going on a weekly partial fast for years. Your acceptable liquids suggestions & ideas about water filtering are much appreciated.

    Be Well.

  11. I started fasting 3 years ago for spiritual reasons after the first year I started realizing fasting helps us physically too, I’m sure now that’s one of the Lord’s reasons for fasting 🙏🏼🙌🏼👑✝️🙌🏼🙏🏼

    • Isaiah 58
…” and thine health shall spring forth speedily.”

The first few verses are the “false fast”
      .. Pharisees.

Then the “This is The Fast that I have chosen” says the Lord.
      Awesome
      Totally Awesome!
Fasting opens THE healing system; CREATED IN our bodies.

    • Jesus fasted for our sins, He was God, perfect, illness came after the sin because we were not in God’s Devine will or doing his will.

    • So yes, fasting, if you’re a Christian, should fundamentally be to grow spiritually in various ways. Also however, the physical benefits are so significant, that of course God created fasting also for these reasons. Our bodies are the Spirit’s temple, therefore a regular fasting routine would absolutely help keep your temple in outstanding condition.

  12. I drink 2-3 cups of black coffee in the morning. When I was starting with intermittent fasting, I found it helpful to add cream to my final cup of coffee if I was really to try to push my first meal back. Now it’s not a problem. Other than that, I almost always drink water that I carbonate at home.

  13. I use the water cooler that holds 5 gallon bottles. They go in the bottom of the cooler, not on top. I drink 2 water glasses of warm water upon awakening, with lemon, and plain warm water throughout the day, and later in the day a cup of black tea. Thank you for this information Dr. Berg. God Bless.

  14. Excellent video! I love your electrolyte powder! So many of them have so much sodium. I’m a senior woman who walks for exercise but I’m also hypertensive, so I appreciate getting nutrients without a load of sodium.

  15. Thanks for sharing Dr. Berg! Your content is super helpful. I use PRIMO water jugs in my dispenser as well as carbonated water.

  16. I’m in the process of a prolonged fast, so far up to 6 days & 4 hours. My goal is 10 – 14 days, but we’ll see how far I can get, as the longest I’ve ever gone before is 7.5 days, which I’ve done on two separate occasions. On both of those occasions, one in particular (the most recent one), my body was really telling me to stop. But maybe that was part mental, as my goal was 7 days, and now that my goal is longer, I’m hoping I’ll not have that feeling come tomorrow. Water only, but taking a pinch of Himalayan Pink Salt each day, and electrolyte powder every other day. Also taking a few supplements daily: Nattokinase, Magnesium Glycinate, and Milk Thistle (although, just twice so far, it has Maltodextrin in it so I’m skeptical about taking it but need it for my liver). Over the remainder of the fast, however long it lasts, I’m considering adding the following: Ginger Tea, Benfotiamine, and Burdock Root.

I know I need the supplements I’m taking and the ones I’m considering taking, but Thomas DeLauer said something interesting in one of his fasting videos, that the whole purpose of a fast is to stress the body into generating what it needs to survive and repair itself, and if you consume things that assist with that process, you’re reducing the amount of stress on the body and that’s counter-productive. He particularly mentioned to not take Vitamin C, or other antioxidents, that will offer a crutch to the body in the stressful state fasting is meant to put it in.

I feel good overall, am sleeping well, and am slowly but steadily experiencing improvements in a few areas of ill health that prompted this fast. Hopefully that will continue for the next few days or week, as that will be uncharted waters for me in the sea of fasting.

  17. Started keto/carnivore Dec 15th and I’m down 20 lbs so far… I’m never without my water bottle and Dr.berg electrolytes. I like the Raspberry Lemonade the best. I didn’t have the keto flu and I attribute that to the electrolyte replacement. Im looking forward to spring and summer for the first time in years. Thank you Dr. Berg ❤😊
